- It's always difficult to film after dark, but we give it a try anyway. Getting a barge to the dock doesn't get easier after dark either.

Hi Tim. Yes, I was an airline pilot with BOAC which in the 1970s became British Airways. I flew the Boeing 707. You are right that we always taught 'never trust your eyes - your brain will tell you you see what you want to see'. Instead, trust your instruments. The greatest gifts for flying are the ones you demonstrate in your videos, which are planning and spatial awareness. You have both.
Thank you very much for watching and for making my day! I really appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
Docking at night is a whole different critter, Nice to watch a professional in action. Thanks for bringing us aboard
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Your aviation reference was spot on. Retired air traffic here after 40+ years. Airline pilots almost always fly by instruments, but not believing them has killed a lot of GA (private) pilots. JFK Jr was a classic case. He got caught over water at night with reduced visibility. If he had only believed his instruments (the aircraft was equipped, but he didn't have his instrument rating yet) he and his passengers would still be here. His head told him he was turning while instruments said he was level. When he followed his head, he went into a spiral. It was a sad tale but happens way too often. The official description was continued visual flight into instrument conditions.
I had the experience in the right seat. Flying in the clouds, looked down to grab a chart. When I came back up my head was convinced that we were in a turn. It took a couple minutes of watching the instruments to believe that we were actually straight and level. Had I been flying (without a license), we would have been in trouble.
Right after JFK jr I had several private, instrument pilots request additional instruction at night out over the Gulf. Distractions would cause them to panic, listening to the head . Very tense moments before believing the gauges. Excellent learning situation for newbie’s. All of my students are put though a night time over the black water. Real life situation.
Thank you for watching John. I appreciate you sharing your experience with us. CUOTO
One thing I have learned watching your videos is that docking is a lot more complicated than I thought. A lot of variables to consider. Wind, tide, speed for example.
Thank you for watching Steve. The average weekend recreational boater has a power to weight ratio a few thousand times higher than we do. So they usually have the power to get them out of a bad situation. We have to plan it out because it takes so much more time and energy to stop or change the direction of a bigger unit. CUOTO
I completely agree
A lot of respect for all you professionals.
Thank you for watching Charles. CUOTO
Working with natural elements and understanding them is by far the best . Great job Tim .
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
My uncle always told me. Always believe your compass. That was 70 years ago. No chart plotters back then. 😊
Thank you very much for watching George. CUOTO
My favorite Tug boat Captain ⚓️⛴️ CUOTO
Thank you very much Doug! I appreciate that. CUOTO
Funny comment about pilots, in ground school when I was getting my pilot's license the instructor used maritime as an example of windage and navigation. BTW dad jokes never get old :)
😂😂😂 💯 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Marinate!
Too funny.
Thanks Tim
CUOTO
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching Jerome. CUOTO
Your comment regarding commercial airline pilot viewers reminded me of personal contact with two pilots. I was transiting O'Hara and another airport. The two pilots, both working for legacy airlines and nearing retirement, were utterly captivated upon learning I had, at the time, only a 100 ton license. One pilot spent roughly 20 minutes with me grilling me about my work and how to acquire certification and licensing.
Interesting. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Man!! Chief is absolutely spot on!! 👌 I'm sure you already know how blessed you are to be working with the fella. Lol. You guys work really well together!
Next time you see him or you have a hitch together, please let him know some ramdom dude in alberta 🇨🇦 is thoroughly impressed! Lol
Also, dalton is absolutely hilarious!!! I seen his video the other day. Lol. Day in a life
Cuoto ✌️
Thank you for watching Jason. Yes 💯! He is the man and I'm lucky to have him. CUOTO
PS (I've sent him a screenshot of your comment)
All I could think of was that scene from “Airplane”…. They’re on Instruments!!!🥁 🎺🎷😂 #CUOTO
😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channels Ian. CUOTO
Your videos are always a "Good Deal" - thanks!
Thank you for watching John. CUOTO
Tim, watching an older trip, your last one up the East River, before you took the job in the Caribbean. I have so many memories of doing that same trip in my Pearson Electra (22 foot sloop) with a 5 HP Johnson twice for a weeklong cruise out the Sound and back.. tide dependent, we never sailed...The second time I did we buddy sailed with the same boat captained by a Hooker in training... what a blast...see you on the ones....We came out of Great Kills on Staten Island, and ran with the tide all the way to Hell Gate, "grossly overrated,"for small boats...and then east out the sound....
