What kind of people do great things with their life that ends up raising the bar of mankind, winners or losers?
It is pretty important to see who the winners are, and what the score is. The same attitude that wins in sports is the same attitude that got mankind out of the dirt in all aspects of our history. Cows in a pasture will eat about the same amount of grass though. Don't confuse them with the amazing brains of human beings. We used to share the same dinner table, so winning matters.

Because they are equally skilled with one of them edging out ahead by a hair's breadth
If either one of them makes a mistake, as long as the other one doesn't - the one who doesn't wins
But what if they had, whilst that malfunction was the determining factor as to why someone could make a mistake and still be ahead points wise
      That's why it matters
For these folks this is a classic case of "a game of inches", but if someone is a meter ahead because of a malfunction and technicality... then it's no longer fair
Sergio could've chosen to keep playing ahead because he wasn't responsible of the malfunction and have a comfy lead that would've been impossible to surpass
      He chose not to
Ahead or not, the match was over when the malfunction struck, and it was only made a match again - regardless of who was in the lead at the time - by Sergio
      That's why it matters

And it wouldn’t have been the wrong thing either if he scored another point following the malfunction. Bad things happen, that’s life. But the man made a choice to start again at an even playing field. What he did was show he holds the integrity of the match over simply winning. He showed he’s a person of honor and doesn’t need luck to get ahead. I think the ultimate test for him would have been if he was behind 10 points and this happened. If he took the shot it wouldn’t have given him the lead but he would have been tied. Would he have made the same choice? I would like to think he would, but I’m basing it off of less than 2 minutes of knowing about his existence.

For those who aren't archers, what he did was a pretty big deal because in compound archery, the bows are so accurate that they are aiming for a perfect score. As you can see, most of the time they are scoring 10, with an occasional 9, and the total scores are very close.
You basically win by being as close to perfect as possible, and hoping the opponent drops a few points over the course of the match.
A miss means zero points for that arrow. If Sergio had shot his arrow, most likely scoring 10 points, that would have given him an absolutely massive lead, and it would have been impossible for his opponent to win, as long as Sergio didn't make any big mistakes from that point on (very unlikely at this level).
Basically the match would have been ruined, the remaining arrows would have been a formality, and it wouldn't have been very interesting to watch for the crowd. He basically saved the whole match for everyone involved by his sporting decision.

A profound philosophy. When I was in high school, many decades ago, our basketball team won almost all of their games and we were the smallest high school in our division. I don't think we even had anyone over six feet. It was pure skill and drive. But our high school had a philosophy like your quote. Our cheerleaders were instructed to to do cheers for the losing team at the end of the game pointing out their skill and hard work. When we won the state championship our coach got up and just before he accepted the trophy on the team's behalf he made a five minute speech about how wonderful our opponents had played and he singled out several of their key players to praise and then talked about what an amazing thing to have beaten the best team in league history. We won the championship by one point. There was not a single moment where there was more than a four point difference in scores so it was a continuous nail biter. Then he insisted that our team be photographed together with their team and alternating players so that their team was in the newspaper as well as ours. Normally only the winning team would be in the paper. It was a wonderful life lesson for our school.

These people are trying there best to beat you, it all comes down to mili seconds or a foot here or there, most if not all of the competitors look and act genuinely happy for each other. Obviously everyone wants to win, but each of these people know more than anyone how hard it is to get to this exact moment and compete.
