The songs from The Witcher feel as though they were meant to be played on the hammered dulcimer. Composed by Marcin Przybyłowicz, "Kaer Morhen" is one of the very first songs I learned on this instrument, which was a steep learning curve as I had to retune some of my strings to get the A sharp and A natural notes. Perhaps this was not my brightest move as a beginner, but well... it smelled of lilac and gooseberries.
The Witcher 3 is my favorite video game, so brace yourselves, you are likely to hear many more songs from the game on this channel.
I wanted to take some time to thank some special people that helped me with this first video.

This game will never stop being the best. Almost everything is perfect. Even after 5 playthroughs, i still wanna play it again and again.
@Otame umm, I guess. I like medieval era games because it features sword combat, bow and arrow etc. but witcher just has amazing story telling and is immersive to the point I do not leave it till I have completed 70-80%. The music really moves you and geralt is one of the best characters ever made.

I cannot begin to fathom how difficult it would be to learn to play this instrument. However, the sound is simply beautiful and goes extremely well with the tin whistle. Good Job!

Well done, learning a song by ear! This type of tune is not so easy. The dulcimer is also a nice sounding instrument.

Je cherchais des covers des sons de The witcher, la miniature m'a étrangement parlé, j'avais vu juste du coup. C'est amusant, tu as effleuré mes pensées il y a quelques temps à l'écoute d'un des titres de sòlstafir. Quelle très jolie femme tu es devenue Juliette ! Tu semblais soucieuse ce jour là, mais le son ne s'en ressent pas, c'est juste ! Et je vois que tu l'as arrangé toi-même pour cet instrument, c'est très beau ! I don't have the space (yet) for a good or even comfortable setting ; I literally have to move furniture around when I want to record something. Vraiment très beau! Et très bien exécuté aussi, beaucoup de précision. Je ne savais pas qu'il y avait d'aussi belles musiques dans les jeux vidéos. En tout cas ça fait changement des hymnes qui sont souvent joués sur ces instruments. J'ai acheté le même modèle de dulcimer en décembre 2019, mais j'ai été quelques mois sans jouer. Je m'y remets tranquillement. Le son de ton enregistrement est vraiment épatant. Puis-je te demander comment tu t'y es prise? Ou du moins, quel équipement tu utilises? J'aimerais peut-être faire une petite vidéo dans le futur... Merci.
Merci à toi, je suis ravie que ça te plaise. C'est un instrument qui a beaucoup, beaucoup à offrir alors oui ce serait dommage de ne pas l'ouvrir à d'autres styles musicaux après tout! Encore plus si tu as le Chromatic comme moi, tu peux vraiment tout jouer à condition de réaccorder certaines cordes selon la gamme des morceaux. J'ai aussi eu mon dulcimer en décembre 2019 avec de gros mois off à cause du travail, débordé avec la COVID et m'y suis remise en me concentrant sur quelques pièces, dont celle-ci. J'ai un gros sourire en lisant que tu apprécies mon son, alors que je ne suis toujours pas satisfaite après avoir beaucoup expérimenté haha. J'utilise un gros système D, je n'ai même pas d'interface audio propre - j'utilise un H4N, ainsi qu'un AT2020 et un pickup (qui m'a coûtée 10 pièces sur Amazon) afin de récupérer un peu les basses, branchés sur le H4N, le tout directement dans Logic. Je mets aussi les micros sous l'instrument - sauf le pickup qui est aux deux tiers entre mon bass et treble bridge - proches des sound holes de notre modèle de dulcimer. Maintenant que j'ai testé le grand défi d'enregistrer cet instrument et comprends un peu plus ce dont j'ai besoin, je vais sans doute me prendre une vraie interface audio et deux condensers. Il y a ce défi de conserver les basses qui perdure, alors j'aimerais tester des ribbon mics aussi, mais ce n'est plus la même gamme de prix non plus. OUI tu devrais faire une vidéo et j'aurai très hâte de l'écouter - participons à ouvrir le dulcimer au monde et inversement :)

J'ai vu une vidéo de Joshua Messick qui plaçait 2 micro au dessus, mais ses sondholes sont sur le dessus. Je devrai faire des tests. J'ai déjà entendu quelque part qu'apprendre à s'enregistrer est comme apprendre un nouvel instrument... Je possède un Zoom Q2N que je n'ai jamais utilisé depuis l'achat il y a 3 ans...peut-être aussi que ça fera l'affaire. Parlant de réaccorder certaines cordes, j'ai commencé à adapter une pièce que j'aime bien, et ça fait 6 cordes que je réaccordes, haha! Je n'avais pas prévu ça au début, mais je suis trop avancé dans le processus pour arrêter. Le hic c'est que je ne peux pas vraiment commencer à sortir une autre pièce. D'un autre côté, je ne termine jamais mes projets, peut-être que ça va me motiver. Bon succès pour ta chaîne!

This sounds absolutely wonderful! I also play hammered dulcimer...have you written down your arrangement or what was the foundation of your arrangement? I searched for sheet music of the song but wasn't very lucky. Daniel
Hi Daniel! It's not easy to find arrangements for the dulcimer or music sheets that can be adapted easily. My looong arrangement process is far from being effective, but here is my way: I take inspiration from listening to acoustic guitar (fingerstyle preferred) versions and it helps me to find the notes on the dulcimer by ear. Then I arrange the notes that are possible on our instrument, because of the specific layout or the fact we just have two hands haha, so they are comfortable to play. I have not started to write down my arrangements yet, but I may do so in the future - I will let you know! Keep hammering :)

@@Daniel-xu7rb D minor. On your dulcimer, you'll want to retune all your B in Bb. First notes are: D+A, D, A, F+A, E+G, D, E+A, D. I really hope it makes sense haha, I am French and was taught the notes as Do-ré-mi-fa-sol-la-si-do ;-) On this clip, the dulcimer is not filmed in the best way so you can't see the strings, but I will probably re-record a "dulcimer view" version of this tune so it's easier for HD players to find the notes. New videos will show several points of view. Let me know it this helped a bit!
@@LAGNAETTI Thank you so much for your support! I am German and as the layout of the German HDs is different to the rest, I play a Dusty Strings PD 40. It does not have a separated bass- and treble bridge but one large bridge in the middle. Its fully chromatic through all its 3,5 octaves from top to bottom so I will have every note I need. But... the PD 40 is hard to work with music where you have to seperate your hands, so actually I am thinking to buy a second HD if I have enough money in the future. My favorite is exactly the one you have. It sounds beautiful in your video so I am even more into Songbird now. Keep up your great work!

Thank you so much :). You don't need sheet to play the hammered dulcimer. Due to its very unique notes layout, it is actually very confusing to use sheets (for me). I have a classical music background so at first I tried to use sheets, but didn't work for me. It was easier for me to find some notes on my piano at first, then transcribe it to the dulcimer. Now with one year of practice, I go directly on to the dulcimer. It has become super instinctive and I regret not to have started this way from the very first day.