Thank you very much for watching. If you get the tide right, it can be a very nice trip. CUOTO
Electra!!! I had #91 in Ossining before I bought a J/24 . This was back in 1977. Great boat but I could never get the rig tight. Used the spinnaker topping lift as a jackstay to keep the mast from inverting lol. Good memories when I saw "Electra". CUOTO and hi, Tim! Nice video as usual!!
@@williamsestrom6355 I had #199.
Good morning Captain Tim!
I’m wearing my Tim-B-At-Sea Tee-Shirt, so I’m your swabby crew member. I guess I had better get work cleaning or painting.
CUOTO
😂😂😂😂 That's great Mellissa! Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channels and wearing the shirt! CUOTO
Tim,
there is nothing wrong with a good "Dad Joke" or three !!! ;))
Robbo in Brisbane, Australia
A dad and also a Grand-dad
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel Robbo. CUOTO
Thank you Tim! I have always liked your approach to docking; you take your time, let wind and tide be your support and you save power and momentum to the situations you really need it. I totally agree with your way of doing it. But then I meet a lot of skippers that are the total opposite😅 They say "oh, don't be afraid of the dock, just use your power and speed and go for it" and they produce a lot of black smoke (and risk of damage)😅 And it makes me wonder; are there kind of two "schools" when it comes to docking? The black-smoke-risktakers on one hand and the more calm and defensive ones on the other..? I think you can see the different types in the leisure boat world to😅 By the way; it would be interesting if you shared some thoughts on docking on board Paquita also, when you get under way😃
Thank you very much for watching Magnus. I think you are right. I see a lot more of the guys on the recreational side coming into the hooked up. It is very rare that I see that with barges and ships because they are so much harder to stop. Here is a link of me docking Paquita a few years ago. CUOTO

Another smooth alongside Tim. Yes instruments are great but so are your two seamans eye balls! Thanks again.
Thank you very much for watching John. CUOTO
I always learn something. Thank you.
Thank you for watching Len. CUOTO
Take a drink 🍸 everytime Tim says "very good" lol 😆 I'm drunk already! Time to watch another video!
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
As a european, it's a really good geography lesson for me tracking your movements. I last saw you in Baltimore and now you're in the Delaware so I zoomed in on google to find what route you would have taken as I was sure you wouldn't go the coastal route. Lo and behold I discovered a canal connecting them called Back Creek. My geography education continues :) CUOTO
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel Joe! I have a number of videos of us going through the C&D Canal. Here is a link to the last one. th-cam.com/video/OSUg7XxV3g0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jGH9jZTB2Y5fD8QG
CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Thanks for the link, Tim. It's all starting to make sense to me now.Sometimes when you mention place names I don't recognise if you're in New York or not. Never been to the US but it's great to see bits of it through your eyes. 👍 CUOTO
The questions is Tim .... what do you marinate in?
😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Tim B ... " but over here sense we're on the water we marinate" !!! Keep those observant tidbits coming Capt. CUOTO / CUOT2
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching George! CUOTO
I followed your sailboat down and up.
Outstanding! That is wonderful. Thank you very much. I hope to have her back in the water again soon. CUOTO
👏✅ very nice your special effects lighting on this one Tim 😂😂😂
Thank you for watching! CUOTO
Interesting how the state line runs very near to those three power-house stacks. Good job Tim.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
That is typical. Maryland owns the Potomac up to the high water line on the Virginia side.
I grew up there and don't live far from there now! Pretty cool to see from your point of view
Thank you for watching Anthony. CUOTO
Cool another landing
Thank you for watching Ed. CUOTO
I could see the speed of the container ship by referencing off the bow of the barge and watching the running lights on the ship as it moved past.
Thank you for watching. CUOTO
You've got modern instruments that are better than "eyeballs". Best to trust them.
Thank you for watching Richard. CUOTO
Great Video
Thank you for watching Anthony. CUOTO
Hello Tim! What a fun ride. SO pretty with all the lights. Thanks!! I'm a Grammy in Pennslyvania. Love watching your channel.
