I feel like a lot of commenters have never driven in the dunes. I have managed to get stuck with my long travel 4x4 Tacoma while running paddle tires. The sand is no joke.
Im from Florida. So not many dunes to speak of.. But our ground is sugar sand. Either sand or mud.. Most people don't understand that a tall tire is helpful. But it's actually the footprint you really wanna widen. You wanna prevent as much "pushing aside" with sand as possible. And wanna float across the top. The more area you've got spreading the load, the better. An of course less weight.
In His Keep we had fun bush wackin ...and my Gramps would hit all the cow patties on purpose as us kids hung onto his dune buggy and at night we'd play tag and try to play follow the leader and slam into bushes to take the lead. Completely unsafe . But Mom & Grames was pissed so fun
I really enjoy your videos, seeing how you do the jobs and marvelling at the scenery (I am from East Anglia in the UK). I have often seen the comments stating that there are technologies that would make your job easier so I really appreciate your explanations for the choices that you have made for your trailer. Watching you struggle to line up these vehicles with wheels at all angles or not there at all reminds me of when I did a little bit of recovery work and a really handy tool is a small pulley that can be hung over the winch cable and clipped to the side of the trailer in order to pull to one side or the other. It only weighs 2 or 3lb. I realise that the lightweight construction of your trailer may not be substantial enough to hold one though so please ignore this suggestion; I am in no position to try to teach you anything at all. Best wishes to all of you.
Hey Mat, first off we love your video's and the work you do.... regarding the comments, I am Dutch and I live in Belgium and we have a saying here "de beste stuurlui staan aan wal" translated this means the best helmsman are always on the shore.... dont take notice of the social media exerts, who have probably never drove an inch in loos sand conditions. I am a proffesional truck driver, an an off-road addict and in my book you and your team are doing a hell of a job recovering and building your own material to work with....
Everybody is an armchair quarterback aren't they. You do what is best for you and I give much praise to your camera crew great job of documenting the recoveries. This is my new favorite channel.
I’ve thought several times how a different trailer configuration could make your life easier BUT completely understand the need to keep it as light as possible and no fenders to tear off. I suspect after doing this for 20+ years you probably know best. I’m still in my mind though designing a “comparatively” lightweight tilt bed lol. I can’t believe how addicted I’ve become to watching these videos
Love your channel...I have my nephews watching it with me now. Lol. Sad to see the Talon wrecked....I worked on the design development(2012-2017) on the Honda Talon. Fun Fact: If anyone notice the asymmetric passenger seat, that was made to void a Polaris patent of having the drive shaft between the seats. Solution was the "Tumor Seat."
Matt, I really like the videos when you discuss your work and the job. Since I don't do the type of work you do, my understanding is much better on these types of videos. Thanks!
Heck, I'm impressed with your trailer because I know what to takes to make recoveries, not in that type of sand, but in Florida sand, and I know that a 2000+lb.trailer with a full ramp gate, is hard to get through some of the Florida sands and that's when it's empty, then once you put another 1200-1500+lbs on it, then you're having to pull well over 3000lbs. So I kinda know what it would take to get it to places you take that one, and one truck or Jeep isn't going to do it. Anyways, you know what works, and you built that to do what you needed it to do, and it works. And it working is all that matters.
