  • It's time to work on the cardboard castle again! In this video I'm making a miniature throne using egg carton bricks. That's right, the egg carton bricks are never leaving! It feels like I've used SO many cartons for this project, and I still have more to do with them!

I like the curved back. I can imagine the mason working with a stone that is broken off but otherwise perfect . Well done!

Thank you! And that's actually super clever thinking. Using whatever was leftover from another part of the castle. I'll have to use that! :)

Oh I love it! It's very unique and the asymmetry adds interest!
One way that might help the throne stand out a bit more (depending on how you are imagining the final piece) maybe take some gold and add some gilding along the edges, it can look old and scuffed, but it might add just a bit of a sparkle to help it stand out from the background. Perhaps a kind of 'medallion' detail on the back, either in the same stone or in gold or jewels? And a worn cushion for the seat. Any of these might draw the eye a bit more than the plain stone. But even if you leave it as-is I really like it! A ruined castle doesn't need to look any particular way, and a seemingly diminutive throne can just be another layer illustrating that ruin.

Ohhh I think some light gilding might look amazing! I'll have to try that out. I also considered doing the worn cushion. I think if you also thought of that it's worth at least trying out haha. I also have a "crown" I plan on placing on the throne at the very end that I think might draw the eye that way!

I really like the asymmetrical design of the throne! It makes me wonder about the region where the castle resides and what the shapes means to the country or people there. When I have a warping ceiling like the one you are dealing with, I use a wooden dowl across the front ceiling edge and that will usually force it back into shape. I think your ceiling height is what is throwing off your eye for scale... 1:24 is so tricky that way! If you were able to hang some chandelier pieces or bits of fabric from the ceiling it might fill that space a bit more. It leaves your sense of grandeur in the room with the high ceilings but will bring the viewers eye down to the furniture that is lower to the floor. I hope that makes sense. Feel free to ignore everything I said because I think its awesome as is, I just wanted to share some thoughts based off the concerns you mentioned at the end. I am excited to see your plans for this room in the future!!

Thank you so much! I was hoping the asymmetrical design would tell more of a story than a traditional throne. Ohhhh the wooden dowel trick is super smart! I plan on "attaching" the room to something in the future, so I may put the dowel in place to held hold it while it glues/adheres to the final piece. And I totally think you're right about the height of the room. Hopefully the chandeliers I'm making tie the space all back together and make it look more 1/24. This is actually the first time I've ever worked in this scale! haha

New tat?? Very colorful!! Your castle is really coming along, and I think the throne looks perfect! I like how it matches the stone walls, and then the awesome stained glass windows are the focal point. ❤

I've actually had the tattoo for a while! I just don't think it was ever angled on camera haha. Also, thank you! I think I'm coming close to the end of the project, which makes me sad, but I'm also excited to get started on a new project!
