    I've been watching your videos for a few months now, well tonight I decided to try and pick my first lock, I broke a Bobby pin in half bent one side at a 90 for my tension wrench and started messing with it, long story short I actually picked it. it was a brinks pad lock

    love the channel. been on a lock-lab rampage for the past week, wouldn't mind getting into picking locks myself for my own purposes (i tend to lose the keys to all my locks quite often, more than id like to admit). its great to learn how these locks are made and put together. it took me a few hours to figure out the terms you use. thanks for all the quality content you put up :)

    Great video Mr. Bill! You are responsible for my love of lock picking. The first video I saw of you was this pass Thanksgiving video. I've been picking since! So I would like to thank you for all the help you give us every day! Semper Fidelis!

      Dear Mr. Johnson I would like to first thank you for your inspiration. It's due to you that I love picking locks ( as a hobby of course). It was last year's Thanksgiving video that set the "lock picking wheels in motion".
      Since then, if become quite a picker, thanks to you and your videos. But I'm still learning, and still on pin tumbler locks.
      I'm working on my first challenge lock that I'll be sending your way soon!
      One other thing, right now I'm unemployed, but as soon as I'm on my feet again, I well become one of many Fan Founders.
      Thank you for all you do in and for the Lock Picking Community!

    That top t-pin might have dropped down past the sheer line, so it did do something.

    I'm going to take a shot at this. The second pin was meant to be pointed up. Look at how short the key pin is, that means most of, if not all of, the driver pin would have been below the sheer line. So when you're trying to set the pin, you have to let off the tension to allow the larger bottom part of the driver pin to move up into the bible. That's why you had to use such light tension.

    That inverted T pin may have come into play, it's key pin was really short. In a resting position could it possibly give a false false set? Curious to see those two pins in the core together, if that cut is below the shear line I would think it could cause some evil. Just a thought.

    • @samuelglovacz4510
      @samuelglovacz4510 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's what I was thinking especially since he said to much tension bound the core completely

    • @tedpark6814
      @tedpark6814 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The inverted T does go below the shear line - the idea is that if you get a false set without having pin 2 set, it's very difficult to push the stack up to the shear line With spools, the driver is twisted slightly across the shear line, so it's easier to push the driver up. Some of the spools are slightly sanded, which makes it harder to determine binding order. The core is actually from a Master LOTO lock - the standard master cores have some countersinking on the pin chambers. I had tried replacing the Master "serrated" pin with one from an American padlock, but to me it seemed easier to determine what was going on with the American Lock driver if you're lifting the pin with a pick.
      +bosnianbill - Congratulations on getting that lock open! I enjoy watching your channel - thanks for using that lock in a video. Your reviews have certainly helped me make more informed purchasing decisions as well.

    Hey bill, ever considered using a spray on rubber coating on the end of a torsion wrench? I would expect it to stay in better, at the cost of potentially reducing some feedback (depending on how thick and soft the coating is.)

    That's an almost stock core out of a plastic lock-out tag-out lock. (I broke mine and had to take the lock apart)

    I'd love to see you do a special on technique with TOK tension. I just got my first flat tension bars from Sparrows, and I'm having a heck of a time with them falling out. We never get to see the whole method you use to hold them, since most of your hands are out of frame; what's your secret?

    • @pnutdunne81
      @pnutdunne81 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably need a thicker prybar. The one I use most is 1.2mm thick

    • @maxromisch3361
      @maxromisch3361 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're right. The ones I got were Sparrows...thickest one is 0.6mm. I'm having some luck with homemade ones, really just like BOK wrenches, but with hand-cut serrations. Prolly going to find some thicker stock and use Bill's DIY video on making my own thicker bars.
      Still, it'd be nice to see his feedback on what kind of technique he uses with these commercial bars. Hell, I've got 'em now, might as well figure out what I'm doing wrong and learn to use them.

      Paul, from one newbie to another. Get some graphite lube and slick up your targets. If theyve been outside you may need the dreaded WD-40. It really helps you get the feedback from the pins. Also, just keep trying and don't give up!

    i think i may have to disagree with Bill on this one. in chamber 2 the one with the inverter T pin. i think with as high cut as position 2 is that ledge sat below the shear line making it act as more of a spool than a standard, but it still didnt do the job of a T pin.

      No, anomalies like that are managed. We investigate the entries, anyone spamming gets dumped and added to a blacklist. But when someone accidentally enters a couple times, it's fine. We trim the entries back to one apiece and then Bill does a random drawing.

      Strange how much Bill underestimated the effectiveness of the second driver pin..

    • @TheTommysbeast
      @TheTommysbeast 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure, I would have thought that although that t-pin was inverted it could still get caught at the shear line because the key pin was so short.

    • @ernie5229
      @ernie5229 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the part he overlooked WAS the shortness of the key pin. With a key pin so short, the narrowed part of the driver was definitely below the shear line. This would effectively make it act very similar to a spool. Maybe even a little floppiness due to no "top" to the spool. Great pin!

      Arvid Regenberg Unfortunately, that isn't a Lock-Lab Forum, that's just the homepage of Lock-Lab. Sorry that you misunderstood me, but thank you for trying to help. If you go here: lock-lab.com/resources/forums-and-organizations/ You will see that it lists a lot of Forum's to post/read from, but I searched all over lock-lab.com and could not find an offical "lock-lab forum". I always assumed that Bill started his own Forum, for all his fans to communicate through and to buy/sell things specifically from Bill's "fan club", which I thought was great and decided to look it up to see if certain things were discussed, that are commonly discussed on his videos. I have already joined several of the OTHER forums and used them, but I was looking for something new, a Bosnian Bill's Lock-Lab Forum. With all the promoting he does, I thought the main attraction of the website was his personal Forum. Maybe someday we will get one, because his site is still fairly new or maybe I just can't find where HIS forum is. Hopefully this wordy reply, will explain exactly what I was looking for.

    hey guys i have some spring steel picks that have handles could us a little sanding what should/would i have to use?

    • @moaw9646
      @moaw9646 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I start with 400 or 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Pull it across tthe side of the pick so that it rolls over the edge as you pull it. then I hit it with 800 grit and 1000 grit. Anything finer than 1000 doesn't seem to have much additional effect.
      Be careful sanding some of the narrower tips, you could very easily take off too much. Some picks don't have much to lose. Others need some serious grinding (with sandpaper) just to be able to fit them in a normal keyway.
      With practice you'll know when to stop.
      BTW- Bill has some great videos about this in his MAKE YOUR OWN PICKS series.

      1000 or 1200 grit wet or dry sandpaper. Also, look at the video where Bill uses an old book to hold the sandpaper. This saves you from stabbing yourself with the pick.

    • @moaw9646
      @moaw9646 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      1000 grit and a book work great for polishing.
      I thought the question was about sharp edges. 1000 grit is not agressive enough to round over the edges very much and the book trick definitely keeps the edges from being sanded.
      Maybe I was wrong. If you just want to polish the picks up so they look nice then start with the 1000 grit. if you need to knock down the edges though, I would start with at least 600 grit first.
      I start, carefully, with 400 or even less because I'm not big on patience.