That pissed off rant was brilliant! It's been explained in less detail in the past, obviously the "you should've" brigade don't think. When you watch it on severe dips and ridges it's built for the job (except for drunk drivers! )
Hello. Nice footage on tricky rescues. Your reasoning behind the trailer is spot on. The ONLY addition that I can think of to make it better than it already is, is to add electric or hydraulic engines to the front axle of it. That can help quite a bit when you are crawling in difficult - and soft terrain. At speeds over 10 mph they are worth less though. Somewhat engine dependant though. It will naturally come at a little weight cost, but I do think the extra climb and pull capacity will make it worth the slightly heavier rig. When I was a young man we installed 2 25 hp hydraulic engines to each front wheel of a 2 axle slurry wagon (20 Ton capacicy.) It made a tremendeus difference in getting through soft or muddy spots. If they were activated juuust before you got stuck in a mudhole it was often possible to pull through without coming to a halt, or if we did come to a halt it was often possible to "rock" it out because the front axle helped smooth the way so to speak. Just an idea for ya :-)
Having built, modified and towed many kinds of trailers, I can honestly say that this one is absolutely perfect for it's use. It is AWESOME. It is light and strong and can carry or recover most normal types of off-road vehicles. It gets an AAA++++ in my book. When you added the pintle hook & safety chains on the front, a new winch /control and cable, I added two more A's and two more more plusses. The aluminum ramps make excellent prybars loading demolished Razers with no steering.
I drove a Toyota Landcruiser jeep for 5 years in the Sahara desert. Toyotas were the only thing you could get parts for. Had a smallish 4 cylinder diesel in it. Somewhat underpowered, but we had the same kind of sand. Your only weapon to get over a dune was speed and if you had to slow down for something, you weren't going to make it. No trees, so eventually I removed the giant winch that had been put on it to lighten it and we just used sand plaques and a shovel. Mine were old military steel runway planks. Enjoy watching how y'all work through the various obstacles, problems and situations that come along. Keep it up and get er done!!
For the people that complain about his trailer. Do me a favor build your own trailer take it out there. when you get stuck call WINDER TOWING and they will come get you out.
Don't know why I love watching your videos but I keep coming back n watching lots of them along with Fab Rats videos. You all just make them very interesting and do things I wish were around when I was younger. Keep em coming!! God Bless

I think you're being a little hard on yourself Matt - when you have mangled suspensions/subframes it'd be near impossible to drag up straight on a trailer anyway...
Matt: I pull a dump trailer with a battery to operate the hydraulic ram Got tired of having to hand unload when the battery died. My solution was to install welding cable from the truck battery to the rear bumper with twist lock connectors . Now I just disconnect the trailer plug , connect the hot cable insure ground and you have power all the time without that elusive jump box coming into the equation or Ed forgetting to load it up. Really enjoy your channel. Bob from Ocala Florida
I'm a design engineer and I must say, for the job, that is almost a perfect trailer. Not an inch too long or too wide. The ramps are long enough to load things easily, but short enough so they can be repositioned after the first set of wheels are on the deck. The inverted axles and tandem wheels are excellent. The only thing I can see that could be improved is to mount the winch higher, so it continues to draw the load onto the trailer without sucking it down. But that takes more metal, and puts a larger bending moment on the trailer, which then requires more metal. So I fully understand the tradeoffs. Nicely designed. Nicely executed.
"You should have a full ramped, hydraulic tilt-bed" ...said no one who ever had to recover any kind of vehicle from the sand...Concur with Adam...."Don't read the comments"..
I love your justification of the trailer. I've driven the Simpson Desert in Australia and certainly wouldn't like to be touring anything out there...the Simpson looks very much like Sand Hollow but bigger...as in 4 days to cross it with no assistance available. I'm totally impressed at the way you fling that trailer around Matt. In Australian vernacular..."it's a bloody beaut"
I don't really know why it is so satisfying to watch your videos and how you do your job or hobby, keep doing what you do and also what ever works for you may not work for everyone else your trailer is awesome and thanks for your time
People who think they're smart and an "expert" on everything are really just ignorant. The first time I saw that trailer I knew it was purpose built. It's got a really high bed for clearance and articulation in rough terrain and obviously light as hell so it minimizes bogging you down. You adapt your equipment for the conditions you work in. He's not hauling a hot rod to the body shop here...
Don't worry about what other people say or comment. your good guy doing a good job helping people out, and you do it the way that's best for you. whether it's good for somebody else or not does not matter, it works for you and that's all that matters. Keep up the awesome work you do.
