Hello, I part owned GBMIV for many years. I wrote the SOPs for our group. I have flown my family to various places in it - long trips like the South of France and to very short fields like the narrow 450m Oxenhope at 1100amsl near Howarth in Yorkshire. I could share a lot of history about this aircraft with you. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. John
I fly an Arrow out of a 780m runway and I thought I was crazy! 450m is nothing
Congrats on the new wings Jon, look forward to seeing what you get up to in it.
Thanks Stef. Looking forward to undertaking some long trips for sure.
I do love a youtube love-fest!
Congratulations on the new wings Mr Hunt! Looks like an amazing aircraft. Here’s to many hours cloud surfing and enjoying the skies. ✈️
Thank you Noel. Can't fly it enough at the moment.
look who dropped by..our famous Mr Philips
Hi, As with John Garry, I too had part ownership of IV. Very fond memories flying her
Amazing! I grew up in Elmsett Jon and moved away to Leicestershire when I was 23. I got my PPL 6 years ago (am 44 now) and my parents had no idea I was doing it until I flew to Elmsett and met them by surprise. Great little airfield
Great news, I just bought an arrow I 1969 and I am loving it.
"I'll pay on my return" That old chestnut!🤣🤣 Great video Jon thank you, and nice of the Red Arrows to do a fly by to celebrate one of your maiden flights!
Thanks Stuart.
Great video Jon.
She looks very nice indeed.
Good idea to take it slowly at first until you are comfortable with everything.
I enjoyed watching you bring your new Piper Arrow home to Redhill followed by your first flight. Thanks. Looking forward to future flights.
Congrats on the new plane mate. I loved your comment, “It’s the perfect plane for me.”
Great content, makes me smile. So from Australia, a massive thank you from me. Keep being brilliant.
Thank you so much Benjamin.
Very happy for you, been flying my own since last summer and there’s nothing like it.
Congratulations on the new plane, Jon. My next step up will be to a (hired) PA28R Arrow 200, so will look forward to seeing your upcoming adventures.
Lovely aircraft Jon, congratulations.
I'm looking forward to the flying adventures.
There are plenty to come Melanie.
How exciting, a new aircraft. It makes all the difference when it’s your own. The flashing amber light is a distraction and may make you miss other warning lights…take the bulb out or inhibit the system. Power settings - I have a laminated card just above the throttle quadrant…very useful. Undercarriage- I keep my hand on the lever until I see all greens, and then say it. My final approach call at a 1000’ is “reds, blues, three greens” followed by my intention and clearance. Like you I’ve forgotten to put it up on the go around but never forgotten to lower it. Happy flying John
Congratulations Jon! She’s a beaut!
Jon. When you go around, say your check list out loud. "Power up, pitch up, gear up, flaps up. Attitude, altitude, airspeed"
Ah that brings back memories for me. I had an Arrow 1 some years back and really loved it. Never got to try a turbo version though.
The auto-gear extension never really works on these old aeroplanes so you’ll find it disabled and nearly all of them (like mine). After a while you’ll be disabling that flashing warning light! It’’ drive you crazy otherwise.
You flew past my home airfield at Hinton. If you want to practise your short landings, this is the place. If you are worried about the parachute jumping, they don’t operate on Mondays.
Enjoy your new machine and happy landings.
Thanks Jon, another good video and a lovely machine. As always your videos inspire my own PPL journey presently in one of the many Robins at AFC
You're going to love it. I've owned an T-Arrow IV since 2007. Be careful with the engine management, they're easy to toast. I've found it to cruise very nicely at 65% power at 15000ft giving 155 kts so go buy an O2 bottle ;-) Just recently flew from KSAF to KBFI in a day a couple of weeks ago so very easy to cover large distances.
Thanks Alex.
Many congrats on the new purchase she looks like a great buy. I'm sure sole ownership will be great for you . Must of been difficult when you have multiple owners .
Congratulations for aquiring India Victor. Freedom & responsibility is quite a heady mix.
Yes, I do feel the weight of the responsibility.
Delighted for you Jon 👍😀
I learnt to drive at Turweston Aerodrome many many moons ago 😄 As kids we used to help the gliding club drive the winch cable back down the runway.
Congratulations Jon. Like so many others I am really looking forward to your upcoming adventures. Wishing you the best of luck with your new aeroplane.
Thank you Nigel.
