Concrete, Shelter Logic, and Parking Pad | Prepping for Our Cabin Build

- All while fighting the rain, we hauled 37,000 pounds of concrete, put up a temporary shelter for our building materials, and finished our driveway and parking pad. Now we can bring in everything we need for our cabin without worrying about getting stuck in the mud!

Getting the concrete to your homestead and the associated challenges clearly demonstrates the logistical challenge of living remotely. It is impressive how you adjust quickly to an everchanging set of conditions with a viable solution. Chris, another masterful job getting you parking pad established. Those were some pretty gnarly boulders in what I presume was pit run. Be wary of those who would like to have a hand in spending "your" money. One can always throw money at a problem, but not always achieve a different outcome. Follow "your" plan and stay the course. Really admire what you guys are doing.
Hey Chuck, the biggest challenge living in our area is the cost. The farther away from the "city area," in alaska the price seems to double or more... with us working on a cash budget, we try to save where we can because we have more time than savings 😄 In concrete alone, we are cutting the cost close to a third hauling it in and mixing on sight. Some instances this would not work out, but with a pier type foundation, we can start and stop periodically. There is no need to pour all concrete the same day. Thank you for your kind words! Just a thought, if you need more traction get another set of chains for your tires. a double set on each tire I had a friend he got out of more mud problems than anybody else I know and he had two sets of change for all of his tires I'm just sharing. I love your content you guys are fun to watch thank you.be frugal.

I was going to ask why they don’t use their chains and spread the pit run, but you answered that. Yes! The soil is so unstable this year because the rain has hardly let up, so the stone is really necessary to even access the area. Thank you for supporting us 😃
What I like about your channel is that you guys are well prepared, well stocked and know what you faced with and doing. A lot of other channels promote a kind of naive wilderness and romantic adventure which it can certainly be but not all the time and certainly not when you dont know what you are doing. Glad you are enjoying our channel 😀 we had been preparing to make this type of move for quite some time it realy did take a lot of planning and preparation to make things work out the way the have for us. It was not a decision made lightly and was very challenging. Even being prepared as much as possible, we still have had a lot of curve balls thrown at us and had to become flexible 😄

I regret buying my tractor, and "wish" i would have invested in a tracked skid steer 11 years ago. (they are way to expensive now) But, best tool I ever purchased is my excavator. It payed for itself the first project. And, I know have a new skill, and can sell it for way more than I payed for it. I did comment on adding the tracks, but did not know that yours could not manage the extra weight. But, you are correct that it is way better than using a shovel. thanks for sharing, and addressing the questions/comments.
Hello, I've just seen both of your comments! If I had known, we would end up in alaska, I definitely would have invested in a nice used track skid steer prior to the crazy inflation priceing. In Pennsylvania, we lived on a hilly long dirt road that needed constant gravel maintenance and snow plowing. So this tire machine worked out really well for the price, we also used it a lot for loading our firewood. I never imagined doing the amount of forestry work it does now. The mini excavator is a perfect pairing machine to a skid steer and a great investment. Best of both worlds. If you get a nice track skid steer, you may decide to sell the tractor , hard to say. I like mini tractors for not tearing up lawns, running 3 point attachments, and light work. The tractors with tall rear tires and a back hoe really are the jack of all trades! I found all the mini tractors I used with short rear tires and no counter balance on the rear were very top-heavy and unstable while using the loader bucket on uneven ground. That's the biggest downfall that made me go to a used skidsteer. Hope you are enjoying our videos!

You are so right in your comparison of tractor vs skid steer for the work you are doing! You also have the right attachments too! 😊 My mini ex might, and I say might have done the work, but it would have been iffy at best. Keep on keeping on! I’m enjoying your content.😊
Glad you are enjoying the content! A mini excavator paired with a skid steer is the ultimate package for maintaining a sizeable personal property if you do not farm crops for sure! Then skip the garden tractors and go for the bigger ones to start farming! A large backhoe is the best jack of all trades just not as fast as the mini and skid. They all have advantages but at the end of the day, they are all so much better than a shovel 😅 our explanation in this video was to help everyone who commented on our older videos understand why we were not running out to purchase an 80k dollar tracked skid loader that many insisted we need for building up our property. It's just not in our budget, so we use our antique. We will keep on keeping on thank you!

Oh, and kudos on that Shelter Logic! We have one to keep my 21’ Bay Runner I use to fish and hunt KBay out of the snow. The other has other gear for our log home build this coming winter and our sawmill. Make sure you get a Snow Joe with a plastic blade and cover it with pipe installation. You’ll get years out of it!

You got some big rocks in your pit run. My biggest rock was tiny compared to your rocks. you have some nice rocks for a retaining walls or whatever. I bought a new e50 excavator just because it was cheaper than hiring out all of the work or even renting the equipment each time I needed to do something. The dump truck drivers don't use the spreader chains because you got "pit run" gravel so they don't know what size rocks are in it.
Yea, we went with a much cheaper stone company this time, and we were not satisfied with the boulder part, haha. Dibble Creek has a better pit run, but the cost is higher. Do you guys have Dibble Creek up north? I know they are all over the state. I can see the e50 being very useful! We had a kubota mini excavator years ago they are really handy. With the cost of contractors here, it makes a lot of sense to own personal equipment.
@@northtoalaska2022 pit run is dependent on the actual pit and not the company. We have Newman's up here in Willow.

