As a South African, the reasons are simple 1. It's way over priced for the average consumer 2. The weather is to hot to justify buying coffee 90% of the time. As for the remaining 10% look at reason number 1
SA has the highest rate wine in the world (To give an indication on how elite we are). Need to do more research cause woolworths and other sa coffee is premium. While starbucks is fake low end stuff for higher price. We have a more elite taste buds than americans would ever imagine. Often americans refer to their coffee as mud but no one in SA says that about our own local.
I'm Australian and can't remember the last time I went to a Starbucks. I generally order coffee at a cake shop. "Hanging out" at a Starbucks seems weird to me.
Wow...I always watch these videos but I never thought they would reach my hometown As for why starbucks is failing...I think it's because a lot of South African's have a culture of homemade food. We don't buy from franchises a lot cause we like to cook meals (also cooking is cheaper and allows families to gather). So we don't have this need of buying on the go. We make our own breakfast and lunch and carry to school or work so ofcourse if most of us don't even but McDonalds 3 times a week...why would we buy coffee everyday (especially expensive coffe that is the equivalent of bread and 18 eggs which you can just buy instead)
@@laneyfisher2541no... it is just not worth it. I don't like their coffee, for one thing. Most of the time the youth here would rather spend their money on parties and chill sessions , not coffee.

1. Too expensive 2. Similar coffee brands have already entered the market 3. Big stores(real estate costs) in bad locations such as malls (instead of drive thru or gas stations ~ big car culture in South Africa).
Well as a South African..... Starbucks is on the expensive side. And i mean its not even that great. We have better alternatives to Starbucks And Dominos tastes terrible compared to what we are used too
Its Duane Again Agreed. I think we have some of the best tasting food in the world, where else can you get braai, bunnies, Indian food, Turkish food and pizza and more in one road?
Same problem as Dunkin Donuts in South Africa which has just pulled out of the country. On the other hand Krispy Kreme is really making its mark in South Africa, setting more modest targets and having consumer friendly prices. Domino's is just plain terrible pizza.
Maxwell Sokhela Cape Townians do like junk food lol. It’s just that Dunkin’ Donuts was more of a novelty thing you try once just because it’s big in the US. And don’t think there is really a big market for doughnut stores here anyway
I think they need to open stores in more globalised places like in Cape Town and around colleges that receive a lot of international students like Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth!
Strangely enough, having tried Starbucks overseas, I was excited to go to one here in Durban. The only thing is, once I did it, that was it. My experience was done. Been there - done that - type of thing. I think it boils down to what was said earlier in the video about already well established coffee chains in SA and an already well performing coffee culture that didn't need Starbucks. Private Coffee Roasting companies and coffee farms are doing very well in places where Starbucks is not even thinking about opening up stores yet. The economy and middle to upper class numbers and finances will have to improve though if Starbucks wants a larger footprint in SA.
As a South African and lover of coffee, I can say that Vida coffee kicks Starbucks' ass. Seattle Coffee is also WAY better and worth the money. We'll keep Krispy Kreme and McDonald's though =)