Another great video and what a nice looking aircraft. Hopefully one day I’ll be in a position to do the same and buy one of my own.👍
John congratulations on your purchase. Lucky for me I bought an Arrow11 one year ago and still smile every time I go up in her.
Thanks. The arrow smile.
Glad to see you enjoying the new aircraft! Give me a shout the next time you are coming to Kemble.
2.41 The calibrated engineer’s boot, I remember it well!
Very nice new Piper !! Congratulations Jon ! A superb interior and lovely colour. Great choice !
Thank you Christophe.
Great video thanks Jon. Looking forward to more adventures with India Victor.
Congratulations, Jon and welcome to the ranks of aircraft owners! Thanks for taking the time and trouble to make another great video while being so busy. I hope you have many satisfying flights in your new aeroplane.
Thank you for watching.
Many congrats Jon . It’s a whole new World now , and I look forward to your next video . Fly safe .
Nice Video Jon, congratulations on your new purchase. Looking forward to your next adventures.
Tu$$$$$$$$$$rbo charged!!!!!! Many hrs. in similar aircraft. Loved it!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy this beautiful aircraft!
Congrats on a fine acquisition.
That flashing orange light might need a blown bulb though :)
Congratulations on the new wings. Arrows are great aircraft, underrated in my opinion, I'm based at kemble now, flying pa28s with freedom aviation, kemble can get very busy at times, but ATC are excellent. If you're visiting again, let me know, I'll buy you a coffee!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks Tim.
Congratulations, what a new bird, i should wish all the best and will be tuning to see you flying this magnificent plane.
Thanks.
Well Done!!! Interior looks a bit "used/worn" and dated but it is a classic plane......you'll soon feel at home with IV Happy Safe flying
Thank you Richard.
Brilliant video as always Jon. You've realised most peoples dream of owning your own aircraft :)
Thanks Tom. Just got to work hard enough to pay to run it now
Very pleased that you have your own plane now Jon! Exciting times ahead 👍
Thanks. i think so Kevin.
A Wonderfull Purchase
Great stuff Jon. I was based at Wattisham (Phantoms) in the 1970s/80s and learned to fly at the old Ipswich airport and then Sibson / Connington. Great area for flying.
Congratulations on the new purchase, the Arrow is a solid machine. Looking forward to seeing where you take IV in the future.
Congrats!!!! Enjoy IV and fly safely! Keep the great videos going! Thank you
Thank you.
Absolutely brilliant news. Well done I am really looking forward to your future content as it is so good. Many happy landings.
Thank you!
Excellent Jon. Congratulations on the purchase - I love the Arrow!
Hopefully you can tell, I do too.
Congratulations on the new aircraft Jon. Looks great. Hope you have a lot of new and exciting adventures.
Congratulations....must be an amazing feeling buying your first plane
So exciting Jon with the new wings! Can't wait to see where you head off to! Both IV and OR are now painted on the Just Flight Warrior and Turbo so we can follow you along in Microsoft Flightsim! Looking forward to replicating your journeys! Looking forward to the future videos with the new wings.
Congrats on the new wings, Jon. I had the pleasure of regularly flying a Turbo Arrow 3 some years ago and its a delightful long legged, yet efficient tourer.
You'll have many hours of fun flying India Victor and I look forward to seeing your adventures.
Very enjoyable and interesting report. Would be nice to hear a little more about engine and power management compared to the old aircraft.
I did my solo QXC to Kemble a month or so ago and it is certainly a busy airfield. Always better to go around and give it another try- never any shame in it! Like the video 👍🏻
Congratulations! Looks like a lovely aircraft, hope you're enjoying it!
New wings! Cool!
Hey! Congratulations on the new wings. As always fascinating viewing even for an ( enthusiastic) non-pilot!
Thanks David. Glad you liked the video.
Now you've got all that awesome extra power, you won't notice me as a permanent passenger in the back, Jon! She sure is one gorgeous bird.
You'll have to throw all my junk out first.
Congratulations mr flying reporter! I have the same plane ! I like this aircraft, confortable and interesting to fly ! (With propeller and retractable gear) and perfect for IFR.
Congratulations on the new flying machine
Splendid video, Jon, great variety. Looking forward to viewing your adventures 👌👏👏
Thanks Kevin.
Congrats. Looks pretty and clean from inside.
She's a beauty Jon - A turbo as well!! :)
Yup!
