I am 51 years old and suffer from depression .. I struggle to concentrate on anything but your videos have been god send to me .. simple and easy to follow .. thanks for being so generous with your knowledge ❤🙏
I feel for you. If you like guitar repair ( or don’t at all) I HIGHLY recommend checking out “TWoodford” on YT. Ted Woodford is a luthier with tons of great ( soothing and interesting) videos- He has numerous followers who are in your situation and find his content equally as helpful as this delightful soul and her leather craft! Be well, Shawn
When I struggle with stitching I come back to your video. I see that my stitch holes are not big enough. My leather is tough, and 1/8" thick. I like your patience, by not rushing the video, and repeating the stitches. Us newbies (and older guys) greatly appreciate you.
Watched about 2 minutes of this and was able to finish making my first billfold, saw one I like for $90 and thought I could make something for way less, and I’m quite pleased
Thank you!! You taught me how to Saddle Stitch. In moments, I didn't finish watching the video. You gave me the confidence to repair an old folding buck knife sheath. Now I want to make a new one. A million Thank you's for being such a good teacher! Angel from The Bay Area sunny California, USA
I agree with David Guerrero-this is the best video on saddle stitching I've ever seen. I learned to stitch by watching this video. Thank you for such great instructions, J.H.
Very good. Easy to Watch. Blue thread stands out well against back leather background. Video views of action are excellent and repetitive enough to get comfortable with the activity... as opposed to being up-tight and concerned we missed something important. Thank You. Crystal presentation. 5 stars !!
I’m new to leather work and like many I’ve been struggling with getting a neat saddle stitch. Your demo/lesson shows a slightly different method than others, but it’s the first I’ve been able to copy and adopt. I still need more practice but my stitches are much improved. Thank you for your efforts in sharing your expertise and educating all us noobs 👍
Thanks for the video. This is the first video where the stitching shown was just as I was taught as an apprentice, saddle maker, harness maker and strapper in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It was explained to me that flipping the tail of thread over the needle was the "lock stich" because each time you pulled the thread over it was effectively a single granny knot. When we back stitched we always used a special oval awl blade so as not to cut the thread and we also flipped the tail over twice on the back stitches as it really filled the stitching hole and prevented unravelling. The modern awl is a particularly unattractive tool, they used to be things of beauty with lovely lines. I left the apprenticeship as I could not live on $24.00 a week. I still have my old tools that I use from time to time for an odd job. All the best.
Right, not much of an apprenticeship. Too bad you couldn't have hooked up with a new business somewhere, or maybe do side projects selling on line to assist finances. Thank you for the oval awl blade idea. I'll try using a small carpenter's awl [ round ]. Thank you for posting, this student has a lot to learn..
I've never seen anything like this. That trick of locking the thread on the needles looks really handy. This stitch could work in a lot of situations. I really respect those that learn their craft.
As a laborer, in profession... I can tell from the worn and well used saddle pony (along with the ease in which you make this look) that you’ve been doing this a while! I cannot thank you enough for teaching me a new skill! My very first, and hopefully not last, leather project is to make a “sign-in book” for my upcoming wedding. I’ve already made the pages and carved out the exterior of the book from a 9.0oz shoulder, vegetable tanned hide. I’ve carved and stamped until I can’t see straight. Cut belts and sandblasted/hammered/blued old buckles and clasps... all “winging” it... until now. -how in the heck do I sew these belts onto this book!??- Answer is above!! After about ten minutes, I’ve got a good rhythm and the video is over. So I watch it again, and again just to make sure I’m doing things right! (And your accent doesn’t hurt to listen to btw) From the Williams family, we thank you for passing on a valuable skill! One that I will hopefully get the opportunity to pass on, along with many others I’ve learned from the amazing people I’ve had the graces to stumble across on here!
I've watched almost every saddle stitch video on TH-cam and this is by far the best due to the camera being positioned as if we, the viewer was looking down on the leather itself. Every other video shows it from some weird angle and then you'd have to mentally visual which needle goes in which way.
Excellent! what a pleasure to watch the short, crisp video with no fluff and waste of time. It indeed helped me stitch leather covers for my chisels. Thank you.
@@JHLeather Absolutely! No doubt. I certainly made one chisel protector, but it is not worth showing. Maybe fourth or fifth that displays some finesse.
Thank you for the tutorial wow, no nonsense extra words, I loose interest easy with videos with people telling their life stories, it was a pleasure just to watch it.
Thank you Jo. I just finished my first project. I watched your demo twice and of I went. Not that I'm a quick learner. More a testament to your clear instruction. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Stitching was definitely my favorite stage.
Thank you very much, you explain very clearly, and I saw a lot of movies that explain but not as good as you explained, so thank you again so much, during this time of the corona virus I found that it was my hobby because I had not been out in my house in Israel for two months and it really helped I spend time having fun, and now thanks to you, I know how to sew leather. Sorry for my bad English, I use Google Translate, thank you very much and happy weekend
Best video out there for saddle stitching the correct way. Most importantly your camera angle from the top clearly shows how to do this properly. Thank You. It also helps to have a good awl, I prefer a short .75 inch shaft and one with a larger handle the palm can push through to save some pain on a long run.
Thank you so much. I've been planning to make a vinyl pouch by hand, but knew the stitching wasn't right in my practice runs. A short by another creator led me here. This is what I needed. Also great for hand repairing bags ❤️
The best video for leather hand stitching. I'm a beginner in leather craft. I'm making a bag which needs a few stitches at the end of the zipper. I'll make a few tries before stitching on my bag. Thank you for taking the time to share!
That's the most clear and understandable video on stitching I have seen yet. Could this be the start of a revolution in my stitching technique? I think so! Thankyou.
I'm just learning to make leather knife sheaths, being a complete novice, and this video was the most useful I could find on TH-cam for the basic stitching technique. Many thanks Jo 👍
I just learned how to saddle stitch, and finished a knife sheath, thank you so much, I've been making them the in and out method for years, I love the way this one turned out, awesome, thank you
This is brilliant, I've never saddle stitched before and had no clue this video is the best available all the other vids were minute upon minute of confusing waffle. This camera work and narrative was perfect! Tha k you so much.
Hi Jo, the overhead camera angle is superb, as apposed to your archive tutorial. It greatly improves the understanding of the saddle stitch and as they would say in the U.S ….Good Job. Cheers and thanks.

Superb, easy to follow and clear explanation. Thank you. I loved the part where you were just sewing - no need for talking at that point - i was following you perfectly, almost mesmerised by the rhythm and me chanting the steps ..... then those ads kicked in ! Lol
Thank you very much for your tutorialseries! All the Videos in my Language were very unorganised or just expected that you knew the basics wich I do not as a beginner. Will definetly follow your channel! Greetings from Germany.

Tried my first leather project today, made a leather pouch for my Leatherman, your tutorial was perfect. I didn’t have all the tools you did so my spacing isn’t always straight or equal but it works perfectly

I 1000% second this!
This video saved me from loosing my marbles. Pull the first thread down and push the second trough the top on the hole. What a pickle I've been in!!
