  • This is our first viewing of Nightwish's first singer, Tarja, and the song "End of All Hope" was one that was recommended to us. This is a live version from the Summer Breeze Festival in 2002. Coach calls her vocals in this one "Hauntingly Beautiful".
Video used in this reaction: • Nightwish - End Of All...
This is a reaction video for the purposes of comment, criticism, and education about the song and artist. We believe these videos provide additional free exposure to new audiences for the artist and will drive additional views to the original video.

Tarja is a classically trained lyrical soprano. When with Nightwish she often preferred to sing as "dark soprano", but you would be surprised how bright her tone can be. Just listen to her take on Pie Jesu or Mein Herr Marquis to hear the difference. Also, from End of an era concert 2005, please react to Slaying the dreamer and Phantom of the opera. From her solo career, Supremacy from Woodstock 2016 and Marko`s new single Left on mars feat. Tarja. I would like to hear your thoughts about her version of O`Holy night, even though it`s not Christmas. Hauntingly beautiful. That`s Tarja.

Now you have a much clearer picture of the band's evolution over time, as well as their musical diversity. Although maybe this is not the song I would have chosen to fully show Tarja's talent, I think it is a representative song for that era of Nightwish. You will definitely return at some point, and listen to other gems of this first era, such as "Swanheart", "Walking In The Air" or "The Siren". Mrs. Coach noticed very well the melancholic element in Tarja's voice (I call it dark-gothic) that can be found in all her performances.

"Walking in the Air" might even be familiar to you ... and it's perfectly suited to Tarja's voice. I'm sure Floor could knock it out of the park if she wanted to (as "Shoemaker" demonstrates), but there's not a lot of room for improvement on that number.

@CoachCastTV you mentioned enjoying the dynamic of Floor and the band. You need to hear Tarja and Marko singing together. Siren is a great example, even more so is, Phantom of the Opera from End of an Era. It's Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite version of his song and Tarja with Marko is magical.
They recently reunited and finished a South American tour and will be touring Europe together. Marko released a solo single featuring Tarja called Left on Mars.
And yep Tarja has done a lot since NW. She's released 19 solo records and is the most successful female metal singer ever, financially speaking

Well, you have now done all three of the female singers from Nightwish. Time to take a look at Marko, the bassist/vocalist. I suggest that you look at the Pink Floyd tribute he and the band do of the song "High Hopes." Marko is an extremely talented vocalist and I think you will be very pleasantly surprised. Not to mention that the guitarist, Emppu, has a couple of wonderful solos.

      @Boa_Omega 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Tarja will be doing her "Christmas together" annual christmas tour through eastern Europe again this year. dates already being posted.
Her accent is from a very rural part of South East Finland and a tiny village called Kitee. or at least Tuomas and Emppu are. Tarja is from the outskirts of said village close to the Russian border.
There is a music video put together for this song with video from a school project film.
The live show was filmed as part of Summer breeze 2002 festival.
Marko also Finnish but from elsewhere only joined the band the previous year. He is about. 10 years their senior and had already established a career.
Now both Marko and Tarja have had formal classical training. The blend of their voices was magic for the 4 ish years they were in the band together.
You may have heard of the drama around her being forced out. But since that time things have improved relationship wise. cool but civil sums it up.
With the exception of Marko who reunited with Tarja at a nationally filmed TV concert in 2017 where they were able to mend fences and renew their friendship. They even did a rendition of Ave Maria together.
Earlier this Spring or Austral Autumn they toured together in South America, will do so again in Mexico where Tarja has just flown into yesterday or the day before.
And this Autumn they have dates in Europe.
Tarja really has gone on to be a global star in her own right, while staying humble and admired by all who know her.
She is nothing if not generous with her fans (I am one) who she calls her Winter Storm. Tarja's official fan club is called that as well after her 1st solo rock album of 2008. You can see on her social media she is not afraid to be silly and show you not just the glamorous side on stage but real life too.
A bit of backstory on Floor Jansen is back in 2002,when she was fronting a band called After Forever,Nightwish invited them to be their opening act during the summer as they toured Europe.
That is when they met and became friends.
That did not change (being friends) when Tarja left, and even 9 years later when the band offered Floor to take over for 2nd singer Anette Olzen (Swedish).
Floor did ask her friend Tarja for her blessings as a gesture of friendship and respect, to which it was given. That is Tarja for you. She was happy for her friend.
Even going so far in 2013 to introduce Ms. Floor Jansen as her good friend at the Female Voices of Metal Festival IX, in Belgium where they dueted on the Gary Moore cover of Over the Hills and far Away, a hit for NW in 2001 and still a crowd favourite .
Tarja calls for "no hate, only love" for Floor in Nightwish.
pure class. Yes that video is on site, but the audio mix that night was awful.
But you see the ladies jumping together and hugging on stage.
They have even done collabs over social media during lockdowns.
So ignore haters of anyone that pops off in comments sections. just know the two Queens love and respect each other.
Feel free to watch and love any era of the band and/or the solo work of its members past or present .
The band started in 1996 and has captivated audiences ever since.
They have been fortunate to find great talent over every incarnation of the band.
No one gets to demand you can only do one version or one era of the band.
Nor does praising one era or members constitute a dismissal on another.
Nor does saying one appeals to you over another.
I will state the classical technique Tarja uses learned in University in Germany called Lied (leed) singing ,a form of. chamber music singing from before the era of artificial sound amplification is a learned appreciation.
But on other tracks you see vibrato, ligatto techniques employed to full effect to enhance the performance demonstrated by Tarja. I have come to love it.
I encourage all to listen with an open mind. You may find yourself surprised on what it offers.