@BeGood 2Me Being that 70% of the country's middle class is black it seems you are the one that doesn't like reality.
Blacks are the general target market for most South African goods.
Because in South Africa we have taste.
The only pizza we recognize is debonairs
And we dont buy coffee, we make it
Debonairs is terrible though... We drink chicory though
And Romans😌
@@SugaryBob of course! 😊😊😊
@@othnielmurray6034 Nope..not to most South Africans
South Africans are starting to move more towards wood fired pizza. Personally I think debonairs is trash.
Domino's biggest mistake was taking Scooters pizza away
FACTSSSS
At least they didn't take Butlers.
Scooters Pizza was totally crap..awful overprocessed cheap ingredients which lead to half their branches closing down before they decided to change to Dominos
Same thing is happening to subway and burger King. They entered the market too late in South Africa. We've already got established brands that offer as good or better products and services.
Oh, don't get me started on Subway.
People prefer mac Donald's over burger king.
same as Dunkin’ Donuts, but Burger King isnt really failing here
There’s a Subway in SA😀. Subway is delicious. But probably too expensive, relatively, in Rand terms.
Damn I didnt even know we had subway😂
Starbucks failed in Africa for the same reason you can’t find $6 avocado toast everywhere in Africa!
Avos are ridiculously cheap in South Africa compared to the US and Europe. It isn't uncommon for people to have Avo trees in their garden.
Mergan Naidoo I agree but nobody will be $6 for an avo toast because why?
Sami B because it’s too expensive for the people living in South Africa?
Where I am from avocados for for $ 0.1- $0.2
That's 2900% jump in price
@@MerganNaidoo I got an avo tree so it's free
Its just not worth it , as a South African we have other options like Mugg & Bean and Gloria Jean which tastes as good if not better for less
And wild bean cafe
Vida too. Its litterally like our version of Stsrbucks
Wait Ive never heard of Gloria Jean. Where is that
@CFox Yeah Im CPT
Seattle coffee co. Too
You know it’s bad when you’re struggling in the most western-esque African country
Durban South African here, wayy too expensive and overrated and the local coffee shops have better and more affordable coffee
Because Southafricans are clever and dont buy overpriced cups of cofee on cofee shops like Starbucks😆
Same I'm north African and my people like you buy overpriced cups of coffee ☕ or anything isn't worth
1starbucks coffee is the equivalent of a large Bic Mac meal, its really just not worth it for us
People rather spend that much money on food then 1 small coffee...
I'm South African, and I won't lie I really don't care about Starbucks, like when it first came the hype was there, but after I bought from them I didn't even like the taste
It's overhyped amd expensive for no reason
Starbucks is the best coffee
@@abeprod68gaming11 Rose tinted glasses covering your eyes much?

In Brazil, both starbucks and Dominos, are expansive and not so tasteful. They are like a status place. Dominos pizza is so dry 🤮🤮🤮
Same in south Africa 😂
Same in South Africa. We have better tasting Pizza Joints that deliver and better tasting Coffee shops that sell better prepared and tasty coffee than Domino's or Starbucks.
Facts
I live how they show cape town whe they speak about Starbucks in South Africa, but cape Town doesn't have one.
Right!! ???? 🙄
Wow really? And Durban has 2 which is weird.
😂😂True....iv been looking for that overpriced place!
I think they're too scared if the competition.. Cape Town has awesome coffee!!
@@estellereddy7135 which is Great
Africans just don't drink coffee like that
Lol. You think
Ahh actually...
@Maya ko walsh kiki 🤣🤣🤣🤣true
That’s not true, we like great coffee not sub par coffee
I’m South African. 60% of the population live on less than $5 a day.
We also have so many local coffee shops that sell cheaper, better coffee.
The brand is overpriced for a country with such a high poverty rate & our economy isn’t doing well
Novelty can only last so long, need to conduct proper market research which seemed to have missed the mark on price point versus local coffee shops
I predict most of the SA Starbucks was from foreign tourists and curious locals
And South Africans would rather drink beer than coffee
Why would I go to Starbucks if I could go to Seattle Coffee which is way better?
Got Starbucks once in Melrose Arch, was so underwhelmed
Im gonna save you all 11 Minutes
*its overpriced*
Let's keep supporting our local businesses y'all. #ProudlySA
Send us more KFC’s and less Starbuck’s 😂
kwagga capetown KFC is killing our people tho. See how far our kids are nowadays
KFC is crap we need more nandos and chicken lickens
KFC has disgusting coffee
kwagga capetown Starbucks has far more vegan stuff aka actual food!
Muyiwa Amuwo and the animals and environment
Plus i have hardly seen a starbucks commercial in South Africa

@@gina3498 I think I saw one by fishaways. I could be wrong
As a South African, the reasons are simple
1. It's way over priced for the average consumer
2. The weather is to hot to justify buying coffee 90% of the time. As for the remaining 10% look at reason number 1
But Starbucks also selling ice coffee ?
@@saintlouis1989 weather isn't the problem they're doing great in Saudi Arabia and that's a literal desert

