  • This 1978 Plymouth promotional film, titled " Plymouth Trail Duster For 1978 ", was sent to Plymouth car dealerships to be used as an in-house Sales personal training film. Sales Personnel were to show the film to potential buyers prior to the test drive. The film highlights technical aspects and features of the new model year.
This film came from my personal collection. This film was not downloaded from any website and is not reused content. This restoration is my work. The restoration process started with removing the super8 film from the Kodak Model B Movie Film Cartridge. The film came printed on magnetic sound Eastman film stock. After removal the film was cleaned, repaired, and spooled onto a standard film reel. Next the scanning to digital process was performed on the Lasergraphics Scanstation motion picture film scanner in 2k resolution. Excess film grain noise was removed and the images upscaled to 4k resolution utilizing Topaz AI software. Then extensive color correction was performed in Davinci Resolve. Finally, the film was downscaled back to 2k for uploading to TH-cam.

I grew up with my parents owning one ,then I purchased it from them, went on to owning 3 more
I never got stuck in them
    They were amazingly capable
Mpg ranged from 5 to 11 mpg
That hurt but they were really fun

How was it different from the Dodge Ramcharger?

Great video! These Traildusters were pretty rare compared to their Dodge Ramcharger sibling.
I had a fellow Mopar enthusiast friend ask what the point of these were, so i thought id share my response here:
Before the industry-wide consolidation of dealerships in the late 90s/00s, many small or average sized towns would either have a Dodge dealer or a Chrysler/Plymouth dealer, and if they did happen to have both, they were often separate dealers, owned independently of each other. Due to this, Chrysler felt the need to give C/P dealers their own versions of the RC and B series van, so they could truly offer a full line of vehicles. Back then people were less willing to drive 2 towns over to buy a vehicle, so these re-badging allowed C/P dealers to have truck options so they wouldnt lose sales to a neighboring Dodge dealer. Odd to think about nowadays, when most dealers carry 3, 4 or 5 different brands. Back in these days, there was more brand loyalty and competition between the brands of a parent corporation. This is why Plymouth/Dodge, Chevy/Pontiac/Olds/Buick and Ford/Mercury often repeated models between themselves, so areas with only one of those car lines could truly offer a full line of vehicles to choose from, as well as satisfy brand loyalists that would rather have a certain make over the other.

Gorgeous video quality! You can really see how glossy the fake wood on the dash was when it was new!

The only differences between the Ramcharger and Trail Duster were the badges and possibly the upholstery and grille patterns. The same badge engineering was applied to the Dodge passenger van to create the Plymouth Voyager.

I don’t even remember the Plymouth trail duster. I loved the idea of the factory installed CB AM/FM radio though. I’m sure I saw these things on the road but they just weren’t popular by any means. Ford had the bronco and Chevy had the blazer and it wasn’t much else in between.

It was only made until 1981. It was the sister SUV to the Dodge Ramcharger.

So cool… I want one. I liked everything except the full time four wheel drive. Don’t know why anybody thought that was a good idea, outside of military applications.

Now that's what I'm talking about, a promotional video to show some vehicle capabilities with some real off road clips. Great job on the restoration. After watching this I may now go check out a 78 Tail Duster that is for sale locally by me, cool looking trucks. I'm more a Chevy guy but love all old schools.

When I learned about the Plymouth Trail Duster I was surprised, even though it was obviously a re-branded Dodge Ramcharger. I, like most people, had only ever seen the Ramcharger, and I immediately thought of the two SUV models as the Mopar equivalent to the K5 Chevy Blazer & GMC Jimmy. Same vehicle with almost all the same parts but with different branding and trim options. What’s cool is that both names refer to two old school Mopar Muscle Cars from the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s. I knew the first generation Ramcharger, like the Trail Duster had that ice chest cooler in the center console. But let’s be honest everyone put beer in those things and drank beer while they drove along, needless to say the ‘70’s were a very different time. I would like to think that these models factored in to the drinking and driving regulations that are enforced today, at least in California. If I was alive in 1978 looking at a Trail Duster at a dealership I would be asking myself, “What does this model offer that the Dodge Ramcharger does not? Other than different trim options”. And since it’s a virtually forgotten model today, a good-condition Trail Duster would command a higher price than a comparable Ramcharger.