Classic Nightwish! That's an entire rabbit hole in itself. Tarja is absolutely amazing. "Haunting" is a very apt description. And yes, she has a solo career, and a new duet with Marko that just dropped a few weeks ago.

  • @Mischnikvideos
    @Mischnikvideos 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

You can't miss the Finnish accent in Tarja's older songs. Over the years it has gotten significantly better. Because she studied in Germany, she also understands German. Speaking doesn't work anymore because she's out of practice. And because she lived in Argentina for a long time and now lives in Spain she will speak Spanish fluently.
The haunting is typically operatic. The music was created when there were no microphones and the singers had to fill large halls with their voices and overcome the noise of the audience. They also sing correspondingly loudly.
Floor appeared as a savior at the last second and she grew up in metal. Tarja didn't want cigarette smoke in the room/bus and drinks tea to care for her voice. Floor smokes cigars and drinks whiskey. This means that Floor's standing in the group is completely different.
Old recordings also suffer from the technical possibilities of their time. The sound and the possibilities are more extensive today.

I love watching Americans' reactions to European metal. Thanks to youtube you can now easily compare US and European metal scene. But American metal scene has always been very conservative and closed for experiments and everything new. And in this video you listened to one of the brightest representatives of European metal scene. Nightwish made a kind of revolution in metal genre, combining it with classical vocals. And it was a breakthrough. Nightwish and Tarja had a huge influence and set an example for many vocalists and musicians in this genre.

Yes, Tarja is the most operatic of the 3 lead singers. She, Tuomas , and Emppu are the founding members from 1996. Coach is right, the band is from Finland, everyone on stage here is Finnish (Anette is Swedish, Floor is Dutch, and Troy is English).
Yes , they are young here, and Tuomas is still clean shaven.
This is a new song at this show, from the 2002 4th album, Century Child. The first album recorded with Marko(joined 2001), so yes that is him on stage. Jukka on drums is the same drummer at Wacken 2013.
Tarja recorded 5 albums with Nightwish, but was fired after the last show on the 5th album tour. She has gone on to a long and successful solo career. That last show in 2005 is the End of an Era DVD. From there try "The Siren" and " their cover of "Phantom of the Opera".
And recently, she joined Marko on a song called "Left on Mars"

