So are the days of Tower Power coming back? Used to get a lot of items from Tower Hobbies when I lived in Indiana. Sure miss Great Planes and Hobbico as well. Those were good times. Great maiden. God bless.

To bad about the propeller, but i love it when you bring the plane close to the camera. And I just love a glider's majestic way it moves through the air. It's like a meditation to watch.
8:29 "I'm giving maybe 15 - 20% up elevator" - I think he meant to say *down* elevator because, as the old saying goes, "when flying inverted down is up and up is expensive."
I got mine delivered this morning. I have to say the build quality is top notch. There is plenty of plastic reinforcement in the wing roots, the battery tray is incredible, and I love the main spar solution. The T-mount stab goes on with just 2 screws and is also on a plastic reinforced mount. A 3200 4s battery fits nicely and balances at the back of the tray. A 2200 4s balances near the front of the tray. The Velco battery straps have buckles! SO much nicer than the cheap Velcro straps in E-Flite models. The foam has no mold marks. It's incredibly smooth, and feels high density and strong. I'm putting in the AR637T and replacing the stock 40-amp ESC with a Smart 45-amp Avian. I will not fly a sailplane without ESC voltage telemetry. A simple timer just does not work when you fly so much a zero or low throttle. Just this week I flew my Conscendo for 35 minutes, well past the 5 minute countdown timer, and still had 1/3 of a 1300 3s pack left. If you have a powered sailplane get voltage telemetry! One small issue. The wing bottoms have multiple small, deep, molded notches. No idea why, but now filled with spackling. Can't wait to get this airplane maidened! Anybody in the market for a Night Radian? I might be selling mine.
Hah! I was actually in the market for a night radian until I saw this beast! Never flown a glider before but I really want to gun it and start with this
I've had 3 of these. I buy one about every decade. First and second were both pure gliders. They are 20 and 30 years old. The 3rd is over 10 years old and is an old school 540 motor and uses an old rc car battery. Guess it's time for the new one.
I used to glide my hobbico red hawk around for over an hour in the mornings when the thermals were good and it wasn’t even a glider. I bet I could have that thing up for half the day.
Big gliders do have a definite appeal. My first R/C plane was the Flyzone Calypso, and I think she was the perfect first plane for me. I still have her, but need to replace the elevator servo (was glad I noticed it was stripped during the preflight, instead of after launching her), but she's still in one piece after over 5 years. I also inherited an old Hobbyking BFG2600 a couple of years ago. That 2.6m wingspan really makes for an easy plane to keep track of in the sky!
What a lovely plane. I have never tried Tower Hobbies and I have always been looking for a decent soarer - I have a Ranger 2000 which took me AGES to get balanced and when I finally got it into the air, it flew so fast that I was not experienced enough to keep it under control. This baby looks like it can fly much slower and would suit me better. Hopefully it is on sale in Europe. Best wishes for the baby and greetings from Ireland.
I went ahead and bought this plane and it showed up yesterday. My first impressions from just inspecting it is that it is a very solid and high quality build, all of the mating surfaces are reinforced. I am a little concerned that this plane it too heavy to thermal, but I've seen a video of some one catching a thermal on a calm winter day so 🫰. Thanks for showing us this plane.
when u hand launch launch downwards or at least straight ahead rather then straight into the stall....if it is going to fly it will gather speed from a straight ahead launch....well done ..great couple
WOW..I forgot about Tower Hobbies! SWEET glider and honest MAIDEN!! Abby got better "sound" when she thought she didn't get the glider in the shot than in the second go around!! Must be hard to video "SOUND"!! I just close my eyes and listen!! GREAT review Saylors, HONESTLY!! 💟👍😘
i'm glad that asw 28 is written on the plane, otherwise nobody would recognize this plane as a asw28. i think the engineer of this plan has never seen a 28 before.
