    I admire your attitude kid. I wish I had a family as supportive as yours growing up. I learned everything out of spite instead of joy because of my cruel father. I hope you go far in life. Learn as much as you can, and don't be embarrassed to learn. Congrats on your boat project, and seeing it through to completion. Don't let the world lose its wonder in a few years when life starts testing your conviction.

    Taking nothing away from the ingenuity and determination that it took to pull this off, I predict this contraption will self-destruct within a relatively short period of time. But it will also serve as a good learning project. That said, you have what it takes to make great contributions to society. Congrats!

    I like what you did there. I did the same thing with my trashed Mercury motor. My father, who is in his upper 80s did the welding while I just came up with the design. Works really well, but I don't have enough time to enjoy it much as I would like. If you have imagination you can do practically anything. Hats off to ya !!!

    I did the same thing about 20 years ago ..the difference was I used a 7 horse Johnson lower unit which that model had a 1/2 inch square shaft so I simply dropped a 1/2 inch drive 5/8 socket on to of the shaft , plush I also used a 12 hp electric start /pull start Briggs off an old Murray riding mower this way I could have a charging system , for lights and trolling motor battery..as far as controls I just used an old Johnson control box with forward reverse and throttle..I made an adapter plate to fit between the engine and lower unit out of treated plywood I simply traced the lower unit bolt pattern on one piece of plywood , then did the same with the engine..I just center bored each piece with a holesaw the layered plywood in between until I had the right thickness ..well I made it as far as barrel testing ..and it ran very well ..at the time I owned a motorcycle salvage yard..and a customer had stopped in and asked if I was going to sell it ..I said no ..well I hadn't thought about it ..? I was just messing around with stuff from my junk pile ... So this guy says : I'll give you $500 bucks cash for that motor .. I told him I hadn't really tested it . I only ran it in a barrel ..he said the worst he could do was change the prop or have it repitched ...so I said why not ..? But it is as is .. otherwise I'm not selling it . He said that's fine and off he went .

    Carlos, I'm glad you got it up and running. But it seems to me that you did so odd things to solve problems you ran into. It looks like you had access to a small private machine shop, yet you fail to use it... First, On mating the engine to the lower unit. You should have used the lathe to make a simple coupler to connect both shafts together. locking it in place by drilling a hole in both shafts and either using roll pins or nut and bolts. 2nd. The engine mounting "brackets" you made out of pieces of scape wood will not last more then 1 or 2 trips... Again use your machine shop, go to your locate metal scape yard and buy some scape 1/8" plate steel and steel pipe. Use the plate and pipe (bolt guides) to build mounting brackets mating the engine to the lower unit. Third. Route the engine cut off cable to where it runs down the tilter arm, build a small backet to mount it close to your twist throttle on the tilter. So it only takes a flip of a finger to kill the motor. In stead of the 2 hand contrapion you build.
    If you design and build the motor mounts right, you should still be able to use the engine cover from the outboad. You will have to cut cooling vents (on all 4 sides) and port the exhaust out. But by doing this, it will help with quiting some of the sound and it looks like a stock outboad...
    All this could have been done for about the same amount of money that you spend on cable, wood, hinges .....

    • @consistentbass
      @consistentbass 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep. The fishing line was a failure waiting to happen very shortly. Nylon fishing line degrades with sunlight and wears down easily with minimal abrasion. Therefore it is unsuitable for this application. A small diameter stainless steel cable would have been more appropriate. You could even keep the fishing line theme using a coated wire leader used for saltwater fishing.

    Very creative, and looks like you had a blast. I did one with a smaller lower unit and generator out of a very old Ford that ran off a car battery. I was a kid, but it felt like I was going 100mph! Good times!

    The Little Piece your welding on for a shaft personally I would have sweat it on. Get one piece red hot get one piece cold and shrinking on. And then weld it. Just like their due to a train wheel tyre

    I loved that video!
    You are one smart dude!
    I will be trying to build one of these soon. I hope that I do as well as you.
    Thanks for the time that you put into your instructions. My only concern is the connection of the "blade" shaft to the propeller shaft. I don't have a machine shop.
    It was cool to see how happy your family was when your boat worked!
    Great Job!

      Thanks Amy! I'm glad to hear you will be building your own! First of all, the welding solution that I achieved in the machine shop is by no means the only way to attach the blade shaft to the propeller shaft. There are many other ways to do it! The most popular way I've come across (from other youtube videos of similar projects) is to drill a hole through both the blade shaft and the propeller shaft (the prop shaft will be inside of the hole of the blade shaft at this point), and then to insert a bolt to connect the two as a single rotating shaft.
      If you do decide to weld, however, you can simply seek a friend or neighbor that has equipment and experience. The owner of the machine shop I used was a friend of a friend, and he did the favor without even charging me! So there are many ways... just be careful: any welded or bolted piece can have weaknesses that may cause it to break when rotating quickly. So it is a good idea to wear eye protection and place a piece of plywood between the shaft connection and yourself when testing the motor. Good luck!

    The avacado tree had branches from different species of avacado trees grafted onto the root stock, that's the process and is used all the time in nurseries. You could have simply taken the impeller off the water pump or taken it out and removed the vanes. Great job and plan to do a similar project myself soon.

    • @hunterboehm7135
      @hunterboehm7135 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      why would a clutch be needed on an outboard motor?

  • @theaveragejoestinkeringand4407
    @theaveragejoestinkeringand4407 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds like that motor has an aluminum flywheel. Lot of push mowers use the blade as the fly wheel to smooth out the engines running. There’s a way you could put a weighted metal disk on the bottom of the engine it would help Smooth it out. If it has a cast-iron fly wheel you don’t have to worry about it though.
