    Do you enjoy propagating houseplants? Which method do you prefer more. The water or prop box method?

      Water propagation is my go to for most of my plants, I love it! Definitely gonna give the prop box method a go 👌🏻

      It used to be water but I recently got into propagating with sphagnum moss in prop boxes where I basically forget about them then voila a new plant when I do check on them a couple months later.

    Christian, I found my self reflecting back to a time when I first found you on TH-cam. It was a repotting video in your home, you were sitting at a table. Seems like a long time ago, but it wasn't. You have accomplished so much in a 'blink' of time.

  • @kyrad6543

    I learned one of the most valuable propagation lessons from you in an older video. That was to make sure if you are planting your rooted cutting back into the pot with the mother plant, that you plant it very deeply so that the roots on your cutting are at the level that the roots would be on the mother plant. It seems so simple now but I never thought about it until you taught me! Loveyameanit!

      What is the reasoning for that? I’ve never heard that?

    • @kyrad6543
      @kyrad6543 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Victoria_Marie the bottom of the pot usually stays damp longer than the top. If you plant your new cuttings shallow they may be in soil that dries up quickly.

    I tried my hand at prop. for the first time with a variegated soh, moonlight treubii, and exotica. They all survived and are growing now!!! I am so shocked at how easy it was! I tried from water to soil and straight soil prop. they all worked! I barely watered the straight soil only to slightly moist and showered the water props w/ water and slowly took away to normal watering. Way easier than in my head. Used ziplock bags for all of them and slowly took it away.

    I just recently got my hands on some Manjula cuttings and I'm very excited, my plan is to eventually have them grow up a moss pole to get those big beautiful leaves! I also had a philo brazil that was growing really weird and I just decided to chop it up and start over and I'm very excited about that too! I mainly do water prop but I did start trying some things in moss or just sticking things directly in dirt...

    Great timing! I have had a horrible lack of success in propagation. I've tried water propping a lot and it just doesn't work for me. I've followed the technique you outlined, but whatever knack it is, I don't have it. So I'm going in for a prop box this time. I had a desperately underperforming melanochrysum and now I have half a melanochrysum and a handful of wet sticks. Wish me luck!

    I took a cutting from my string of bananas plant a few weeks ago (the base of its stem had rotted, was trying to save the rest of it), and it has done something I haven't had them do before. usually, the cuttings I root in water continue as a single stem. But, for this one and another, I tried rooting in potting mix at around the same time, they have new leaves at the base of some of the original leaves, and it looks like they'll grow into new stems/vines. really excited because I'd never gotten the plant to branch out before, the main plant just has 2 vines now, one about 1 foot long and the other probably around 3 feet long. I've had the main plant for around 2 years now and it's still surprising me.

    Great video the only plant that Iseem to be good at is Pothos. I have killed all of my Jade propagations. So far all of my Rubber plant propagatetions. Also a numer of plants that I can not even name. I have had some success with water propagation. Perlite does not seem to work. I am going to try your prop box method, using the sagnum moss. Thanks for the information.

      Pothos are great and can really teach us a lot about how the cuttings react as they’re being propagated. I’ve learned alot by propagating my pothos and using it as guideline to trying different plants 😁

    It can be very difficult to remove the moss from roots when the plant is ready to go in soil. Every time I try I end up breaking off tiny feeder roots. I prefer pumice or water.

  • @karlvassallo7628

    Chris, why not direct into the mother plant pot? Any reason? Maybe why mine always die when put into soil?

    • @CazSantiago
      @CazSantiago 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. The main reason why you do not want to place the rooted cuttings in with the mother pot (I'm assuming your aim is to create a fuller looking pot) is because cuttings needs more water than a mature plant does. If you place the cuttings in with the mother plant, you run the risk of killing your mother plant due to overwatering. I typically like to keep the rooted cuttings in their own pot between 3-6 months months to ensure it is established before adding them to the mother plant pot or repot them all together in a new pot. Typically you'll want to keep your rooted cuttings in predominantly moist soil as Christian suggests until the root system has established and the roots have acclimated to begin in the soil medium in, so about 4-6 weeks. After that, water the plantling as you would the mature plant. Add to the mother plant or repot as desired. Hope this helps!

    Hi Christian! Great to see you! Question: once the plantlet propped in spag moss is ready to pot in growing medium, what is your rule of thumb on removing all of the moss from the new tender roots vs leaving some moss and plant it up??

    • @CrazyPlantGuy
      @CrazyPlantGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My rule of thumb is I try and remove as much of the moss as I can, however If a bit of the roots has some moss in it, than that’s ok to still pot up. Moss is also used to mix with soil to help create a bit more aeration ad well so no real harm.

    I just cut back one of my monsteras, it’s funny I can chop my monstera but my Thai con I’m terrified to touch it at all! I did just wash its leaves & it’s so beautiful but still just a baby!