Congrats on your new bird. Looking forward to seeing some new vids of your adventures
Huge congratulations on the new whip, awesome mate 😃
Many congrats Jon and hope you have countless happy hours of flying
Thanks Carl.
Lovely new ride! Sorry to hear you’ve had your worries. I was furloughed for full 18 months so hardly been able to get up. Here’s to 2022! Fly safe.
It's got to get better, surely.
Enjoy your new toy! 😀
Anothe good video Jon, love your videos nothing is hidden from the viewers to show no one is always perfect and make mistakes
Thanks for watching.
Excellent video Jon👏and congratulations on the new plane 👍
Great to see you have a new plane Jon and to see you go to Kemble which is where my son flies from. Looking forward to seeing your future videos.
Thank you.
Many Congratulations! Looking forward to watching your adventures. On reflection of the past 20 months, onwards and upwards! :-)
Thanks James.
Thanks for all your great videos.
Would be great to hear more about the purchasing and ownership costs, along with the costs of shared ownership (I assume you had before).
Glad all is good post Sandown too. Fly Safe.
Congratulations Jon!
What a lovely aircraft and even better now that you're the owner!
Another brilliant video, can't wait to see what's coming in the future
Thanks pal.
Another good one, Jon.
Nice aeroplane and I'm sure you will soon get used to it, with your methodical approach to things.
Must visit Kemble some time.
Well done on the new aircraft Jon. It’s a nice feeling isn’t it? Lots to get used to in a busy circuit. Video was very good and voice over honest. 👍
My old CFI Bill Brooks always taught that the only unusable section of runway was the bit behind you.....
I looked through CAP637 specifically Chapter 2 Figure 2.1 (d & e) and like many things this is ambiguous.
Pooleys EGBT states:
"Turning area for Rwy 27 is part of the active runway and must not be used as a hold"
The area of taxiway in question is between the turning area and the threshold, hence part of the active.
I see no basis for the assumption that you shouldn't use it
Well done Jon what a great aircraft and nice to see you going into my home airfield Kemble. You have given me given me the incentive to try our club RG with an instructor. Would love to know the budget for this type of aircraft but will not ask. Looking forward to your further adventures and videos. 👍
It's great fun. Let me know how you get on. If you look at the brokerage sites, you'll get some ballparks.
Very nice aeroplane, congratulations, you lucky chap! Thanks for sharing.
"Thurweston Tower, the cheque is in the post" 🤔🤔😆😆😆
Kemble can get incredibly busy at times, great practice. Without an alert system? According to my buddy? You have to have eyes in your ars@! as well as the back of your head😉😉 I've also got the feeling that the go around is dead side above the grass, but I'm not sure how that works , in practice, if something is taking off from the grass too🤔🤔🤔
Looking forward to Popham and the approach around the petrol station etc👍😊👍
Thanks for watching.
Congrats Jon-super wings! U won’t be huffing and puffing in the climbs with the TC engine 😂😂😂. One thing that Piper TC POH omits (despite FAA protestations) is that should an engine start running rough or quits when flying at higher altitudes it may be due to a failed TC -in such a situation the engine is being choked by the excess fuel rate relative to the rarified atmosphere. Hence, the pilot should try LEANING the mixture to correct. Currently the POH for TC models specifies full rich (as one would do with a normally aspirated engine) but that would only exacerbate the situation should the cause be a TC failure.
Thanks. The POH procedure for suspected turbo failure does spell that out, and it is in the emergency checklist...hoping to never have to face that problem though.
Congratulations Jon.
Congrats on the huge step up to aircraft ownership. Looking forward to many videos covering this aspect. Since taking ownership have you changed you mind many times on short term/longterm mods you would like to make. May all your takeoffs be followed by landings! 3 greens!
Thanks Mikey. We have some projects in mind...Watch this space.
Hello Jon, great video as always and nice new aircraft, congratulations.
Not quite sure but from the cockpit footage I didn't see if an engine data monitor is fitted? These are one of the best value after market upgrades you can put on a piston engine aircraft, particularly a complex single or twin. To be able to accurately monitor individual Exhaust Gas Temperatures, and more importantly Cylinder Head Temperatures, is really important. Not to mention other engine parameters such as Turbo Inlet Temperature, oil, fuel, OAT, electrics etc is a real advantage, in comparison to the little single (historically inaccurate) gauges that Piper, Cessna and co give us. For the outlay in cost of something like the JPI Engine Data Monitor 800 or 900 series, you have the ability to save thousands of pounds in keeping track of your engine's health.