I love that you don't use all sorts of fancy tools. You've balanced the strength/weight ratio of all of your tools, but ultimately you're doing everything with a winch, a trailer, a couple straps, and your own ingenuity. most people could probably learn to do this themselves on the cheap if they devoted enough time to it.
So... that went end over end? Both ends are smashed in. I guess it hit hard on the front first, hard enough to smash the wheels right off. I guess it came right off the top of the dune airborne?
cageordie I wonder if Matt is checking for blood and fingers when he’s looking inside these unattended wrecks. Gotta wonder how it got wrecked! Side by sides basically look ready to fall apart anyways lol!
It would be interesting if Matt could reconstruct some of these crashes - but that might be a little too impolite for him. And I imagine a lot of it would just be guessing like we are! I'm thinking those things can be going fast, are light, and who knows how far it rolled from? (Okay, just looked at some crash videos - scary!).
Good morning America. How are ya? don't you know me? I'm your native son. Nice to see Max and Lady out but do miss Ed in this one. Oh Mr Matt, you've done it again.
Matt, I don't think you need to explain to anyone why you build the stuff you build. It works brother. Period... Love the show. Awesome jeep you built.
Matt, I dig your videos and love the way you have to tell your self to say things in a non-sarcastic way. I think we'd get along great because I have to do the same thing. I lived in St George for a little bit and understand how people have zero comprehension of what you're going through. They think they do because they drove on the beach one time in Florida. That dune sand is so fine it's barely sand anymore. Try driving over a pile of flour the size of your house and you'll see why light is the way to go. Keep pulling 'em out an filming it!
Personally I think Matt and crews do a brilliant job in all terrains. No matter how good one is at something like this whether on mud sand or snow, there's always going to be the "I could have done it better know all " brigade.
Never sweat snarky comments about how you get in or out of a situation. Those who don't drive off-road, never figure on getting stuck (or how to get out) and we hope they never do, so you can keep filming.
I never understood why some people seem to enjoy criticizing these videos, I think they need to set back and enjoy the show. I find it very interesting to see how people do things, everyone has a different method and who am I to say that any one is wrong? Besides I really enjoy the humor that you guys display even when things are tough 😎 I love the videos, keep up the good work 😎

helpful tip: A Hi Lift jack is a handy ghetto come-along. You can use it to move very heavy loads sideways, support fallen trees, lift a wall you're framing all by yourself, straighten out a bent radiator support, etc.
A "coffee through the nose moment on this comment!" Randy does a great job! It must be unbelievable hot at times... dirty, dusty etc... When exactly was the second vehicle added to Matt's crew? I noticed some great camera work a few weeks ago, a some shadows of a Jeep and I commented. Matt responded that it is his camera crew's vehicle. Matt continues to grow his channel like a reasonable, creative person!
I love your trailer, and see the design and function of it, people tend to forget that there's ALWAYS a reason people do the things they do, rather then ask "Why do you do it that way", they tend to say "Here's how you should do it", losing the chance to LEARN from others. However, if we are going to play "Let's Tell Matt How to do HIS Job", then I'm going to have to say you're doing this ALL wrong, Sorry Matt, here's what you REALLY should do, you need to spend a BUNCH of money and learn to fly a helicopter, then BUY a HUGE helicopter that has the capability to lift an F350 with a 40 foot trailer attached to it. Then you just fly in, pick up the vehicle and trailer at the same time, and off you go. I'm sure the guy with a $10,000 Side-by-side is willing to pay $20,000 for you to pick up his yard sale. That's the way to do your job, as seen from an Keyboard commando, sitting in his air conditioned Easy Boy, watching videos on TH-cam of people that work for a living.

Thank you for this.
Cameramen just like the adventure .
My Dad flew over my Brother and i
In His Keep we had fun bush wackin ...and my Gramps would hit all the cow patties on purpose as us kids hung onto his dune buggy and at night we'd play tag and try to play follow the leader and slam into bushes to take the lead.