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel! CUOTO
Piloting a tug and barge is very similar to Piloting an airplane.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Nice job. Interesting twist on shooting the stern from that side. But like you said, you were talking.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Thank you very much Tim. Love watching your videos for several years now. You'd have been a fine pilot I think. But you are a mariner.
I love listening to your thought process as you go through it.
Thank you very much for watching all these years! I appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
Man... that was easy! NOT... nicely done!
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
nice sunset enjoyed the video thank you Tim
Thank you for watching James. CUOTO
Great Video, CUOTO.
Thank you for watching James. CUOTO
Would've enjoyed hearing the radio comms between you and that ship that crossed your bow. Also, why not use your spot/flood lights to illuminate the docking area to have a better idea of what you were up against Tim?
Thank you very much for watching Mikey. The search lights often do more harm than good to both my eyes and the guy's eyes on deck as well. We will use the search light when we feel it will help more than it hurts. CUOTO
Great parking, great crew, be safe,God bless al
Thank you very much for watching Elizabeth! CUOTO
Very nice docking. What did you think of the lateral Dali move to dock with I think was 5 assist tugs. Quite a sight. Thank you CUOTO
Thank you for watching. Yes. They did a great job. CUOTO
Looks very difficult in the dark, Nice job as always
Thank you for watching Wayne. CUOTO
Got a little dark but it was still a good ride thanks for having me along
Thank you for watching Dale. It does seem to get dark when the sun goes down. CUOTO
Thanks Cap’n
Thank you very much for watching Doc! CUOTO
Another excellent video. It is good to see a night time video. 👍
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Loved getting to marinate with you! #CUOTO.
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching (and marinating). CUOTO
Love watching a Professional!
Thank you for watching. I appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
Thx for the vid. Captain.
Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Nice job. Since i could barely see.. Id say trust your instruments.. As always very interesting..God bless. Safe travels 🌹🙏❤️
Thank you very much for watching Dottie! CUOTO
My father was an airline pilot. He loved to sail. Many similarities.
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
nice sunset we didnt get one here it was raining and still is oh well we dont have to shovel rain great video as usual thanks Tim G
Thank you for watching Garth. CUOTO
Hi Tim nice view at night neon lights always have a great feeling ,it makes me calm have a great night mate be safe ❤️🙏😃👍🦘🇦🇺🇺🇸🧌
Thank you for watching Jess! CUOTO
CUOTO! always enjoyable!
Thank you for watching Lester. CUOTO
Best vid yet
Really? That's fantastic! Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Tell your cohorts at Marmon that they are awesome getting the Dali moved.
Thank you very much for watching. They did a great job! CUOTO
All pilots don't trust their instruments b/c a fair number of them are not "Rated to use their Instruments" and that limits a lot of
flights b/c flying visually requires that the weather be good & no weather is expected on their flight plans. I'm not a pilot either
but I watch some of their channel as I do yours & both professions require a great deal of common sense over -n- above all the
technical stuff you must know. Thank you Captain for another waterway scene & I LQQK forward to the next one, Lord willing!
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
A question, if you please: Why, when ships are being escorted by tugs through the temporary channel between the remains of the Key Bridge, does the tug in the lead go backwards?
Thank you for watching Kenneth. Those are Tractor tugs and operate much differently than the conventional tugs I run. I would guess that they do it that way because their primary winch is mounted on their bow. CUOTO
nice nice
Thank you for watching all these years. CUOTO
11:30-11:45 not questioning your statement regarding instruments, however, how was it done before "instruments"?
Thank you very much for watching. Things certainly have changed. But back then, before instruments, barges and ships were much smaller and many didn't operate in dark or poor conditions. CUOTO
I learned watching Dali coverage that a ship has to run at a certain minimum speed to maneuver im guessing.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel Steven. Yes. Large ships don't have a transmission or reverse gear. They are directly coupled to the shaft and propeller. So if the ship's engine is running at dead slow, anything slower is shutting down the main. Also, the rudder loses most of it's effectiveness when the propeller is not turning. CUOTO
Aviation is half hands and feet.. most of the book learning is during PPL
Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Your jokes are fine. Is there a particular time where visually looking is hardest? I hear in aviation it’s about dusk and possibly dawn.
I would tend to agree. Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Private pilot here, but in IFR conditions you do not have a choice, you have to trust your instruments.