Yes, it was disappointing.... unfortunately, that can happen with pit run because it is not run through a screen.

Not something a lot of people think about but if the dump truck hits a soft spot with the bed raised trying to spread it then it can actually tip the whole truck over.
Now that you have a good base down on the typar you could probably get them to spread some crusher run over it if needed.

Rubber tire roller is the best to use on a road not a vibratory compactor if use of vibratory compactor in a swampy area all it does is bring up the mud and make the road worse trust me I work done a paving outfit for 9 years and that's what I ran was the ruler 10 ton vibratory roller that thing used to break water means but I tell you if there was mud that they didn't dig out before they put in the gravel they would bring the mud right up through the road and they'd have to dig it back out again and replace it so you don't want to run a vibratory roller when there's any water around rubber tires work the best

The tents aren't very good? I've had mine up in the Anchorage area for 10 years without changing the top. Make sure you pull down the heavy snows with a snow rake and it will last for a really long time you also probably want to put rock in it as a base, or wood chips. You can't beat it for $1K. Ten years on the tarp is incredible! We had one of these temporary shelters back east that lasted 2 years... the reviews online for these are poor, and we see many of them at other folks' property with ruined tarps. We don't have high hopes, but it was necessary because we also don't have time to build a shed or pole building at this time, which is a better value. After we are finished building our cabin, we plan to move the shelter to another part of the property, I am curious how long the lifespan works out to be. That skid steer has been a real beast on this job from what I have seen. Not bad considering its 28 years old. Hopefully it survives your cabin build and gets your land in a reasonable state before it ends up going to the great scrapyard in the sky.
We would be in trouble without some type of machine out here, it gets used a lot. The antique has required a bit of attention to keep it in good order but the hours have been stacking up!

The rain has been ridiculous this year and the winds ??. I am glad we added sheer strength to our cabin. I wish we had the roof redone. We are residing or house and fighting the weather. I hope this means we are going to have a good winter but you never know. You got the good shelter logic. The higher pitch makes it shed snow better. That was a lot of boulders. I can tell you have done your homework. that gives you a big advantage. I look forward to seeing your progress. Great job!
Hello 👋 the rain has been frustrating 😄 It looks like we are getting a break this week. Finally! Hopefully, this weeks good weather helps you finish your sideing job. With the random wind gusts and earthquakes here, it is good to have the sheer strength like you mentioned. We were disappointed with the boulders... we may go with Dibble Creek again next time we need stone. They seem to have more control in size of pit run, but it is more expensive, too. We are glad you enjoyed our video 🙂
It really depends on the pit they get their gravel from. The boulders are nice when you are landscaping but not as a base because they workup. the fabric is so nice to keep the mud from working through. if you have deep areas to fill you can check with some of the excavating companies working in your area and see if the need to dump clean fill. They don't charge and it helps when yo have holes. We are getting things ready for winter this week I hope you have a great week God bless @@northtoalaska2022

Yes, we were disappointed about the boulders... 😅 this is true ! It is a lot different to be in the moment of having to complete these tasks with what you have on hand than watching it be done from home. It's not a perfect world. Great video guys. Another reason why the lorry drivers wouldn't use the gauging chains and roll back your drive is because they would hit those huge boulders. Hope you get a cut back for that. Those huge rocks should have been screened out before you got the delivery

It definitely wasn't "legal" but I've done 24,000lb on a gooseneck triple axle behind a 6.0 powerjoke dually(with a ton of engine/trans work i"ll admit) in summer and it really wasn't too bad. Prairie highways though, It'd probably have had to slow down and work pretty hard to get up long hills

I’ve 1/2 unloaded a lot of concrete pallets and landscape blocks. That stone was definitely not screened 😂. The shelter logic is pretty nice. Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing
I've watched a lot of these Alaska builds and they dont seem to have what we call "clean" rock like down in the lower 48. I dont know if everyone is just ordering gravel with "fines" or if that's all they have available.
Yea! We used a cheaper company this time and now we know why they are cheaper. 😅 the stone sizeing up here is different. No one uses this pit run type material back on the East Coast for a road base as far as I know... but almost every pad and road base is built with it here.
@@northtoalaska2022 Those boulders would go for $30 or $40 a piece here at a landscape supply 😂. Hopefully it’s not as expensive as stone has become here
@goatstead814 Good lord! These boulders were cheap then! The pit run here is 80$ per 15 ton, without delivery fee. So those boulders were a steal 😂 we were in South Eastern Pennsylvania prior to alaska ( not sure how close that is to you guys), but I do remember buying road millings 100 dollars for 15 ton I thought that was not bad , inflation has all the prices jacked up now I guess.
@@northtoalaska2022 I’m central PA, near Altoona. I haven’t priced that stuff in a long time. My daughter payed $150 a ton for River rock just recently.

Wonder if those dump drivers would do loads from Home Depot when you had a big load of materials. They can pull a big equipment trailer.
There are hauling companies out here. As expensive as everyone is in Alaska that I have inquired with, I have doubts they would haul it for less than the cost of the fuel it took to do it ourselves.

Sometimes, the sunset is just magnificent! We were able to watch the northern lights last night. The sky seems to always be putting on a show out here!
