FUNKe Study : Castlevania Lords of Shadow

  • Curious what a 3D metroidvania would look like? I still am! Anyway, here's Devil May Cry 3.
    Twitter: / funkepills
    Discord: / discord
    Twitch: / funke
    a few words for description checkers:
    This is a much more 'conventionally structured' review than I normally do, I just wanted to give this video a different approach from my usual concise style (the whole point of funke studies and f2nke is to let me stretch my legs/experiment with scripted videos). Hopefully it doesn't come off as too unfocused because of that. I understand some people think these should just go on the main channel, and to some degree I concur but as of right now i'm most comfortable rolling these out here while I figure out how I want to structure them and whether I want to move the series later.
    Usually I end up making reviews for stuff after I stream them, but this was just a game I played on my own time offline. Streaming random niche stuff like this isn't as much fun for me, since I get anxious about chat inactivity; so generally don't assume there's an archive on the vods channel unless it's the sort of game i'd play live. If people would like me to stream more niche stuff, let me know. bit.ly/funkevods
    The lack of music in this video was by choice; copyright laws aside I felt backing the script (especially a longer one like this) with music would be a little cliche review-wise so hopefully I articulated things well enough you didn't need auditory keys to be jingled to maintain attention. Also I kinda just wanted to be done so I can go play doom eternal. thanks

So like, Lovecraftian and Gothic. Two genres that blend really well.

    So many people say Castlevania should take after Bloodborne but I think that's only because of the theme Bloodborne has is similar.
    For gameplay, Castlevania should look to Sekiro. Single weapon, so we can focus just on the whip and it's complexity. Sub weapons, literally have been in Castlevania from the start and Sekiro dies them perfectly in 3D. Mobility, I WILL SWING WITH MY WHIP AGAIN ONE DAY GOD DAMN IT.
    What it should do better than either Sekiro or Bloodborne: higher variety of mook enemies, both in design and fighting tactics, as well as making them more deadly. Castlevania is notorious for its huge bestiary, and I want every game to try and live up to that. Platforming, Sekiro is close, but it's mobility is better for combat and getting around, not for jumping challenges, just imo.

    • @bomblessdodongo3093
      @bomblessdodongo3093 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That depends on the main character honestly, if it’s a Belmont then Sekiro’s singular weapon stuff works great. However if it’s literally anyone else would play around switching weapons constantly

      @ArtumTsumia 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering the upgrade mechanics, I wouldn't really consider _Bloodborne_ to have more than whatever weapon you start with. The rest of the weapons you find are spread out a fair amount, and the materials to upgrade them tends to make them not worth changing until you get towards the end of the game or on to NG+. Granted _Sekiro_ doesn't even offer an illusion of weapon choice, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that _Castlevania_ only ever sticks to a single weapon, there certainly are some titles which limit things to the whip, but later titles introduced a variety of weapons types, along with upgrades/replacements for most of them and some with fairly unique passive effects. Not at all dissimilar to _Dark Souls_ whereas _Bloodborne_ only had a single weapon of any type which had to be physically upgraded.
      Overall, _Lords of Shadow_ was a perfectly fine _Castlevania_ themed _God of War_ title that could have been much better if designed to lean into more of an open world, as widely known with the "Metroidvania" genre. There were a few minor points of the game that played into this, but the level select process made if feel far less organic to use a newly found ability in a previous area in order to reach a previously unreachable item.

    • @RolandTheJabberwocky
      @RolandTheJabberwocky 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArtumTsumia it's very easy to start using a new weapon in bloodborne, especially since blood gems matter more than upgrades and those can be swapped at will. And if they're bringing back Castlevania they should focus on making an amazing map and monsters and not weapons or extraneous gameplay elements, which is why Sekiro is a better game to learn on.

    Hey Funke!
    As a long time Castlevania fan I can assure you, this game has absolutely NOTHING to do with Castlevania.

