Roy Batty maybe because people barely recognized what she was singing. the actual song is fantastic but the "version" kimbra did here is fucking hideous. that was the most horrible background effects i've heard in my life.
The crowd is "dead" for two reasons. One, it's a recording for Spotify sessions so they want everyone to be quiet. Two, this is clearly more of a performance art style show than a concert. Someone carefully constructing a sound environment and performing a song to it is enchanting. You should be paying attention to the performance rather than getting lost in it and dancing/singing along. Different settings, different expectations.
This clip never gets old. We export a lot of musical talent for such a small country but I reckon no one comes near Kimbra in terms of raw talent and an inherent fearlessness to fully explore and develop her craft.
Holy shit! If I had to listen to one single voice for the rest of my life, it would be hers. I mean, every single tone that comes out of this mouth makes my brain freeze, it's like I forget everything around me.
I love her version of this song and think she is extremely talented. I can't stop watching this video. (The pants are definitely a factor....but I do love the performance too.) As for crowd reaction, I see it like this: Most people are not really familiar with the process of looping. I loop live in layers like this and find that most crowds are just amazed by it. That is the reaction I see here. Watch it again with this in mind. You see the people struggling to get a look at what she is doing and smiling when they figure out it is all her. They are just amazed by the process. Not a dead audience. Just focused and in awe.My two cents.....for what it's worth.
I was thinking about that at the beginning of the song but as it was ending I began to wonder if many of them would have been dead inside like a lot of people were then talking about in the comments. I'd love some context of what humans are like because I have no idea
Devices: looper and vocal effects is the TC-Helicon Voicelive Touch. She is using the first one but there is also a VLT2 now. The mic attached to the looper is a TC-Helicon MP-75. The iPad app for the 'keys' sounds is called SoundPrism.
you guys should know that she is doing zillion things at the same time ad she is not even distracted damn is totally amazing and absolutely deserve better audience
It's been two years since i first saw this video, and it still impresses me how she can handle everything by herself (even with she saying she was scared >.< )
Honestly one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Kimbra is the start, stop, and finish to this song and she does not disappoint. This song sticks with you long after the performance.
***** Let's put it this way, let's say you're a performer doing a live concert. Which would you prefer *a crowd focusing more on your performance, rocking out* or *a crowd trying to capture the whole thing and don't want to move much because they don't want to watch a shaky video*? Also, I doubt they're going to watch their whole video afterwards.
InsertNameHere - I thought I was the only one who thought this. seriously 9/10 people NEVER re-watch concert footage. People will DEFINITELY not watch others footage because it usually looks like shit.
At the end she said "so scary doing this stuff by myself". I couldn't tell girl. You killed it. I used to listen to this song over and over back in the day and I had forgotten about it until I heard Somebody That I used To Know playing in a TH-cam short. Then I came to this video. I wish I could go back to when this song came out. Better times for sure. Kimbra is a dope artist and performer.
It's actually the first Voicelive Touch, the 2 hadn't come out yet/looks different. But it's a super fun looping station/voice modulator to play around with.
I remember watching this when it first came out when I was 12 & I was so amazed by her talent & how she was able to make a whole ass song with just her vocals. Anyways kimbra will always have a special place in my heart :D
The audience doesn't know how to feel nor react: They weren't ready for THIS. So used to Cookie Cutter b.s. everybody looking & sounding the same! This woman stood up there alone & basically was her own band. Her vocals, arrangement, her look, gestures, everything about her is refreshingly eccentric. She is an entire aesthetic. Lord bless her because I crave @#!% like this. Yes, this is the type of Genuine Art which garners Blank Stares & Apathy when you are used to only Ersatz Artists.
+Benn Leyland I would've demonstrably stomped on my own phone and my right-hand neighbour's phone to raise heads right there. Should this have happened in front of my parents and their Beatles-loving lot, they would know how to give it up.
This is my love story: I've been in love with those pants since I saw this video for the first time. A couple days ago, I bought them, I was so happy. I know we're gonna have a lot of fun together.
dude the hand thing helps her focus/channel her musical power. shes so amazing though. it makes me smile. never seen anyone make this kind of music like she does
The reason the crowd is silent is because it's Austin, Texas and the indie crowd there knows how to enjoy a show without ruining the ambience of a soulful song with a bunch of cheering. I think the crowd is great. if you watch really closely there are heads bobbing and expressions changing, and they pay respect by not cheering until the end. Also, the performance was freakin' great as always.
Edson Nascimento Jr. Actually, "have I spelled that right?" is more correct than "Did I spelled it right?" There should be an "is" in there, though. :)
they are Australians boy not Americans if were Americans they would rush security guard out take them out they would faint maybe even a criminal attack from some fanatic trying to kill her lol Americans
I believe that it's the TC Helicon Voicelive Touch ? It's mounted on her mic stand, and in addition to looping is providing the other fx, such as the reverb and the intentional "stair stepped" auto tune effect. Similar things can be done with the Boss RC 505 which is fun for beat boxers as well.
is it only me or does this crowed seem boring... I would have danced with her or on the sideline, I get people wanna video her performance but I feel like there needs to be a balance. I won't judge those characters but I'll take living my life over sharing it any day.
You seem unfamiliar with professionalism. They aren't a crowd. This wasn't a concert. They are there as part of the performance. They can cheer and applaud at the end but if they were making noise or knocking around during the recording they'd have been told to leave.
why is everyone complaining about the crowd? I would LOVE to go to a concert like this where I can actually just pay full attention to the artist without having to be annoyed by people around me talking, screaming or singing along.
Brilliant! Finally, a singer who has weirdness, coolness, trippy-ness, awesomeness, electronic voices, poppy vocals and rock vocals, and an awesome way of singing! =D
they watch intensly someone who transforms once the music starts - she is the music. They all wish they could enjoy doing something as much as she does - living the music. eventually they realise - this is special - and I am here - coooollll
I've watched a few of her live performances, and she never holds back! She gives her all, because she lets herself get lost in the music. She is an Arteur

No prerecorded sounds were used, She made them all with her voice, Then looped and effected them as she sang the lyrics. WOW!
I love how the Indian girl looks at the crowd like "how r u not diggin this??"
SubwayRatt how's living under that bridge treatin ya?

I, and many others, disagree.
that shot was amazing. I wonder how camera person knew to adjust the focus to the girl at that moment

This is my favorite version. Every time I hear her sing this song, she seems to change it a little.
This one is the best, in my opinion.
I've watched this a million times. I want to be brave enough to do this.
she's not altering her voice, she's just being her own band. it's actually pretty awesome.
Best female artist in the business. Hands down.
