“...haven’t had a RNAV in ages....” that was brilliant :))))
That's my boy!
Please take him flying again!!
Hillarious!! 😂
James' little jump when you shouted clear was brilliant 🤣
I miss my PlayStation when I go flying too...
Logged a few TH-cam hours with you as well Stefan, you are much more local to me....
Another very good video Jon. Film work and post production are always excellent but family comments are the great un rehearsed bits. 'Shark Island', RNav approach, "already packed away" and James nodding and the music box soundtrack had me feeling tired! Showing you support and solidarity by linking our flight at the end of my next video. Happy Landings
Thank you a Tim, that’s very kind of you.
Great videos. I'm working towards my PPL and find them very helpful. Thanks for the great work!
Thanks Florian.
Hi Jon this vid really brings to home the importance of instrument rating for GA. I simply wanted to learn to land a P28 in an emergency when flying with friends but I may yet check with my local service at Sywell and see what this silly 63 year old can achieve. You inspire many new pilots and even more of us who have the desire but have many fears at the same time. Many thanks for posting these very informative and very natural flying trips that for me have become flying lessons, especially when you also show your concerns and will become an old pilot not a bold pilot.
Thanks for watching Drew. Let me know how you get on at Sywell.
Yea go for it Drew, you are never too old to learn mate, flying is just the best!!
David Cornwell my only concern is passing the medical. I had a heart attack in 2012 but have lost 42 lbs and have become very fit since. Also used to have type 2 diabetes but am now clear. Maybe I should have the medical before bothering Sywell?
Drew when it comes to medicals I'm your man mate. So sorry to hear about your heart attack, but you have done incredibly well to lose 42lb and get yourself fit with no diabetes. May I suggest that you take advantage of the new self-declaration rules now in force by the CAA. If you fly or learn to fly an aircraft less than 2000 kg such as the Ikarus C42 microlight you won't have to bother with the medical so long as you aren't on any happy pills for your brain. This is what the CAA say.
" To only fly aircraft no greater than 2000 kg MTOM
You may fly an aircraft no greater than 2000kg MTOM, provided you are not taking medication for any psychiatric illness. If you are taking medication for a psychiatric illness you must consult an AME and apply for a LAPL medical certificate".
I am assuming you meet the medical standards for the DVLA ordinary driving license if you do and aren't banned from driving then you have no problem mate so good luck!
David Cornwell think I will have a chat with my local airport at Connington as it’s only 2 miles from my house and chat with as many pilots as I can. They always welcome non flying buds for a coffee and a good brekkie. Also I have an airport near wandsford which I cycle past on my weekly 100 miles rides. Much to consider mate so wow so kind to start the ball rolling and get the grey matter all excited again. Can I chat again if I need to please.
Brilliant. I would to see your IFR planning process, like you did for VFR planning. I found it really useful in my own training and very easy to understand.
Another fabulous video, Jon. Your videos are by way and by far consistently the best GA flying videos that I ever view and a real inspiration to those of us with a desire to learn to fly in the future. Thank you.
Thanks Jon.
Wonderful Jon! All your vids are so beautifully put together, it's a real treat watching them.
Glad you enjoy them.
Super smooth landing Jon given the x-wind. Top notch 😎
Interesting to watch a RNAV being done. I downloaded the NATS chart whilst watching your vid. and learnt a lot.
When I flew IFR BIG to Lydd decades ago it was an NDB letdown causing my brain 🧠 to explode with the work load ! Great fun
Ive only ever done one NDB approach, and don’t want to do one again.
A fantastic flight and production again Jon. You've come a long way and look every inch a very proficient and confident pilot. James obviously thought so, dropping off over the channel!
Thank you Kevin. Getting there slowly.
Hi Jon. I let my instrument rating go but I'm going to get it back after watching this because weather can mess things up at times. Appreciate the video. Fly safe.
Thanks Gary. It’s a great skill to have up your sleeve
Nice video Jon, first time in a while I've had a chance to watch one and nice to see you looking more relaxed in the cockpit these days.
And well done to James for agreeing to the flight, even though he obviously wasn't looking forward to it. Looks like you have a new snoozing co-pilot for future trips!
Thanks for watching the episode. Slowly the confidence builds. I think my European tour this spring really helped.