Falling in love with Nightwish with Tarja, when Annette came in the picture I listened and went nope. Not to take away from Annette's talent, not suitable for Nightwish's sound when all you've heard was Tarja. So I kinda threw them to the curb ( not to sound mean ) for @ 3 years. One day I was listening to music on TH-cam and a suggestion came across my eyes, and it was Nightwish live at Waken 2013. Ghost Love Score. I saw that the lead singer was again different. I was like what the hell I can stop it if l don't like it. When Floor started singing I started crying. My wife was like why are you crying? All I said was my band has found a new singer and she sings like an angel. It started my love for this band all over again. I even saw them live in 2015 and they put on a hell of a show. I concert till this day I talk about. The Original Queen of Nightwish, all from Finland. Without Tarja there wouldn't have been a Nightwish nor doors open for others for those who know the history of this band. Tarja's voice is what made Tuomas change direction from Folk/Acoustic that he original was going towards, but when he asked Tarja to join the band and she sang they were shocked of how powerful and dramatic her voice is and that's how Nightwish was born, not to mention Tarja and Tuomas know each at 12 years old and same school and town, a lot of great history. You described it perfectly, hauntingly beautiful. Tarja is unique, and doesn't have that generic typical voice, and amazing live. All the popular songs everyone knows like *Ghost love Score* , *Ever Dream* and many more were written in Tarja's era, later these songs were reconstructed to fit other singers voices, not the original. Also, you don't get love songs now as it was back then, Tuomas had feelings for Tarja and that's how all those beautiful love songs were written, people can disagree but love can't be faked, from interviews, body language, documentaries, and many hints says enough. Tuomas said in an interview *Tarja is the best interpreter of my music and feelings* and that sums it up. That's my era when it was magical, mystical, beauty and class, nothing can even come close to what it used to be, a powerhouse. Thank you for reacting to Nightwish with Tarja, there are many treasure gem yet to discover, from official videos to live shows that you won't see now, an experience to remember. The chorus talks about losing one's childlike faith and the innocence that comes with it, and becoming someone who's filled with darkness and regret. They weren't meant to stay together but I think they were meant to start making music together when they did.... otherwise Nightwish would probably never have become Symphonic Metal bc Tuomas started with acoustic campfire music and then changed bc it didn't suit Tarja's voice and Tarja would have concentrated on classical music and never tried out singing rock and metal. I think everyone won in the end, despite the drama. The fans most of all ! 😊

Yay, another CoachCast reaction to Nightwish! I really like and appreciate your reactions. Yes, the style clearly varies depending on the singer, but the songs as a whole harmonize very well. Because Tuomas (keyboard and songwriter of almost all Nightwish songs) wrote the songs especially for Tarja and later especially for Anette. And then came Floor - she can sing anything, lives, expresses what she sings and seems incredibly empathetic to most people. I fell in love with Nightwish's music with Tarja. Anette never fascinated me that much but in her time Tuomas wrote some of the best songs and Floor... she is the best that could have happened to Nightwish and us listeners.

"End of All Hope" was resurrected onNightwish Decades-tour 2018 with Floor, who needed to adjust to it a liitle bit, to find her best version of performing the song. Drought-like conditions in July and a dusty, hot summer evening at the first weekend in August saw them performing at Wacken. That show was easily surpassed a fortnight later at Bloodstock festival by a far more confident Floor, before she fully embraced that song at the end of September in Buenos Aires (2018). All three live versions are available on TH-cam.
P.S. I was introduced to Nightwish in 2015, so Floor became and still remains my favorite singer of Nightwish 😋

Song itself is a little repetitive, which is understandable for any band's early work.
Maybe look at The Siren, one of the rare Emppu's songs (even if Tuomas had a say, of course). It showcases Tarja and the band the best.

Tarja have been working solo with her guys or with others, she is a busy woman. I look at it this way, like a tapestry is created by more than one person contributing an expression of themselves,so these 3 vocalists have woven their own threads and artistry into Tuomas'music...and Tuomas has the ability to compose songs that suit and enhance each singers' strengths and nuances.
Cannot wait for their new album ' Yesterwynde' coming out soon ! 🤗

