I was introduced to Franks music in 1973-74 when I was 10 years old. My first concert was October 29th 1978 at the Stony Brook university on Long Island. Over the next 10 years I’d gone to approximately 12 more concerts after that. My interest in any other musician or band was little to none. I did like Jeff Beck a lot. Probably because everything was an instrumental. Franks guitar spoke and so did Jeff’s. Zappa music transcends any music ever written, recorded and performed. I was a guitarist and being exposed to his music at such an early age, pretty much shaped the way my playing went. I don’t play anymore. But still listen to Frank religiously.

Hello Martin. I loved this video, it brings back good memories 43 years ago I discovered Frank Zappa thanks to it and I became a fan immediately and always will be. What you are saying is about Frank's body language, this concentrated poker face style and his body which twists in all directions to the rhythm of his awesome improvisation are characteristic of the Zappa style. He said that his source of inspiration was human conversations and that's what he does here, he dialogues with his guitar. Thank you for sharing your passion for the Master with us. Miami Vice shirt is excellent Martin 😂

I like your analysis of this solo. I only discovered this video a short while ago and it’s definitely one of my favourites. The video itself showcases Franks playing which a lot don’t. This solo always gives me goosebumps, I’ve played it to friends who just ‘don’t like it’ - to me (like you) it’s it’s his different style, down to the way he played, no jumping about or classic guitar poses. Stones faced and ‘sculpting’ his guitar notes. No ‘weedly weedly’ shit either, lots of LOW notes. My favourite part is where he hits the pedal and changes it up a notch. First class and still streets ahead of his time.🤘

If some of Frank's contemporaries in the rock world sounded a little bit cleaner in their solos, it's because they were playing the same solos every night! Even the better improvisors repeated themselves a lot and they all shared the same blues-rock vocabulary. It seems that every time Frank played a guitar solo, he told a new story, but not only that, it was all with his own vocabulary. This is what made him the master.

Great show, Martin!! What I love about Zappa's guitar solo's, is that he does not rehearse them at all. They are all improvisations, so they are never the same. He just plays what he feels at that moment, so each solo is 100% unique. Keep up the great work on your channel. You're doing a fantastic job!!

That's crazy, you said he puts shivers in your body How I get chills from my head to my toes. When I listen to him live especially his guitar solos. It's so profound. I'm a drummer myself. I've been playing since I was 12 years old. But I've never had another musician who played a different instrument. Ma'am, so profoundly impact me and make me wanna listen to that instrument. But only hear Frank play It. There's no other guitars that I crave to hear. It's just something about The way he plays guitar that fascinates the hell out of me. I've never been taken in like this, not Jimmy Hendricks, Eddie Van Halen Jimmy page Stevie ray John mclaughlin robert fripp. Is really only two other guitarists That fascinate me And that's adam jones from tool and adrian belew Who also played with Frank Zappa to me? His greatest rhythm guitarist he ever had and singer. He was only with Zappa for one. Maybe 2 years, 77 and 78. But he's been with the talking heads and king crimson And is amazing solo career

I've skimmed a lot of reactions and was surprised to see this one pop up. I'm an old Zappa fan, but like most Zappa fans, there's aspects of his music that resonate with me more than others. For instance I'm more interested in his composition and arranging than his comedy and social satire. Sometimes his guitar solos seem excessively long to me; explorations that miss. Other times, like this one, he presents one fascinating idea after another. One of the things that made his playing different was his approach. He wasn't a guitar player just playing a bunch of memorized licks; it was more like spontaneous composing. For him, His fretboard probably looked like a blank sheet of music, waiting for those little black dots.. I think you put a lot of thought into this reaction and I appreciated it. Thanks.

Yesterday I finished a Zappa bio called "Electric Don Quixote" by Neil Slaven. There's little personal stuff there about his relationship with his wife/kids etc. though I thought it is an excellent overview of his professional life. I have most of Zappa's output on vinyl, CD or the computer and I'm interested in recording in general so I also recently splurged on "The Big Note - A Guide to the Recordings of Frank Zappa" It's a pretty incredible encyclopedia with personnel, sources for the recordings and recording details. Not a book for everyone but it scratches the itch for people like me.

He does that to everybody when he pulls you into his world, he becomes the pinnacle of all music and he will change your life , he changed mine for the better, he'seducated me more bout global issues, human condition, life, music & myself more than any one musician and frankly most of the people in my life . Always thought the pinnacle of music was rush, King Crimsom, Mahavishnu orchestra Pink floyd Zeppelin & yes, prog rock/jazz And of course, I still do love those bands and they certainly opened me up to the world of frank zappa. And of course my older brother. I didn't understand Frank and his music or his logic When I was a teenager and even in my early 20s. But by the time I got to my 30s.
I really started to grasp his studio albums and really listen to that. Well that left the door ajar to something even greater ....his live music. I mean, I can't go a day without listening to his live stuff, His amazing guitar souls I don't think there's a greater guitar player ever or composer then frank vincent zappa. I've got all of his live albums on the zappa family trust and any bootleg I can get my hand on.. I'm addicted to his music in the best way possible Especially his live music. I don't think I'll ever stop listening to him, and I'm 48 now. I want to be buried to his music. .....Watermelon in easter hay

He doesn't approach guitar playing to show off he does it for exercise In the human experience, he goes out there and just physically with his fingers Sees where it's gonna take him. Of course it's for the people. But the ego is not present when playing.

Even those who claim to be pure improvisors develop a style of their own which shapes their improv. Still/Always better than the same solo every performance, in most circumstances.
