- Oh, it’s big alright. Big on sound, big on blues, big on energy. That there are just the three of ‘em making a racket onstage is all the more impressive. It’s nothing short of a hoot and a holler to have the good Reverend back on our stage, along with his wife, Breezy, on washboard and Max Senteney on a stripped-down drum kit that includes a five-gallon maple syrup bucket. This is a power trio that delivers incredible musicianship featuring the Reverend’s fantastic country blues finger-picking style.
Poor Until Payday is the Big Damn Band’s latest record and the sound they were after was that of the great 45s we listened to on Stax, Chess and Sun Records. Recorded in the same room with just a few vintage mics, it sounds as authentic as any scratchy record dropped on the platter. You guitar geeks out there will dig this bit of rig rundown: The Rev plays a custom-made National steel resonator, a 1949 Harmony Archtop, a 1954 Supro Dual Tone and a 1955 Kay Speed Demon through a 1949 Supro amp, all with the intention of capturing the “warmth, pops and hisses” that modern recording techniques eliminate. Your ears will say, “Oh yeah!”
And here’s something else from the band: Every time you tell someone about The Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band, an angel gets its beard. Sharing is caring.
Get ready for some spirited slide guitar in this lively version of “That Train Song” live from the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival Main Stage.