Thank you for watching Bruce. CUOTO
Konnichiwa y'all!
What are the ladder-like structures that appear to have an array of lights on them on the barges?
It's just inward from the port side light in this video. I'm guessing something like pump or tank status.
You are correct! Thank you very much for watching. Those are high level alarms for the 10 tanks on the barge. CUOTO
Plus communication very important
Marinate, Navigate, Communicate. Thank you very much for watching Ed. CUOTO
Lol
I watch all your videos but now I'm waiting for you to splash SV Pacita again. When's that going to happen?
Thanks Tim👍
Good morning Alex! Thank you for watching. I am currently working on Paquita, but she is buried deep in the boat yard, so everyone has to go back into the water before we can start blasting her hull. Thank you again! CUOTO
Oh look aDali your thumbnail ✌️
Thank you for watching John. CUOTO
Common sense and learned experience are they human instruments? Experience is a great teacher.
Thank you for watching Paul. Agreed 💯! CUOTO
"Trust your instruments" is something all of the E&I Techs at the factory always say and half the time they're wrong. 😂
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
I understand 😅
Thank you for watching George. CUOTO
Good Morning great videos. Where is your home port? Your last video was in the Delaware River Gloucester Area.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. This was in the Delaware River too. Our regular tug is home ported in Philadelphia, but we are usually between Puerto Rico, Texas and Maine. CUOTO
Oh by the way how is the boat doing getting it ready to sail
The Tug is underway with the other crew and SVP is coming along. A bit slowly, but we are making progress. And now she has a beautiful new Cutting board and drybag! Thank you very much! CUOTO
They sure lit that place up. All ways beware of forward inertia I say.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Night ops 🎉🎉🎉!
Thank you for watching Sput!! Hope all is well on your trip South it SVV. CUOTO
Tim,, I found this video on CG History it is not a happy one but a educational one and very very sad, I hope you are interested I am sure it would, Brian
Thank you for watching Brian. I'll take a look. CUOTO
👍😎👍
Thank you for watching Chris. CUOTO
Oh by the way Tim that rumble is no big deal tell them that
😂 Thank you very much for watching Ed. That's what I'll tell them. CUOTO
Trust BUT verify ALL instruments LOL
Thank you for watching John. CUOTO
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for watching Butch. CUOTO
It would be nice if an insert of plotter could be had
Thank you very much for watching. It's just me up there. I used to do multi cam shoots, but it became so laborious editing, that I ended up almost giving up making videos altogether. Now I am back having fun making content again, all be it, not as great as multiple camera content. CUOTO
I don't mean to bug you,I just put Marine Traffic App on my tablet. Will it let me see you when you are moving?
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. Yes. It should show the tug even when we are not moving. But we have been on different tugs while our regular tug was in the shipyard. She's out now. CUOTO
Intersesting that you referred to the large ship as 'he'.
Thank you for watching. No, I was referring to the pilot on the ship. CUOTO
CUOTO
Thank you for watching Gregory. CUOTO
???
Are allowed to talk about the changes on a video?
And thank you for answering my (?) regarding (9/11).
What are nautical miles versus miles per hour?
Sincerely!
R.S.V.
Thank you for watching. Statute mile is 5280 feet. A nautical mile is 6080 feet. CUOTO
Tim you were totally correct on the thing of the prop rumbling well years back I rode the ferry’s New York harbor well they do the same thing when maneuvering
Oh, thank God! 😂 Thank you so much for watching Ed! I really appreciate it. CUOTO
I don’t know where these people get that I guess they never did anything
Tim right from the start I knew I said to myself these dudes had no clue about that
Not all subscribers are pilots , this one is a sheep farmer in west wales .
(I love that! My favorite post today!) Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
@11:57 - Believe NONE of what you hear and only half of what you actually see.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Yup, trust your instruments; and Murphy's Law applies, whether you're aviating or marinating. I disagree with your thought that you would not be a good pilot. Good judgment is the most important attribute required for safe flying, and you demonstrate that all the time.
Thank you very much for watching and making my day! I appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
What does “in clutch” or something like that mean?
Put in gear - either forward or reverse, and leave engine at idle. Allows for slow speed manoeuvres with no drama.
Thank you for watching Stuart. Like paul said, minimum power. CUOTO
