I rented this classic after watching Siskel and Ebert back in the 80s, loved it , I got it right off the bat , fascinating following these great characters, thanks
Great analysis to one of my favorite movies! Eddie was obviously smitten with Ava, but I never picked up on Willie being attracted to her. I think he just realized she was a fun hang much later than we the audience did. And she made him realize he didn’t hate his Hungarian roots as much as he thought.
I really love the deadpan humor and themes of the movie. I think they are about America's desolation, identity, multiculturalism, social alienation, and escapism.
The first time I ever heard "I Put a Spell on You" by Screamin Jay Hawkins, was in this movie. From that point on I was hooked. I had to watch the rest of it. It may be a little slow paced for a lot of people, but for those with the patience, it is a wonderful character study, and was perfectly cast. I'm just surprised that none of John Lurie's music with the Lounge Lizards was not included.
When I saw Eszter Balint show up as Louis CK’s love interest on his show Louis, I recognized her instantly even though it had been years since I’d seen Stranger Than Paradise. What a talent.
Thank you for your analysis! This movie was hysterical and felt completely unique when it came out. I saw it with my left brain engineer-type boyfriend (he too loved it), at a major theater in LA when it came out. We quoted lines from it for weeks afterward.
One of my favourites! I recommended this film to a friend of mine who is not into movies at all and they loved it, it has appeal and is endlessly quotable. I think some would be scared to recommend it because of the pacing but it seems to get through to people. I always felt Only Lovers Left Alive was basically just a retelling of Stranger Than Paradise, only with vampires.
People call this America’s best deadpan comedy film. Have you ever seen “The Man Without A Past” from Finland? That’s another great deadpan comedy that I would love to see you do a video of.

I would call it quirky rather than funny. Esther was the best part of it by far. I'd like to see her in another movie.
What are the literary references in the movie?
It's my favorite jarmusch .
Jir Jamusch
Great analysis!! So happy to laugh with poor willie and his regected nacionality and sexuality