Lol same
Same😂
Who is buying Starbucks and Domino's in South Africa? I live in N.Y and I don't buy either of these products.
Not many, hence they are struggling...
Wow...I always watch these videos but I never thought they would reach my hometown
As for why starbucks is failing...I think it's because a lot of South African's have a culture of homemade food.
Why pay R60 for a Latte when you can get the same drink at a McCafé + A blue berry muffin for R54,99...Ska ba Dom 😂😂
@@mo9650 😂😂bruh a whole R60 for 1 cup
I'd rather buy a small can of Frisco or Ricoffee and have about 50 cups of coffee for a month
Logic!
They’re too smart to pay 5 bucks for a cup of coffee!

Every CNBC video: Why (big USA company) is (succeeding/failing) in (non USA country).
ExDee McGee and the answer is always the same: Americans think that the rest of the world is just a copy of their culture...
Yep 👏👏👏👏
Americans have weird culture the weirdest thing for me is their portions of food ?
1. Too expensive
2. Similar coffee brands have already entered the market
3. Big stores(real estate costs) in bad locations such as malls (instead of drive thru or gas stations ~ big car culture in South Africa).
StarBucks failed to know whom their target market is in South Africa, we drink alcohol more than coffee!
This is exciting, can you please do more episodes on South Africa like:
Mac Donald’s
KFC
Woolworths
And other African brands
Accidental Zulu your name though😂😂😂😂
South African here: Starbucks sucks. We have better chains with cheaper and better coffee.
The lack of parking on Florida Road puts me off going to Starbucks.
For real!!!!!!!!!
We've got Vide e Caffe, Bootleggers, Seattle Coffee and many more independent coffee shops.
Well as a South African..... Starbucks is on the expensive side. And i mean its not even that great. We have better alternatives to Starbucks
And Dominos tastes terrible compared to what we are used too
Its Duane Again Agreed. I think we have some of the best tasting food in the world, where else can you get braai, bunnies, Indian food, Turkish food and pizza and more in one road?
And what throws me off about Domino's Pizza is the thick ass crust like I want to taste everything and not be over powered by the crust
Same problem as Dunkin Donuts in South Africa which has just pulled out of the country.
On the other hand Krispy Kreme is really making its mark in South Africa, setting more modest targets and having consumer friendly prices.
Domino's is just plain terrible pizza.
I didn't even know we have Starbucks in South Africa.
They’re also opening them in the wrong places. Cape Town is where it’s at, put them in wealthy shopping centres and suburbs.
Exactly. Its in Cape Town where people sit around drinking coffee
Maxwell Sokhela Cape Townians do like junk food lol. It’s just that Dunkin’ Donuts was more of a novelty thing you try once just because it’s big in the US. And don’t think there is really a big market for doughnut stores here anyway
@@Clark_Kent_ZA I think it's more than South Africans just aren't that crazy about Doughnuts as they are in the US.
Driving culture is so real. I’d rather go to a drive through than leave my car for a mall
Coffee for South Africa: we make it.
Pizza for South Africa: Panarottis or Debonair.
We go there for the WiFi ♥️♥️😂
South African here, we also have Krispy Kreme here, and is way more reasonably priced..👌🏻
We still don't need it though. We have our own local pastry shops.
We drink cofee at home, too over priced
As a South African and lover of coffee, I can say that Vida coffee kicks Starbucks' ass. Seattle Coffee is also WAY better and worth the money. We'll keep Krispy Kreme and McDonald's though =)
THEY JUST NEED TO DROP THE PRICE TO R10-R30 AND THE BUSINESS WOULD BE BOOMING
Our pizza is simply way better than Domino's.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza
And Steers is so much better than Burger King. I'll die on this hill. When I was in New Zealand I would have killed for a King Steer burger, and Burger King food just made me depressed.
Support local owned coffee shops.
1 statement: $5 coffee
No one waited overnight that's a lie no one in SA would wait overnight for coffee, only thing we would is alcohol after lockdown
You forgot Mugg and Bean which is the one largest direct competitor in terms of target market similarities. Besides that, South Africa have large elaborate well established coffee shops that produce the best cuppa world over.
