Jeep Engine Stumbling Question

  • Hey folks. Long time viewers will know that I've done a lot to the Jeep and got the old L134 running really well in the past, but recently it has started sputtering and missing and misbehaving and I'm not sure why. I've done some basic troubleshooting and it all seems fine. It's to the point where I almost don't want to drive anywhere because I could end up on the side of the road. To recap, it has:
    New Distributor (Joe's Motor Pool)
    New Cap and Rotor
New Plug Wires (One replaced again just in case)
    New Plugs (properly gapped)
    New 12v Coil
New Blue Streak Points and Condenser
    New Carburetor (Joe's Motor Pool)
    New Wiring Harness (from scratch)
    New Gauges (as needed)
    New Ignition Switch
    New Starter Relay
    New Fuel Pump
    Probably more
In short, if the Jeep needed a part to start up and run, it was either cleaned up and confirmed functional or it was replaced. Ignition timing was set using a timing gun, then I used a vacuum gauge to dial it in. The idle is also pretty well dialed in.
It was running really well for awhile and I've only got around 124 miles on it since I got everything working before this behavior started happening. My gut tells me I've got some kind of intermittent ignition system problem but things seem to test good.

Put a pertronix brand ignition in it. I put one in my 3a last summer. Damn thing started so fast with that installed. I had to back the idle off. It comes with a new base plate that screws into existing holes. Best thing ever she won't miss a beat. I believe your already converted to 12volt so you're good to go. Not cheap at around $160 bucks but you will never look back

Which one did you put in it? a 2541?

@@SunkCostGarage I don't have the part number anymore. But I can call my local parts store here. I have a charge account there and they should be able to pull it up. Either way it's the one that replaces the entire base plate inside the distributor

I think the pertronix ignition is a good idea as well - I’m very happy with mine. It almost seems that your issue is more carb related though. Seems very intermittent,
maybe a small vacuum leak? Try spraying around the base of the carb with break clean or carb cleaner or something like that while it’s running to see if you hear a difference - if you do that means you have a vacuum leak. Just a thought .. also could check your fuel filter or anything on the fuel delivery side, seems to intermittent to be ignition related but anything possible

I'm keeping a Pertronix 2541 in mind. I can always keep the points and condenser plate in the toolbox for a roadside tactical swap. I did check for a vacuum leak by spraying some brake cleaner around the carb and manifolds, no change. Fuel filter is pretty clean but I do have a different style that I've been meaning to install. I'll probably look at the carb itself soon. It's new but there could have been some dirt or something that got through.

Those condensers today are junk. Try and convert over to Electronic Ignition and eliminate the points and condenser. Also Ethanol gas ( e 10 ) goes bad after sitting with an almost empty tank. Good luck keep plugging. We all enjoy your content.

It was ethanol free gas. I'm lucky to have a local gas station that has it. And it's a Blue Streak condenser, they're the only ones these days that seem to still make a quality one. I had considered an electronic ignition, though. I'm tempted to convert to EFI someday, which would require it.

Did you leave the key on? Perhaps the points are burned up. Does it run fine at higher rpm? Coluld be some dirt in the carburetor idle circuit. Have you changed the oil in your oil bath air cleaner? I recently had a tractor with a dirty moisture laden air cleaner run poorly. Someone already mentioned bad fuel or PCV valve. Turn the lights out and see if you have a breach in the ignition insulation somewhere.
That's all the simple stuff that I can think of. I'm sure it's a simple problem with a simple fix, but finding it is the real frustration. Good luck.

Points looked clean. Runs better at higher RPMs. The oil in the air cleaner still looks fresh, no apparent moisture. Could somehow be dirt in the carb, I'll have to pull it and check to be sure. PCV is new but maybe it somehow got clogged already.

@@SunkCostGarage I'm running an aftermarket carburetor. I've had to clean my idle circuit twice. Maybe it has to do with the inefficiency of an oil bath air cleaner