Will catch up with those over the weekend, looks like you experienced some pretty challenging flying that helped you realise you actually do know what you're doing up there!
Hi Lon,
I really like the way you produce your videos. Informative and well put together.
Most of my flying is in the US and it's really busy here especially in the New York area. Some day I'd like to fly in the UK, it looks a little quieter there. So, great job and keep up the good work.
Thanks Richard.
FANTASTIC once again. Already looking forward to the next episode.
Great Video Jon, beautiful above the clouds and excellent landing even with that wind. Pleased you all had a lovely weekend ✈️
Thanks Stewart.
I really like the editing and sound mixing of this episode. Great work!
Thanks Tim.
Lydd airport seems to be always windy!!!.....good flight thanks for posting.......
That’s so true...always 10knots windier than inland!
Well done, nice landing with a higher approachspeed because off the wind.
Great video John!
Never used the ortac3a in the c172 but very common when at work in the dash8. Nice vid!
Thanks Liam. Seems odd doing a SID in a spamcan, but why not eh?
@@TheFlyingReporter Why not indeed, I would. Be good to visit Jersey again in groly in the future
Weather...grrr...plus ça change... :-)
You had a great trip and made it home safely. What more can you ask for?
Hi Jon, It's brilliant how you've progressed. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Chris.
Nicely done jon.very professional.
Thanks Sean.
@@TheFlyingReporter you are welcome Jon.That was one hell of a crosswind.
Hi Jon, thanks for the amazing videos; just one thing RAIM is not Remote but Receiver, it stands for Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring. Cheers
Thanks.
Great logging TH-cam hours ... nice flight ! Where next?
TBC. Was going to be Spain this week, but the aircraft maintenance has overrun.
Good one. Even more on the RNAV would have been good (for me). A very interesting flight.
Great video Jon and I loved Bertie’s “Shark” island! Would like to know more about RNAV approaches. I think you did another one a while back at Lydd. Assume you can’t do an RNAV approach to Redhill?
You can only do instrument approaches, to aerodromes with instrument approach procedures, redhill doesn’t have any.
‘’ I haven’t had a good RNAV in ages’’ ? That and the bedtime music is too much. Nice video.
Great video Jon - I've seen a number of your other videos and you looked and sounded extremely confident on this one. I also have an IMC rating but was never taught about SID's and STAR's, other than they existed. By coincidence, I did my IMC renewal yesterday and did vectors to SRA, which I also hadn't done before. Were you taught SRA / SID's / STAR's when you did your IMC rating? As others have said, I'd be interested in a video about the IFR flight planning process, including where to get the SID info / plate from! Great video, keep them coming!
The sids and stars are in the AIP alongside the other aerodrome charts and info. Wasn’t specifically trained on them, but just a case of reading them, and doing what they say. Take a look at the jersey Ortac 3A, very easy. I have never done a SRA, ought to do one at some point.
Great video. : @0:45 did you mean we will be in IMC almost as soon as we take off ?
His face when you shout "clear prop" XD
I like to keep him on edge.
Hi Jon, another great video, please keep them coming, one question, ROMTI nav point does not show up on my SkyDemon, SANDY and ARNUN are there but no ROMTI, I've got the airway reporting points turned on but it's not there. Any thoughts?
Keith
Very nice
Thanks.
Good job. Good video.
Thanks for watching.
Great IMC flight Jon. Delighted to hear James has nicely habituated to the flight environment. Am I correct in guessing Lydd Approach is non-radar based on your full approach and position reporting for the RNAV procedure. Also are u autopilot-equipped to help with the IFR workload? That wind was blowing based on the windsock! Douglas
Thanks Douglass. Lydd is non radar, yes. The autopilot is naff, and doesn't work!
How did you guesstimate the crosswind? I’d have had to pull out the whizzwheel (which wouldn’t have worked so well in a helicopter!).
Runway 21...wind 240@24. 30 degrees off runway heading. 30/60 (1/2) of 24 is 12. 12knot crosswind. Basically. Over 60 degrees off runway heading, it's a full crosswind.
The Flying Reporter thanks!
Thanks for another great video Jon. Does your other half nod off as easily in the car? Just asking as my wife is usually asleep within 30 minutes when we're off somewhere, especially on the motorway!!
Yes, all the time!
