In this video I show all the tools I use for most of the flies I tie. There are a few more fly tying tools that I use once in a while, but most of the flies I tie are using just the tools in this video.

I love all your flys. I’m starting to go after bigger fish and your patterns are my first choice. Big, simple, and effective! I tied up some versions of the Dedeaux snake and gonna try em on my brand new 8wt with sinking line..my confidence is High! I showed my retired friend your channel 2 days ago. He was a guide in central Texas for many years and he’s been tying up your flys and sending me pictures of them since. 😂 Thanks a lot Alvin, much appreciated! Best wishes! 🎣

Alvin, really enjoying your videos - reminds me of the old days when I would come into the Austin Angler on my long lunchbreaks from Austin High school, and you would show me how to tie different flies... You sold me my first flyrod, waders, vise, etc.., and told me where to go, which rivers,... It was so much fun hanging out with you, Joey, JT, old Joe Robinson - and I would spend as much time as I could just soaking in all the knowledge I could get from you guys. From one fellow fly-tier to another though, I think the best skill I've learned in a LONG time is whip-finishing by hand... Especially for those flies you mentioned that finish on the bend side rather than eye side of shank... But since I learned it I've never used a whip-finisher, even for tiny dry flies etc.

Thanks, Alvin! That was great. I like the advice on the vice especially. Thanks for taking the time for talking through all that.

As always, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and enjoy your quick & dirty Guide Fly tying demos. I remember the old saying that the fly bin flies are sometimes tied more so, to attract fly fisherman than fish. I started out on a hand me down Thompson Model A years ago from a good friend. My wife and I have been tying on rotaries now for the last 10 years or so, but I still enjoy bringing out the old Thompson from time to time and tying on it.

That about covers it , I started out 30 years ago with the Renzetti Traveler vice for mostly trout flies went through one set of Jaws still use it all the time . Purchased a Dyna King Excalibur 6 years ago moving into big hook big streamers nice vice . When people ask me what kind of vice should I get I tell them rotary, once you get used to using them they make tying easier. Have been a big Able fan love there reels but have only seen a few of there vices . Alvin tell everyone about the materials they will need :-)
    Thanks

Great info! Buy good gear once or cheap gear several times and end up spending more.

I use needle nose vise grips held by a big c clamp. Works great but no rotating. Lol. But I expect a brand new vice Christmas. I'm a cheap bastard.

Hey Alvin! Been using my Renzetti Traveler for years now and it’s great for most flies but I’m finding I need something beefier like yours for my saltwater and bigger bass bugs. Any suggestions?

Hey Gregg, my old buddy Leo made a recommendation in the comments. I haven't even looked at new vises in years.

I really like my Peak Rotary Vise - about $200 and it’s super solid. Made from high quality steel. The thing is bomber and I expect it will last as long as Alvin’s.