It also allows accurate leaning, whether you choose to operate rich or lean of peak. You can pre-programme alarms to trigger at certain temperature or manifold pressure limits, helping you keep cylinder head temperatures and that turbo boost under control. Should you wish, you can plug in a USB and download the data for each and every one of your flights. Then with easily accessible online software you can assess how healthy your engine is, and importantly how you are operating it.
If you don't follow him already, check out Mike Busch and Savvy Aviation (TH-cam and Podcasts). He offers a really enlightening view of how we treat, and how we should treat our light aircraft. As a fellow owner with limited knowledge on these matters, I find his content really helpful.
Best wishes for lots of fun trips and adventures....! 🙂
Just realised... this is the aircraft that crashed into yours at Sandown last year!!
I wish I had one of those! Congrats :) Did Turweston to Kemble a few weeks ago, kids impressed by the 747... Looking forward to the upcoming content :)
Thanks Peter.
I'm sure i'd be releasing more videos faster if I didn't lose so much time watching your videos Jon! Congratulations again on your first plane. As you say, a dream come true. Reliving the feeling I got when I picked up my 182 and flew it home. Good call on the go around. Looking forward to your new adventures and hope to bump into you 'IRL' one day! Charlie
Cheers Charlie.
Nice one Jon. Welcome to the wonderful, scary world of aeroplane ownership. Interested to hear you guys use QFE over there. Cheers, Jim.
Enjoy the new aircraft John. Good luck at Popham I had a few problems there in the early days.
Thanks.!
Wait, wasn't this the aircraft that clipped your wing at Sandown?
Congratulations on the new wings. :)
I noticed that too!
Nice. Looking forward to seeing IV when I am next at Redhill. (My son is learning there).
Keep a lookout.
I think it's peace of mind owning alone. I know syndicates can work. But a lot of trust goes into them. This way you always know what's going on the plane and how it was last flight.
Another great one to distract me from everything else I should be doing! My flight into Redhill was, as expected, extremely challenging being a student but I learnt a lot and had a lot of fun. Let's hope for anything other than 36 next time!
Remember, it's your instructor's job to make it all make sense. Runway 36 is difficult, even for a seasoned private pilot.
@@TheFlyingReporter They were there primarily to keep us safe - we thoroughly briefed it and I really enjoy the challenge. I flew much tighter than needed, probably giving about a 0.1 mile final instead of the ideal 0.3 or so. I completely forgot before landing checks (instructor did them in his head to make sure all was safe), and I landed with flap 20, instead of 30 as planned. Not ideal in GNWFT, which is notorious for its love of floating. The way I see it, you can plan all you want, but there's no better way to combat that loss of situational awareness than actually experiencing and debriefing it!
Nice aircraft. Congratulations!
Thank you.
Awesome plane, congrats!
Thanks.
Congrats on the new aircraft. Hope you didn't have to wait for ages to order/get food (my experience recently at Kemble). Interestingly I too had to go around in almost identical circumstances - There appeared to be pilots flying ENORMOUS circuits (they never would have made the field in the event of an engine failure), but no harm no foul. ATC there is great and it's a nice place to visit. Looking forward to your visit to Popham.
It's busy there at Kemble. we didn't have to wait too long for food. The aircraft ahead was previously doing circuits, so I was a little tighter than normal. On final, declared they were landing, so the spacing wasn't adequate.
Nice plane. Enjoy. The plane in my profile picture is an Arrow. Not mine, alas... 🙁
When I bought my plane the biggest adjustment was being able to go to the airport and fly any time I wanted.
Yes, that does take a little getting used to!
Is India victor the aircraft that struck Oscar Romeo at Sandown? Is that how you first saw the aeroplane??
Congratulations!!
Thank you!!
How exciting to have a new aeroplane!
I have no experience with turbos but presumably it must feel very odd not to be able to give it full power on takeoff or go around.
Perhaps this is to do with the lack of a ‘waste gate’ on older turbo machines (?) to prevent them over boosting.
Thanks David. You get used to it. Yes, you can overboost it if you apply full throttle. It has a fixed wastegate. Typically, 2/3rds throttle is about what you need.
Congrats on your airplane, if you are ever in Switzerland give me a call, we fly also a Piper Turbo Arrow 3, lovely airplane!
Thanks. I may be in touch to compare notes!
I love Popham!
Congrats.
Thank you.