Stupid question but what do you do if you need the loo?
Not easy if you're the pilot flying.
Must take a lot of the fun out of the process. I know it’s a good way of getting around but if you get caught short, you’ve got a problem.
9:44 I have no idea why this made me laugh so hard. Hahaa.
Hi Jon, great video. As one other viewer said I'd also be interested in your flight planning for IFR flights. I take it you had to file a flight plan hence the tower knew you wanted an IFR departure but were you expecting the ORTAC 3A departure? Would it have phased you at all if you were given one of the other SIDs? Did you fly the QDM to ALD NDB or can you just set it up as a waypoint in the GPS?
Lots of points there. I filed an IFR flight plan via Ortac, so was expecting the ORTAC 3A. A different aid wouldn’t have been difficult to sort, but this was the only one that worked with my route. I was set up to fly the QDM to ALD, had it tuned etc. But would have flown it on the GPS. I was given direct ORTAC after take off.
Ah ex bmi A319....done many a daily check on that one!
Fabulous music as you’re starting up and taking off Jon. It sounds like AC/DC or Airbourne? Looks like you had a good holiday anyway.
Thanks Rory. Had a great time thanks. It’s some lift music from Epidemic Sound.
Well it’s great - does sound amazingly similar to the afore mentioned. This film really makes me want to get an IR(R)
Let’s hope it has a life beyond next year....
The Flying Reporter indeed. There surely has to be something like it.
BIR is what they will replace it with, an EASA basic instrument rating. Harder to obtain, not as hard as the full IR, and the privileges are better.
9:48 "Oh the RNAV, not had a good RNAV in ages"
I think I need to do some instrument training and gain a rating to really extend what I can do. Are you using an IMC or full instrument rating?
Also, a good R Nav.... brilliant!
Hi Matt. It's IMC / IR(r)
Fantastic Jon, I really loved the Ortac 3 departure procedure. Can you just tell me what the name of your tablet is as presumably it has GPS and accelerometers built into it to be able to run Sky Demon? Also, I guess you must have a full instrument rating, not just an IMC is that right? Thank you so much for posting Awesome stuff.
Hi David. Ipad mini GPS/Cellular. You only need a tablet with GPS, or a tablet that can connect to an external GPS. I run mine off the Pilot Aware GPS, as it's receiver seems more reliable that the ipad's internal GPS. You can fly IFR in the channel islands with an IMC rating. Jon
Great thanks Jon.
"I'm terrified of [YAWN] flyi..." zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz brilliant!
"SHARK Island!!!" That got Berties attention
They should rename it. It would become quite a tourist attraction. They could come up with some story about a how it got its name.
"We're going to need a lot of quiet here". Er, no one was talking anyway!
Ok where is Romty???
4.4 miles from Lydd’s NDB on QDR 171 degrees. In other words 4.4 miles North North West of Lydd.
Thanks john, I'm meant to be flying there tomorrow from Denham, but the weather is not looking good and I going over your approach ;)
Well done Jon for the full combo flight (IMC & family & water & rnav & weather) !
Curious question on pushing my luck with an IRR, on departure I guess you would have refused a clreance with Benix3/5A routing as it will put you inside Brest FIR where an IMC rating is not valid, so you had to ask for a ORTAC2/3A routing beforehand?
I could not accept a clearance in French FIR, only Uk, and Channel Islands CTR.
UK IFR communication seems very wordy compared to Aus and the US, you’re requesting hand-off to the next controller and telling them your flight plan each time where that’s taken care of by the air traffic controllers for us down under
This is not proper IFR, this is PPL IFR flying mostly outside controlled airspace. I’m utilising a restricted instrument rating which does not allow flight in class A, so quite different.
The Flying Reporter even as an IFR (private or commercial doesn’t matter) flight in class G uncontrolled airspace here in Aus we receive hand-offs between area sectors and traffic information (not separation) for the duration of the flight, if we’re entering into controlled airspace ATC will organise our clearance and hand us off to approach and we simply checkin with call sign and height. It seems odd that as a PPL instrument rating holder that they’re asking you to do more of the work and manage more tasks. I recall JP ‘The candourist’ and Matt Guthmiller were both very confused about the different services in their video when they crossed into the UK in the 210.
That's great. We have a two-tier system here.