Just bought it off your link, and the AR637T to go with. I had an older ASW28 from a different company but it was a dog. Why the AR637T? I DO NOT hand launch anything without SAFE and prefer SAFE for sailplane landings. Also, if you set up SAFE for slow flight and coordinated turns with rudder mix it makes power off thermaling a joy to fly. On my switch change sounds I set up all sailplane SAFE sounds on as "Thermal mode A" so the other guys at the field don't know I'm actually using SAFE! LOL
Thanks Hoosier! That’s awesome of you 😁 You’ll love this thing, especially knowing you like gliders! Let’s bring back even more with Tower and be sure to spread the word that they’ve released something new finally! You know, I considered setting up SAFE on this but just thought being so large I don’t think I’d need it, but I love your idea of mixing in rudder with SAFE on. Might have to try that if I can find time to set it up, guessing it’s not very difficult. Also love your “sneaky” idea of your audible notifications while in that flight mode 😅 Your secret is “safe” with me! 😂😬😉😎⚓️
the 637T is a perfect glider receiver too, because it has telemetry and vario, which are key for thermaling and fine tuning your flights. I suggest you follow Manny's guide to setting up a glider. The ASW 28 is almost the same as an SZD-54 and should work great. th-cam.com/video/vNa2o1YU-VA/w-d-xo.html
I set up 3 flight modes on my NX 8 transmitter. SAFE, AS3X and no gyros (just in case the gyros glitch). The aileron/rudder mix is active only in SAFE mode, and turned off in the other two. If left on in AS3X that mix really makes a mess out of any aerobatics! A little playing around with the rudder deflection gives a nice turn that works regardless of rate selected.
Cool, I'll try that on the ASW28. I live just east of Champaign IL. FedEx just sent me a notice that it will get here tomorrow. I get overnight delivery from HH/Tower at no charge. 🙂
BTW, I'm the guy who loaned you a hemostat to get the rudder ball joint connected on your HH Commander at the Muncie Fun Fly this past summer. You were also my observer on a flight when my Timber X landed itself safely after a radio glitch. I won a Commander at the club Christmas party but have not flown it yet. Looks like a very fun airplane. In fact, as of tomorrow, I will have 4 airplanes to maiden this year. Been a really great winter in the basement.
Your approach should have been on half flaps first then go to full if needed. Think of Flaps or spoilers as your throttle in a sailplane. That trick I learned from flying the real thing. I do realize it was a Maiden flight and you were still learning about its characteristics. Nice looking plane.
The thing with gliders is if flaps are full on landing they may catch on the ground, and tear loose or break, especially if you ground spin. I usually flip them to half or off just before contact.
Volantex ASW28 is $155 for PNP (compared to Tower Hobbies $250), has 2.5m wingspan (2m here), and most importantly, flying weight of 1000g (2000g here).
It's a nice model and it seems to fly well but it's not a scale ASW 28, the wing chord is way to big and the fuselage is too chubby :) Still prefer the Volantex, it's just gorgeous :D
I thought it looked quite a bit more robust than the Volantex version. I thought they might be going for a Fox style aerobatic, but those wings arent suitable for that either.
That 7yr old video is hilarious 😆🤣 Nate looks like a teenager in high school 🤣Nothing wrong with looking young though. Hell I wish I looked like a teenager 7yrs ago I was 41 😆🤣🤣
Wish you would have flown this as a glider not like a normal powered plane as this doesn’t show how it performs as a unpowered glider just as a standard plane
I did fly it like a glider, briefly. I also demonstrated this plane flying in a fun manner. It brought me joy to fly it like this, and if I only flew it “like a glider” then others would complain that I didn’t show what it was capable of. Actually, I can show you how it glides: take a screen shot of it as it passes and stare at that image for 45 minutes while holding the picture up above your head so your neck is at a 90 degree angle. When you feel as though you are ready to pass out, you can stop doing this. Lol. There. Gliders. 😂😅😁⚓️
Very good price even without the discount codes!! I always chuckle when I see these gliders it lookes like they added some wings to one of those hand held cordless mixers, the ones that "Can accually whip water" haha
I think my arrows szd 54 is a way better plane. You have that one too. How can you compare the two. I know, you need a warm day for some lift. Anyway, thanks for sharing
It does give me the warm fuzzies, and am happy to see a new bird with the logo. I always loved the company and I hope they retain a level of independence from Horizon Hobby. I recently picked up a Tower Kaos, I know it is not their original design but I'm happy their name is on it. I'd also love to see more balsa available from them, the EP/GP is cool to me since I still like to fly glow.
I still have my first Tower Hobbies transponder and receiver. It's about 25 + years old lol I think the crystals went bad? Been thinking about buying some and see if I can get it working again other than that I never had a problem with it not one glitch ever and I used it on 3 different nitro planes and the guy I got it from flew helicopters with it and never had a problem.
