Making a Modern Leather Coaster Set
Leather Coasters are a good simple project for beginning leather crafters or anyone looking for a quick, fun project. We like making leather coasters because you can make them as simple or as complicated as you want - you can stitch them by hand or leave them plain, you can make them in any shape, and you can use almost any type of leather that grabs your attention!
We wanted to make a leather coaster set that looked a bit more modern in an arts-and-crafts way, so we designed a leather stand to display the leather coasters while they are not in use. We then decided on using square coasters and displaying them on end like a diamond - we cut out the leather by hand, glued it to a backing of vegetable tanned leather so that our leather coasters are reversible, and used a saddle stitch with poly threads to make them nice and strong.
when you make leather coasters it is important to condition them so that any moisture does not harm them permanently. It is ok if leather gets wet, you just need to make sure that leather has been treated with a wax or oil-based conditioner so that the water does not penetrate the surface without drying as this can cause mold. When properly conditioned, leather coasters will take on very beautiful patina from the repeated water marks, and look absolutely beautiful displayed on a table even when not in use!

Combined the coasters with a toss tray for the coaster holder for a wedding gift last week. Worked really well together.

I saw you slicing a cord with a razor blade. A little safer (and more consistent way) is take a hollow Pen tube, and push a razor tip into the side of it. Feed the cord from one side, and pull it from the other for long, consistent slicing.

What kind of leather have you used for the stand. Wondering how the stand holds its shape..
What needles do you use? I spent an entire baseball game stitching 4 coasters just like that. But had to use pliers and a thimble to get my needle though the holes. I even went through them with a diamond awl before stitching.
This was interesting, I like the holder, but was wondering what the dark leather on the coaster was, was it a veg tan with oils and waxes?

I like the holder for these! Curious what diameter cord you used? Looks like maybe 5mm or thicker?

I'm new to leather working, in fact i have never made anything. But i love this coaster set for the simplicity and design. I purchased your pattern and i love that you included several shape options. I will be practicing my leather working skills with this pattern. Also, do you think using reclaimed furniture leather will be ok to use in this project? Absolutely! You'll probably want to use a stiffener in the middle of the two pieces if you're using upholstery leather (heavy cardboard, plastic, etc), but it's totally doable, that'd be really cool! Happy making, and thank you so much for the nice words :)

I’m a beginner at leather working and this is really amazing to see! How to you cut the leather in one pass? It usually takes me 3-5 cuts to get all the way through and I think I am using the same thickness as you are 2-3 oz
Lots of practice and a sharp blade! We use disposable blades because it allows us to be quick and productive doing our production work, but it's also a great way for beginners in the craft to guarantee they've got the sharpest blade possible while cutting because learning how to keep a fixed blade knife sharp is a whole skill unto itself!

Why do you waste so much leather?? I´m so frustrated to see you leave so much on each side when you cut, I don´t understand why?
Ewa Bergman Holmberg I was thinking the same. Less wastage to measure up, mark out and then cut with both full size pieces glued smaller. Ah well, their channel and business so who are we to judge.. haha.
When you see us cutting like this we're either cutting around imperfections or using up scrap with imperfections that don't always show up on camera. On the black piece, the entire thing was a small section of poc-marked leather near the belly. Since it is a bridle leather it's too waxy for us to use for sampling wallets. So we used it up for this project where it'll be getting wet, and were liberal with it as we have totes and totes of scrap leather that we can't use fast enough. It either gets used for samples, donated to the scouts, or the smaller pieces get tossed.

Pattern for a square box. Lol. Give us patterns for wallets then I'd be impressed.
For you it might be simple to draft on your own, but people of all skill levels watch our channel. We posted a pattern for a wallet last week and this week we posted a simple project that can even be made without sewing. Realistically squares, circles, and other perfect shapes are some of the hardest things to master when beginning leather craft - It's important to us that all skill levels can enjoy this stuff and learn from it.
