Every time alcohol comes up in a sci-fi story, I imagine a funny scenario where one critter is insisting on day-drinking, and others disapprove, not realizing that her species _requires_ ethanol to function.
Reminds me of autistic humans with touch aversion. The sensation of touch can be extremely overwhelming, not painful, but aversive due to the sensation itself. They can still want hugs and other forms of social contact but they have to be the one who initiates to prevent an overeaction.
and if we ever meet 'space spider civ' i do hoppe they are far lees 'hard wired' then the species in this story ,that seems to be far closer to gaia skittering ones in that , hardwired behaviour such as 'mated = male now food' or 'touch = potential food or potential danger'
I'm autistic with touch aversion and honestly being touched is less an attack and more a way to directly trip the silent alarm in my head. Just being close enough to brush shoulders with others or randomly bump legs is enough to force me into being hyper aware of my surroundings and posture to the point it genuinely overwhelms my ability to function. It doesn't hurt or even feel uncomfortable it just feels wrong, like as if every time it happens it's the equivalent of being gently touched on the back at home, when you thought you were alone. No it's not painful nor actually enough to trigger a defense mechanism bc it clearly isn't an attack but every neuron in my mind now only has one question: WHAT THE FUCKKKKKKOKKK
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” ~ Frank Herbert, 'Dune'
This kinda reminds me of another of your stories, where there were arachnid aliens, that other aliens thought humans were scared of, since they were always giving them good deals, and were later controlled by other aliens to wage war against the humans. Kinda wish i remember the title of it, since i'd like to listen to it again.

So the future enforces unwelcome touching? Sorry but being touch averse is completely fine. Im not but I can respect many people I know who are. This is just forcing an opinion imo. Sounds dystopian.
There's a difference between being touch averse (which is fine) and having a borderline panic attack when you see two people shake hands (which is what the spider had)
@@Jet-ij9zc sure but to force touch in either case is assinine. You can expose someone to triggers to overcome it without hitting them with a nuke. This was simply pushing a point of view. @@talyn3932 no, it's like a person with arachnophobia desensitizing themselves by holding a spider in a situation where they feel safe enough to challenge their boundaries. @@malinbergvall no way. You are a diplomat. That means MUTUAL respect for boundaries. Imposing one custom or beleif over another does not in any way shape or form build bridges. Really that simple. No violation of personal space and boundaries needed.

Touch is an attack, can be hard to unlearn.
Sheldon Cooper from big bang theory is a good example of touch aversion, he slowly develops over the show and becomes more willing of contact

Steve Irwin is looking at this story from Heaven and smiling, Ms Frizzle is applauding.
the human/arachnid alliance will be AWESOME.
Yeah, once I let it out from under the pint glass...
Now do a sequel from the point of view of the teacher. Who has arachnophobia and is getting over her fears by helping the student get over hers....🤔

It's called aracnids or something like that. The name is obvious once you see it
I'm drawing a blank too but I'm pretty sure the Aliens were called Driss or something.
I feel theresa is or could be a kindergarten teacher. The gentle hugs ring true.
Great narrative. Good job.

Second, I didn't have to, but I enjoyed the process
Giant spiders hmm
Humans in her position..should really fight the urge to develop anthropomorphic traits to their students.
They are students ..not pets .
So seeing sapient aliens as more human is a bad thing? If anything, seeing sapients as humanlike makes more sense than seeing pets as humanlike.
"anthropomorphic"
Wrong word.
Nice