I absolutely love Tower Hobbies! That is so awesome Erric! We are really glad to see them release something new and exclusive after this break they’ve taken. Woot!! 👍😁😎⚓️
You just buy new blades and replace them. And what you should've done is to go flaps up instead. Stall tendencies, slow straight forward and it gets flying again within a few meters. At least if it's anything like most gliders. For short landings go full crow/ butterfly, Flap full down and both ailerons full up. And you can keep the motor on a switch if you intend to use it as a glider. Motor full on for climbing, then off for gliding and chasing lift. No need for throttle.
Small question regarding hand launches: do you use Safe for hand launching or do you turn everything off regarding stabilization ? How much % throttle do you use ? I have handlaunched more then 100 times with my sailplanes but have also destroyed 2 planes in launch because they just go straight up and then turnover to put the nose in the ground. Only two reasons that i can think of why this happens: both disaster launches were in Safe mode that made the plane climb too fast and second reason was that in both case there was very little wind to carry the plane. So curious to your opinion on the matter.
Ohhhh and btw i was the guy that got soooo mad at rc planes i threw a tantrum like a toddler and said i quit. Im unsubbing and running away. Lol. Im still here. Im ok. I found my passy and got my ba ba. I still fly. It was a lousy week, i wrecked all my planes in one week. It happens but my luck improved again. Lol
That was me that made the comment. SAFE used for sailplane launches is almost foolproof. Landings too. It's just way too easy to hit a wingtip and cartwheel when you have the combination of long wings and no landing gear. I gave up letting my ego get in the way and have not broken a sailplane since.
Maidened mine today and not really happy with this plane. Hand launching it is very tricky since it climbs too fast and also in flight i found it an unstable plane. Flew it back to back with the Eflite Conscendo Evolution and that plane is much better in every respect.
I wish it had a scale wing. This wing span is too short and the aspect ratio is too low (wide chord with low span ratio). It will provide some maneuverability advantages but glide ratio and thermal soaring will suffer. Tower Hobbies, if you’re listening can you offer a scale wing option? With spoilers?
I thinnk the planform looks good. Scale does not work for models. The Reynolds numbers do not scale. It just needs to be much lighter. I wonder what airfoil it uses?
Yes, Horizon does own Hobbico (Tower Hobbies) but this is actually a new plane, exclusive to tower with Tower branded electronics. Cost is down compared to what this would be if it were Eflite 👍😁😎⚓️
We purchased some fantastic things from Tower Hobbies back in the day! Sadly though, they weren’t a “good” enough company to exist any further than when Horizon purchased them. I don’t think Horizon purchasing killed them, I know they killed themselves (very sadly) and Horizon saw an opportunity to purchase all of the brands under the Hobbico umbrella before someone else did. They saw the potential with brands like Axial and Arrma and have been heavily focussed on them for a while now. However, it looks and feels like we might start seeing more love with Tower, which would be great because they can offer cheaper planes but still retain the quality that we see in Eflite planes! I mean, where else can you buy a 2.0m plane for something like $220 with our coupon code? Not too bad! 😁⚓️
You shouldn't feel old Nate.... Most of the inflation has been in the last couple years, in that short period your money is worth just over half what it was
Fam Jay!! Ugh, I forgot it was Friday 13th with all of this excitement happening with two new airplanes releasing back to back and the baby boy being due any day now!! Whew! Exciting times! 👍😁😎⚓️
I have broken a ton of props. It happens. I just did it on a tail dragger, forgot to flare on final, knicked the prop, snap, then did it again same day. Im stupid
Keepin' my old (H/King) Volantex ASW 28!!! It's been WELL cared for!! MAKE SURE: Horizontal stab is Securely attached at the Vertical stab... It's a weak spot that must have cyano, etc. to keep that from loosening. (Tower Hobbies lost out By price inflating Nate...let's observe)😎👌👆🇺🇸
Volantex makes an ASW 28, not sure that HK sells it, or anything like this anymore. This looks more robust than the Volantex version. I'm not sure whether thats good or not.
