Going UP, UP, UP in Gaia! 🚡 | Cable cars, cork, and... sardines?

  • The second half of our stay in northern Portugal was no less gloomy, but we still got out there, crossed the bridge from Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, and spent the day exploring the area from new heights (though even on the ground, there was still plenty to find, including one of the most random shops we've seen yet).
    Side note: A big thank you to @module79l28 for pointing out the difference between Porto and Gaia! We honestly had no idea we'd crossed into a new city across the river, so if we refer to that section as "Porto" in the video, just know the cable car side is actually Vila Nova de Gaia.

    I'm really enjoying these vlogs. I loved the wrap up at the end and am glad you are sharing both the ups and downs.

    I cannot believe you didn't do a port wine visit after you went on the cable car. That is the most iconic thing to do when visiting Porto. So many great Port companies

    Hi, just wanted to say that the level of organisation before you left the US was off the chart. Very impressive! I've only got 2 things to say, You mentioned you're only 17 days into your adventure but i travelled round the world for a few years and there are surprises round every corner and you can't plan everything and after 600 or 700 days i continued to wing it. Tbh it's all part of the adventure and i bet you remember the beggers for years to come and laugh about it eventually. My only other piece of advice is i found the greatest experiences were had when i wasn't in a city so makes sure you go off piste, you won't regret it. Anyway have fun, safe travels and looking forward to the next installment.

      Thanks so much, Scott! 😄 You're absolutely right: no matter your plans or expectations, traveling finds new ways (both good and bad!) to surprise you. For context, we're on Day 85 of the trip outside the videos, as of the time of this comment (it's sad to realize we're near the end 😢), so there's certainly been time to learn just how true your words are. We can't imagine several YEARS of traveling, though; you're so lucky! Maybe one day... 😊

      Day 85 wow I bet you've had a great time and I look forward to watching the rest of the trip. You're near the end but won't it be great to sleep in your own bed and put your clothes in a drawer and cupboard (random examples but they were the first ones that popped into my head). All the best 👍

    The cable car trip reminds me of the funicular in Bergen we took up the mountain, on our big Scandinavia trip before we had Baz.

    • @qlctravels
      @qlctravels  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just had a little Google of said funicular, and the views from atop that mountain look spectacular. A note has been taken for potential future trips in that direction.

    Fun Fact: Gaia is a separate city and its own municipality, so you spent most of your day in Gaia and not in Porto.

      @qlctravels  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh, interesting! I guess we thought Gaia was farther along, but if the river was the divide, we have a video title to change…

      @@qlctravels - Gaia was literally written on the cable car. 😄
      All the wineries and Port wine cellars are in Gaia and yes, the river is the divide, just like in Lisbon: north shore = Lisbon, south shore (where the Christ The Redeemer statue is located) = Almada.

    Been on the cable car twice.
    First time my girlfriend was terrified and didn’t appreciate me finding the situation funny.
    Second time was fine .
    Lisbon is incredible,you’ll love it.
    Try the Peri Peri chicken
    Another great video .
    Cheers

      Oh yes, we can imagine the cable cars would be a nightmare for someone who doesn’t like heights. Glad it all worked out the second time 😅
      Lisbon was indeed incredible, and a total surprise. We can definitely see ourselves going back there some day.
      Thanks for the continued support! 😊

      We’d still recommend visiting if you’re looking for a beautiful city to just relax in for a few days. It didn’t click with us, but we can certainly see the appeal for others - especially in nicer weather.
      Regardless, thank you so much for watching! 😊

    15:20 Brian (with adorable schoolboy optimism): "Are you about to buy me a pin* or something?"
    Lauryn (with thinly disguised contempt): "No. It's not about you!"
    *Or was it _pen?_ Despite having been told repeatedly by a tiny, fiery, beautiful blonde lady that Ohioans are accentless and are the easiest in the world to understand, my experience is quite to the contrary.😝

    • @qlctravels
      @qlctravels  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was indeed “pin.” And the contempt was indeed thinly disguised. 😄
      Ohio accents might be a bit deceptive, depending on what part of the state we’re from. Us northeast Ohioans tend to have that flat, more “neutral” accent (the newsreader kind) - at least when compared to other American accents. However, certain parts of southern Ohio have an accent of their own, with quite unique pronunciations for certain words. I’m assuming that fiery blonde you mentioned wasn’t the latter, though, if she was so insistent her accent was neutral.

      @@qlctravels She's from North Ridgeville and goes a step further than your good self by claiming that she has no accent of any kind - not just a neutral accent, but NO accent whatsoever. I know it's hyperbole, she knows it's hyperbole, she knows that I know it's hyperbole, yet she still maintains the charade just to annoy me and I have to give credit where it's due.

      That's only 45 minutes from my hometown (Akron). And yeah, gotta admire her commitment to the bit. 😆
