  • What’s up Audio Nerds?!?
    Today we have a requested video... the new Blue Ember VS the Popular Audio Technica AT2020. Both of these mics run for the same price: $100. They are both cardioid condenser XLR microphones. They have similarities when it comes to specs and price but heck out the audio and see which one is right for you!!!

    Great video as always! Could I request that you compare the Neewer NW-81 uni-directional (or something like that) microphone to a high-end shotgun mic such as the Rode NTG3 because I want a cheap mic. Also could you recommend a good USB or shotgun mic less than $100 which also doesn't pickup much backvround hiss? I would prefer something that sounds like the AT2020USB+ because it has nice bass and cancels out the background noise. Thanks.. keep up the great work!!

I started with the AT 2020 as my first xlr mic, then moved to the Sterling Audio 55 and now am on the Rode NT-1, which I'd say is my best purchase, thus far. Keep up the good work!

    I think I’m gonna go for the ember. It just seems like a really great option. I think that if audio technica made an AT2020 in 2019, it could easily surpass the ember. But it’s basically already come out in the form of the at2035, even though it didn’t come out in recent years.

      for podcast a dynamic mic would be better than a condenser microphone

    • @agambhasin
      @agambhasin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They r two different kinds of microphones, on a dynamic microphone you would need to put the gain high up which would sound more noisy, on a condenser the preamps would need to be driven less harder due to PP, so your best bet would be to look up the self noise of them both

I am still happy with my AT 2020

    • @mikeexits
      @mikeexits 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm considering the same since the AT2020 can be had for $70, while I can't find an Ember for less than $100. You could always EQ your recordings to make them sound warmer like the Ember anyway.

    The problem I’ve found with Blue microphones is the quality drastically changes over time. In the exact same environment with the same settings recording into the same computer with the same settings and it’s fine during the first year or so but then the sound gets wonky and it gets worse over time. Volume fluctuates, a weird echo creeps in, it randomly sounds muted.

    • @AudioHotline
      @AudioHotline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is very interesting. I have never had that issue with a Blue mic, but I kind of always stayed a way from Blue mics until recent years. No reason why, they were just never very appealing to me for some reason. Now that I have a few of their mics that is definitely something I'll look out for! Thanks for your comment!

    From all the reviews I have seen this isn't really a video streaming mic but an audio streaming and more of an all around mic. Better for quieter environments and singing in a studio environment or for recording instruments. You need a pop filter which WILL obscure your face to some extent. But you can readily adapt this mic with some compromise in post such that you CAN use it for a video podcast with good sound.
    There is no one size fits all. You need to think of having multiple microphones as an ensemble. This one leans towards a real studio. The real question is does this microphone complement your other preferred microphones for results and uses. As far as the AT2020 it's overall better.

      The Back Row Fantasy Show hahaha that’s funny man! Yeah I hate how much people can get stuck on specs! I understand that specs should absolutely be considered, but I think it should be a basic guide and then let your ears take over with the more important stuff. Glad we are on the same page!

      Dang! It is on sale on guitar center for $79 also right now, dropped down from $99. Makes sense, blue comes out with the ember and more affordable small Yeti for $99, Rode is about to drop the podmic for $99, they want people to still be interested in the at2020. Good move on their part. Also! I wonder if they are getting ready to drop a new addition to their lineup! I hope so.

    So I bought an at2020 with a behringer audio box and everything was plugged in. I was testing everything and noticed my sound lowered every time a voice was heard on anything, songs, videos, discord, voice recorder, just everything. So I went to my audio settings and selected the “do nothing” option which for some reason was on and it didn’t help. I unplugged everything plugged it back in and it still didn’t work. I went to discord and attenuation was at 0%. Note that with my blue yeti none of this was happening. I thought everything was bugged so I did a fresh install of windows and it didn’t help. Can anyone help me on what to do? Because it’s a really nice microphone and I’d love to not have to return it.

    What is that holster hes using on the AT2020?

    • @AudioHotline
      @AudioHotline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is the shockmount that comes with the AT2035. It is called the Audio-Technica AT8458. It is pretty expensive to buy by itself. There are universal shockmount that are less than half the price that will work well. Like this one: amzn.to/2NaQsBR

    I feel like the AT2020 probably represents what your voice sounds like in real life more so than the Blue Ember (After watching several videos of yours.). But then again i dislike most microphones that add bass to peoples voices. All the dudes with higher end microphones all sound a like. It gets really goofy when you listen to the ladies reviewing microphones haha. But I think ill purchase both for my lady friend that is starting to get serious with you tube, and streaming and see which one sounds more like her in real life.

      What were the results? I'm thinking of going with the 2020 simply based on the fact that they do have very similar quality, I could EQ it to make it sound more like the Ember if I wanted to, and I can get it for $30 cheaper than the Ember.

    You almost lost me with the sarcastic singing lol.
    Overall, I hear what you’re saying about the thinness. It’s pretty audible. But if I can just say that if you’re reviewing the AT2020 for the first time, it’d probably be a better idea to do it as a stand alone as opposed to doing a comparison with an already reviewed mic. It adds a bit of bias to the review unintentionally. Just my opinion is all. Please don’t chew my ass off for having one please.

    • @AudioHotline

      No hate on my end. I actually get a kick out of your videos. Been working on a podcast myself and info from your channel and others have helped me consider a shit ton of options in reference to gear and all. Drop the stand alone video. I think it’ll be worth it.

    • @AudioHotline
      @AudioHotline  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Serafin Santiago Jr nice! I hope everything goes well with your podcast, let me know when you release something! I’d love to check it out. I do think a part of me was hoping that this video would go over as well as my last Blue VS Audio Technica video (Yeti VS AT2020usb+), but only time will tell. I try not to get impatient or rude with people, I know that people’s tastes and expectations are completely different, some people like certain humor, other don’t, etc.. the only time I get irritated is when people are blatantly ignorant or just trolls haha. I have been trying to get better about ignoring it, but I am kind of a shit talker though, so it’s been a challenge 😂 but no worries man, I don’t take offense to the constructive criticism, it can just be hard when certain people want comparisons and others want stand alone vids and everything. Every video or podcast you take a chance, and I still get nervous every time I click that “publish” button.