Listening to Matt explain his equipment and vehicles shows just how much of a genius this man is! Like the Einstein of off road recovery🧠
So did the camera crew get the employee discount rate for their recovery?
And the Talons don't catch fire like the RZRs do.
Maybe someone will send you a new jump box. Ed will be so excited opening that package.
Using the ramp as a Lever would not be possible with a full ramp
Matt: love the sarcasm, best part of the vid, you're nicer then I would have been, LOL
Hey Purple Heart recipient, Thank You for your above and beyond service.
I know OLD video but just found it today after watching MANY others. I LOVED the explanation of the trailer! Best teacher in the world....EXPERIENCE!
Man, that sucks about the booster pack. Good ones aren't cheap. If someone found it, I'm sure they appreciate it!
Matt is the best natured person I watch on TH-cam, even though I’m jealous I don’t hold it against him that he’s got a great head of hair.
Yeah, those of us who are follically challenged might be jealous
He’s also got a great beard!
Really enjoying these videos thanks! Love hearing your mental process and seeing your ingenuity. Great stuff keep it up.
Matt, even your "rants" are so calm and polite! I love them.
I’d love to know the amount of UTV’s that cripple their front suspension in this park alone. Im amazed we see so many just on Matts channel.
Another great video, Randy is hilarious! Love when he's camera-man-ing.
For the people that complain about his trailer. Do me a favor build your own trailer take it out there. when you get stuck call WINDER TOWING and they will come get you out.
😂😂😂👍🏻
Everyone knows just out paddles on your trailer so you don't get stuck!
Yep... people saying put 8 wheels lol... It's a balance, as he said. Any bigger and it wouldn't be able to maneuver in tight spaces.
Don't know why I love watching your videos but I keep coming back n watching lots of them along with Fab Rats videos. You all just make them very interesting and do things I wish were around when I was younger. Keep em coming!! God Bless
I LOVE Max!! There 2 minutes and he CLAIMS the Talon as HIS!! "MY TALON!!" Also loved the multi-function aluminum ramp/pry-bar combo!! Clever!
Matt you have explained the trailer and you very through design serval times. At some point you just have to say to you self "they are just not getting it I give up"
Those questions are probably from newer subscribers who are still learning. After a couple videos the noobs get it. I say this...the more people that ask the same questions, the better. Why? It shows his subscriber numbers are ever increasing. I'm a cup half full sorta guy lol
@@scotttracy6840 The cup is always full, the question is full of what, water, water and air, or possibly questions and opinions from people that think and bs from the blowhards.
@@taulsk-1 suuure...be Mr always full lol. I never, in 43 years, thought about it like that. I gotta agree with all you've said. Blowhards haha! I haven't hard that word in YEEEEARS. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!🤘
I think you're being a little hard on yourself Matt - when you have mangled suspensions/subframes it'd be near impossible to drag up straight on a trailer anyway...
For sure these wrecks won’t pull straight - heck the fact they stay more or less together is good
Hard to line up the SxS when the 3 remaining wheels are all pointing different directions.
Matt: I pull a dump trailer with a battery to operate the hydraulic ram
Got tired of having to hand unload when the battery died.
Yes it’s always amazing how many people think they know more than the person who does it for a living. But I did like your explanation.
"You should have a full ramped, hydraulic tilt-bed" ...said no one who ever had to recover any kind of vehicle from the sand...Concur with Adam...."Don't read the comments"..
When you rescued the camrea crew do you charge them, or do they just take the recovery off the filming bill?😁
Your editing is freaking awesome these days 👌
Anybody else impressed with the dogs? Mine would be effing gone in two seconds.
Yes good doggos. My rottie won't leave me.
If your dog just runs away then the dog doesn’t like you 😂
Yep I have been thinking the same since I found this channel. Awesome he has his pups with him.
Lmao same. Mine would find the only thing out there and eat it.
FENTON!!!
I died laughing when he put down the Camara and said "is that what you guys want? " 🤣
Yeah, me to! 😂
Same
Max is just showing sympathy to the owner of the Talon! :)
Yeah ... never heard of a tripod. In many instances setting up a tripod on the side would be more interesting than his filming.