  • @Songfugel

Tarja stayed very much in classical style during her Nightwish years, since they were doing that type of music more (power metal) and only at the end started to transition to more hard rocky metal (trash metal) style. Also her English ability was really limited back then, and the accent comes off very strong during her live performances
She can however sing in various styles and has improved her English as well, she just didn't do it that much in Nightwish.
She is classically trained and has a very rare dark voice quality, which makes her a very sought after classical vocalist, since even when she is at screaming high notes and power, it is still comfortable to listen to. Those with brighter voice can start sound annoying/disruptive if they keep singing those super high notes all the time with head voice
That is one reason I love early power metal Nightwish (first 3 albums), you get the super high notes of power metal, but with Tarja it still sounds warm and comfortable, and not the ear piercing notes power metal usually has
Apart from the live version of Phantom of the Opera with Marko, I personally prefer studio versions of Tarja's songs over her live versions. The biggest reason is her bad English in live concerts and the live budgets were super low during her era. Tuomas started to make the live shows proper shows later during Anette's era

I started listening to Nightwish during the Tarja era…I have enjoyed all three vocalists, but Floor is my favorite…she’s just more versatile than the other two. Plus, I actually was a fan of Floor’s way back when she was the singer for After Forever, before I’d heard of Nightwish. To me, she is the perfect singer for Nightwish, but that’s not to take anything away from the other two. Tarja has had a very successful solo career since leaving Nightwish, and just a month or so ago she and Marko released a song together.

Most challenging for Floor in the beginning was to learn most of the songs of her predecessors and make them sound good.
Btw. There's a (2 hour) documentary on TH-cam called *_"Please Learn The Setlist in 24 Hours"_* that tells you the story how Nightwish (Tuomas) contacted Floor and what she was asked to do.
    Link: th-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/w-d-xo.html

Floor to me was the perfect fit for Nightwish. Her ability to sing very different songs and to sound good no matter what, completely frees up Tuomas to just write it, and Floor will make it sound great. You’re right. Toumas had to go from a folk acoustic band to a metal band to fit Tarja’s voice. Toumas really liked the opera sound. He even pushed Tarja to do things she wasn’t comfortable with yet. I mean, the songs were more versatile back in Tarja and Annette’s eras than they are now. Toumas has Floor sounding exactly the same in every song.

Tarja is a classical singer rather than opera but there is a lot of overlap. It actually isn't the only style that she sings, although from what I've heard it was the most prevalent style when singing with Nightwish. To hear her do some very interesting things with her voice, I would recommend The Siren from End of an Era concert. I haven't heard much of her own stuff after leaving Nightwish, but she shows more diversity there, too. (The few I've heard do back this up. I need to hear a bit more.) In the new single she performs with Marko Hietalla 'Left on Mars' (actually written by him) she sings in a much more contemporary style.

You must absolutely hate most singers who never change their singing styles because they can't.
If you're speaking about Nightwish songs they always sound very close to the same instrumentally and vocally because that perform precisely to a click track to remain synched to their background recording and stage effects which leaves leaves little room for ad libbing. They pride themselves on giving every audience the same quality performance.

if you really want hard dark spell-binding Tarja (and Marko too) with Nightwish:
(Tarja, our s'xy spell-binding gothic vampire dark queen, especially in these early performances, when she's still quite young)
(even some rocking on invisible guitar, head windmills, and etc theatrics too)
(oh, does Tarja have amazing stage presence, easily as much as Floor, but with some songs with nightwish, she's been a bit more restrained, and for all songs with nightwish, she lets the entire band shine, instead of it just being about her, like it mostly is with Floor, Tarja is absolutely NOT a "selfish diva", never has been, not with nightwish, not with anyone else)
(remember, the concerts/albums/covers must be BEFORE 2006, for Tarja's performances)
    (not ranked, just listed)
    1. Slaying the Dreamer
    2. Planet Hell
    3. Wishmaster

    5. Ghost Love Score
    6. The Siren
    7. End of All Hope
    8. Dead to the World

I suggest Dark Chest of Wonders, The Siren, or Phantom of the Opera cover song (her duet with Marko will blow your mind. If you like Pink Floyd, check out their cover version of High Hopes. Again, all these songs are from End of an Era tour.

Tuomas is greatest monster in NW. He and Tarja was a pair, but she find another and he get mad and do everything he could, with help of others eg. marko (small letters) to destroy Tarja. In 2005 she left group. After few years she found her musicians to follow her, and have her own successful carrier. After marko (small letters) left NW he cheat Tarja that he apologies her so that he have concerts with Tarja's musicians.
