If you're drag racing, your AC will add extra resistance to the engine, so the engine wont be able to push that power to the wheels where you need it. There is a reason you should listen to Andre.
This is why AC compressors have a magnetic clutch; the clutch disengages the AC compressor from the accessory drive under full throttle to protect the compressor from potential over-speed, simply because the compressor wouldn’t be long for this world with repeated brief encounters with 6000 rpm. Proven this out on a dyno just to see for shits- turning the AC off does nothing to improve power under full throttle as it’s ALREADY disconnected via the clutch under full-throttle. On a modern vehicle it’s simply not necessary to turn off the AC. It is true that an engaged AC compressor saps around 4hp(3kW) with the associated penalty to fuel consumption at anything other than full throttle. Idk how many people drag race at 3/4 throttle- so sure is you’re doing that for some odd reason then by all means, turn off the AC. That’s an old habit from a bygone era- 4cyl cars in the 80s & 90s were noticeably more sluggish with the AC on- also, an AC clutch typically has a lifespan of proper operation of 8-10 years. They usually go bad before the compressor.
What they all said here. I used to have a 91 Pontiac LeMans 1.6, and it had a sensor problem whereby the AC would not turn off under full throttle, so I had to turn it off if I wanted to pull out into fast traffic. Made a huge difference- because the car was faulty.