Good morning America. How are ya? don't you know me? I'm your native son.
Nice to see Max and Lady out but do miss Ed in this one.
Oh Mr Matt, you've done it again.
Good morning to you MrDayYumYum. Have a wonderful day!
These are just great guys. I aspire to have your patience and disposition in life. Thank you for being genuine, and a good soul.
Matt, I don't think you need to explain to anyone why you build the stuff you build. It works brother. Period... Love the show. Awesome jeep you built.
I feel cheated, No weather report with ED .
@@MattsOffRoadRecovery Matt gave a little report.
Yeah me 2. Always enjoy Ed's weather report.
Preach on Matt preach on!!! The best tool is not always the biggest tool... 😜
Now Matt's gonna get like five new jump boxes. :)
That's what I keep telling her, she doesn't seem to understand.
I just watch these videos to see Lady running around having fun.
It’s “ Your” trailer......enough said.
Amen!
Never sweat snarky comments about how you get in or out of a situation. Those who don't drive off-road, never figure on getting stuck (or how to get out) and we hope they never do, so you can keep filming.
Gotta love armchair quarterbacks telling you how to do your job. In an area you live in and they have probably never seen in person
Most probably have'nt seen their backyards.
I never understood why some people seem to enjoy criticizing these videos, I think they need to set back and enjoy the show.
I find it very interesting to see how people do things, everyone has a different method and who am I to say that any one is wrong? Besides I really enjoy the humor that you guys display even when things are tough 😎
I love the videos, keep up the good work 😎
Always one final trip around the vehicle for loose tools, gloves, jackets, chains. I’m pretty obsessed about that because things happen. Also, a 4x4x8’ makes for a pretty handy pry bar. Good show Matt!
"I wish you hadn't peed on that wheel, Max. I don't know why you'd do that." LOL
That part cracked me up.
Cuz I'm a dog. I can't help it.
Dog was just giving his opinion to the dumbass that wrecked that honda
He was marking his recovery territory :) haha
I love how the intro to all videos has turned out to be "so we got a call today"
I miss old Ed's weather report when he's not along for the job.
So, same procedure as always.
First like, then comment, then watch. Thank you Matt
Yep, 17 minute video posted 7 minutes so and already has 6 comments... 7 now maybe more in the time I've typed this.
Getting a new Matt video in the morning is like a guaranteed good day!
Hey man I appreciate watching Your videos and its obvious about the trailer..you know how people on the internet are. Rookies are certified pros and novices are experts in everything. Stay humble folks. Love the channel#!
helpful tip: A Hi Lift jack is a handy ghetto come-along. You can use it to move very heavy loads sideways, support fallen trees, lift a wall you're framing all by yourself, straighten out a bent radiator support, etc.
After seeing the front end damage I was expecting to see brown stains on the seats.
Hope no one was hurt.
Could have had 💩 stains. We never did see inside except the one shot from the right side when Matt checked to make sure it was out of gear.
Lol
"So we got a call today--- from our camera crew....."
@k henne Heck I think I would pay to be on Matt's camera crew, looks like a lot of fun! 🤣
A "coffee through the nose moment on this comment!"
Randy does a great job!
Sorry not that simple
@@gcp6049 I'm not sure you caught the snark in my message - Very sorry that I didn't write it clearer - unless your reply is snark, then I totally missed it myself.
I can always tell when a you tuber gets too many snarky questions from guys who know how to do it better....in their own minds. Keep doin it YOUR way!!
Matt, I think you use your head and experience on everything you do. Even though you run out of gas . Thanks for telling and showing us why you do what you do. I'm sure it is a learning experience for a lot of people. Right on matt.✌
"gonna have to narrow that down" gives us it unedited so we can bask in the glory of your rant.
For sale, Honda Talon, new suspension and tires. Max: "nope, I peed on it, it's mine now"