      If you want to experience the only TRUE 3Dvania, you're gonna have to dig out the N64 games. Technically limited as they were, they are the only games to date that got the classic Cv formula right in 3D.

    the Titan Graveyard is like that for a reason, and if you had read the logs barely to no man has had reached that far and they knew that it would need sacrifice to go further.
    that place is pure despair and loneliness to show even better what the character will feel and or is already feeling after reaching the end of that level, from there through out it will only be a journey of pure revenge and loneliness instead of one where there is an happy ending.
    the ENTIRETY of the end game art and world/level building is based on Zdislav Beksinski art, just 1 glimpse on his art and you get why of that, you are a lonely person walking on the valley of death itself there's no one else in sight and whatever you find has long been corrupted or had been reanimated without their consent nor will, and what do you hear when you get close to them? yes screams of pain.(see the final "zombie" enemy in the game, in the codex itself it says that they were forcefully smashed together by necromancers and not in a right way, some even has 2 heads or 5 arms, they do barely to no damage to you and their atk animation is pitiful it shows that they are suffering and weak).
    i agree with many points of this video, and this video was the reason why i even cared on trying to play the first game for the first time ever on my pc, i endured the shitty hitboxes, the shitty balancing on hard. and the horrible animations windups.
    and the sheer despair of the final "world" or location you travel through shows how much your char has suffered and now he wants nothing but death to finally end his journey.
    yes the game is a GoW clone but a great one on that, i haven't seen as much variety of locations from a 360 gen title that wasn't an exclusive since ever. and even on the file size of the game it shows that (15gb on ultimate edition on pc, meanwhile the second game weights literal 7) it has a *LOT* of props and different locations for another GoW clone the devs put their soul on the game and the concept art inclusion shows such a thing for both games, they are an real talented and unique studio which got an opportunity and grabbed it as hard as they could but the poor hitboxes and horrible wind up animations shows that they needed to cut corners to get a game of this sheer scope and world size to be even published in the time which was set in stone.
    about the part showing his idle animation and framing on 13:03 that sort of thing gets repeated through out the whole game if you haven't even noticed it, there's a reason as to why the game also uses fixed cameras, the scenery isnt big af because *wow big stuff cool* no gabriel is an savage in disguise and the world complements that. just look at his executions, does those animations convey an "sane" man? (no seriously dude the way he killed the werewolf lord and the vampire lord is pretty overkill) and yourself pointed that out that kojima fucked up the character and i couldn't agree more with that he shited on the game, it could've had got the same character as Dantes inferno had some dude trying to save his waifu while keeping his head sane at the same time while going through hell itself and *metaphorically*.
    and talking about the "recaps" from 2:10 they are there to flesh out more the character because lets be real, its faster and less money consuming to just do text with a dude voicing over it for under a minute instead of animating it all, and the last chapters passages saying that he had barely slept and ate,while his anger just grows bigger and bigger before going up the valley of death shows that his journey was too long, he didn't expected that, he didn't wanted that, but now he has no choice but to continue because there's no turning back anymore.
    and just like on dantes inferno, the discovery of his wife committing suicide because of her dad abusing her (and again world design goes a LONG FUCKING WAY to set the tone of what the character is and will feel and that scene on the game is a prime example of that) and gabriel discovering that his rage made he get controlled by the darkness and his wife LYING to his face because she KNEW the moment she said the truth he would go down to his knees knowing everything was lost and that he wouldn't have the willpower to complete his journey anymore after realizing the monster that he had become.

    It'd be an interesting risk vs reward situation if your attacks landed way faster when you're right up in the enemy's face (but you can get hit easily) and your attacks have a longer start up animation from the whip's maximum length so you have to plan around that delay more (but you're less likely to get hit).

    No mention of the post-credit Gabriel-becomes-Dracula scene? Or was that DLC and i'm misremembering?
    I really liked this game. Thought it was well-paced enough to keep me going, didn't overstay it's welcome and playing around with combat and mobility was pretty cool. It's also extremely beautiful and while not much like the other Castlevania games, i feel it has earned it's place.

    this games holds a special place in my heart! played it when I was a kid and looking back at it now especially in this video made me think about how so many of the things I love about games were first found in this game. sooooo much nostalgia came form this video, thanks:) also just realised I was 10 when I play it...is that a bad thing?

    I was given this game along with many others by a friend and had never touched it. I am trying to see if I want to keep playing it or not because I didn't necessarily get too enticed by the beginning portion of it. I also have never played a Castlevania game before, and out of all the games my friend gave me he said this was one of his favorites

    I agree with the going the blood-borne route as far as 3D Castlevania go provided there's a difficulty setting. Heads up on the last of the Lords of Shadow trilogy. Lords of Shadow 2 has a whole lot of rough spots but you need to make it through and play the DLC. I stand by this the DLC needs to be made into its own game. I enjoyed your review.
