I've been growing increasingly frustrated with the Jeep's inability to run and idle well lately. I thought I had it figured out at the beginning of the video, but by the end of the video the original problem had come back. There was definitely an exhaust leak due to a failed gasket between the manifolds but I didn't expect every gasket to be leaking in places. After pulling the manifolds, clean...

Nothing too special in this one. I went on a beer run and went through a local mall area in my vintage Jeep on the way home. It's nearly the 4th of July so I thought It would be a nice opportunity to get the old rig out of the garage and rattle some more dirt off of it. I passed a Tesla on the way through, which I thought was funny. 80 something years of difference there. And this Jeep will pro...

I picked up this basket case Lane Acclaim coffee table on a whim for $5 because it was pretty well ruined already. It was water damaged from being rained on, the entire side of it was broken off, there was loose veneer and water stains, there was basically no finish left on it, and overall it was not worth trying to rescue. But, for $5 I figured it might be worth trying to salvage. I was able t...

    The pump can be rebuilt to get diaphragm out. Remove rocker arm spring then you can see movable part behine it. With long nose vice grips squeeze it and this forces the lever upwards. Push down and away from the rocker arm it will slip over and out reverse the process to install new diaphragm and parts.

    • @SunkCostGarage
      @SunkCostGarage วันที่ผ่านมา

      This fuel pump was one of the non-rebuildable types. (Or at least, not easily rebuildable.) The diaphragm came out fine, etc. but it was the check valves that didn't come out. The rebuildable ones have a little retainer that unscrews and the check valves fall right out. This one had them pressed in with the metal around them upset to hold them in place. You would have to drill them out carefully, install new ones, then upset the metal again to hold them in place.

    I have an idea you could try, I have a Jeep with a Toyota engine, known for being quite good, but for me it has always run like garbage, and one thing I discovered is that if I disconnect the alternator it runs good, I've followed your channel for a really long time and I'm really confused as what could make your Jeep run rough. Since you have so many good new parts on it, it should run like a top. So my guess is that you should have some electrical gremlin of some sort to act so weird, good luck and don't lose hope! 👍

    • @SunkCostGarage
      @SunkCostGarage 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have questions about the alternator myself. It's putting out 14.5V now according to the gauge. Could be overcharging. I know from driving several Hondas that electrical issues can cause weird stuff. A single corroded ground can wreak havoc on sensors, causing the computer to throw codes that make no sense. Even on this jeep where there are no computers, weird stuff can still happen on the ignition side.

      @@SunkCostGarage mine puts out 15/16v and runs fine it’s a bit high but haven’t had any issues. I’m running a gm style 1 wire. If your problem was electrical I would think you wouldn’t even get it to run. You technically can run it for a while on just the battery without the alternator since the only thing that needs juice is the coil once it’s started. Are you getting 12v to the coil consistently? You can test this easily by just discounting the alternator (leave the belt in place just unplug the wire and see if it runs better)

    I bought a beater CJ5 and I knew the valves needed adjustment, as they are always forgotten. The best one had like .006 lash, a couple had none and most were between .002-.004, also two spark plugs were dead. Can't believe the engine would run, also the engine oil was so junky, it had like 10psi when revved and basically 0 at idle, just changing the oil it went to 25 at idle. 😂 These jeeps take a lot of abuse for sure and keep going.

    One thing I did on mine is permatex has an orange gasket maker you apply to both sides of your exhaust gaskets for a better seal. I need to do the valve adjustment on mine as they are to noisy. Regarding your issue seems like it’s fuel related, is the fuel pump strong - do you have a glass bowel and can you watch it pump?

    • @SunkCostGarage
      @SunkCostGarage 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I almost bought that high temp permatex. If it fails again, that'll be the cheap fix. The fuel pump is relatively new and seems strong. There's always fuel in the glass bowl and you can see it moving. I haven't put a fitting on it to test fuel pressure but it looks like it's doing the job.

      @@SunkCostGarage yea I was having some issues with my solex and it was fuel pressure related - the Carter w/o solved it for me .. one other thought are you running an oil bath or cartridge air filter? @SunkCostGarage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It has been a minute, but I believe on mine the whole inner shaft and worm gear just pulled right out with minimal effort once the 3 bolts were removed. (lucky me?) You might have some rust or dirt on the outer bearing cup holding it in place if you've already pulled the 3 bolts, retainer, and shims. I remember that outer bearing cup being a light interference fit. I don't think you should have to tap out the bottom freeze plug first. You might consider putting the shaft in a vise if you have one available, then gently tapping the body of the housing with a rubber mallet. (Getting the housing off the shaft, versus getting the shaft out of the housing.)

Have you changed the oil in your oil bath air cleaner? I recently had a tractor with a dirty moisture laden air cleaner run poorly. Someone already mentioned bad fuel or PCV valve. Turn the lights out and see if you have a breach in the ignition insulation somewhere. That's all the simple stuff that I can think of. Try spraying around the base of the carb with break clean or carb cleaner or something like that while it’s running to see if you hear a difference - if you do that means you have a vacuum leak. Just a thought .. also could check your fuel filter or anything on the fuel delivery side, seems to intermittent to be ignition related but anything possible

    Put a pertronix brand ignition in it. I put one in my 3a last summer. Damn thing started so fast with that installed. I had to back the idle off. It comes with a new base plate that screws into existing holes. Best thing ever she won't miss a beat. I believe your already converted to 12volt so you're good to go. Not cheap at around $160 bucks but you will never look back

      @@SunkCostGarage I don't have the part number anymore. But I can call my local parts store here. I have a charge account there and they should be able to pull it up. Either way it's the one that replaces the entire base plate inside the distributor

    Those condensers today are junk. Try and convert over to Electronic Ignition and eliminate the points and condenser. Also Ethanol gas ( e 10 ) goes bad after sitting with an almost empty tank. Good luck keep plugging. We all enjoy your content.

      It was ethanol free gas. I'm lucky to have a local gas station that has it. And it's a Blue Streak condenser, they're the only ones these days that seem to still make a quality one. I had considered an electronic ignition, though. I'm tempted to convert to EFI someday, which would require it.

    You might need fresh gasoline

      It's some ethanol free stuff from maybe October or November. I wouldn't think it would have gone bad already but it's always possible.