Yeah I am not a fan of HobbyKing these days.. and there are a lot of people that feel the same, sadly. They are super hit and miss on QC. Their customer service is non existent. They “trick you” with low prices then hit you with nasty shipping! And on top of that, I’ve had boxes, yes plural, come from HK that were beyond destroyed. Agreed that I’m unaware of them selling an ASW-28 currently, and am also aware of the Volantex version possibly sold there? Volantex is not a HK brand. They are okay. Probably somewhere we’ll under Horizon and Tower, under Arrows and FMS, but probably above Dynam, HK and Freewing (Motion). This is just our opinion, as long as you are enjoying the hobby that’s all that matters! 👍😁⚓️
I would have said the SZD was my favorite, before this came along. Nearly the same price, but you get 4S capabilities on the Tower plane over the Arrows which is 3S. That’s a huge difference, if you want to climb quickly. Bear in mind, we have coupon codes in our description box to get the Tower ASW price down. And if you are a super saver or whatever it’s called (costs $10for the entire year) you’ll save an extra $10 I believe. Also, they give you $10 store credit on your birthday, so it’s an absolute no-brainer. Of which I make no money on, lol. It’s just a really good deal! Anyways, hope that helps! 👍😁😎⚓️
I love this plane This will officially be my first glider. Do you think I can progress from the blue Twin Otter to this ASW 28? Cause I’m pretty much gonna do exactly that.
So you can really fly it for 45 minutes? I remember my little .49 glow plug two channel airplane could do about 8 minutes on gas, then if I found vultures flying around I found hang out with them for a long time, I think the most I did was 45 minutes and I was getting into the clouds. Kinda want to get this glider to get back to flying.
It obviously depends on conditions. I've done around a half-hour or so with the Calypso, when conditions were good and I found a nice thermal. I could probably have flown longer, but decided to go ahead and bring it in. One great thing about electrics like this over a similar gas powered model, is that you can climb to a decent altitude in a short time, kill the throttle, and if you don't find a thermal, you can run the motor up to climb again without having to land.
switch it from lipo to a liion 4s. and you can most likely get 45 minutes, on just the battery cruising around. ASW 28 has such low wing loading they make for great FPV cruisers.
There are slope gliders with no power at all that with good steady wind conditions can fly as long as you like. In fact the 2.5M Volantex ASW28 comes with both a folding prop/spinner for powered and a plain nose cone that can be used for unpowered flights. It uses smaller batteries too... 2S or max 3S, 1500 to 2200 max. Not so much with "tribute" planes like the ASW28, modelled after a real glider, there are other high efficiency sail planes that people are customizing to get 1 and 2 hour flights. Flights so long they program a route, engage autopilot and go have breakfast!
No, it is not. The Volantex is larger, 2.5 meter wingspan. It also uses a nearly indestructible plastic fuselage and can only accommodate 2S or 3S. It also might cost less, depending upon where you buy it. Hobby King has the ASW28 version Ii PNF version for $155, I think.
Does anyone know if my Spectrum DXS will bind with this glider? Sorry for the silly question. I am relatively new to the hobby and just wanted to make sure I don’t need to buy another radio. Thank you so much for the amazing video. This is exactly the glider I am looking for.
It looks like this does NOT come with a receiver so the question of "will it bind" doesn't make sense. Get a receiver that works with your transmitter and install it in the craft.
I agree; the problem is that if it were carbon-skinned low-density foam like a high-performance F5B sailplane it would cost triple or more. The best thermal all-foam glider was the original Radian with Paul Naton's mods. That 2-channel + throttle glider would thermal well and could even perform well in a 2-meter class contest. Pity the designers don't understand that light wing loading is important. All that said, this might be a good slope glider when the winds up.
Nice plane but i rather spend a few bucks more and have real hinges on the moving surfaces - sure its faster and cheaper to produce planes with these foam-hinges but i do not like it.
@@coriscotupi i have a cheap Bushmule from Hobby king and it has real hinges and i do also have composit gliders that uses the covering as hinges - that is just as bad and i can't even make the flaps and ailerons work as one surface because the flaps cant move up. Too many manufacturers are too lazy to make quality products nowadays.

Just got one of these. Haven't flown it yet. Added crow ( air brakes) was easy as I have a Tactic 650 transmitter. God bless and keep the faith .
Is crow similar to flaps?
@@FalconFlight747 the ailerons pop up and act as spoilers with the flaps down at the same time

Oh wow that’s smart
Can the NX6 do that
@@FalconFlight747 not sure, I'm still rocking a DX6i
I went ahead and bought this plane and it showed up yesterday.
Glad to see Tower Hobbies again, too! Thanks for donating the prop to make a better video for youtube audience :-(
I love gliders. God bless you guys
You forgot to show how the battery did on that flight! 😅😅😅😅Thumbs-up 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
when u hand launch launch downwards or at least straight ahead rather then straight into the stall....if it is going to fly it will gather speed from a straight ahead launch....well done ..great couple
Doesn't have spoilers that is what it needs so you don't lose airspeed but can lose altitude.
Nice looking glider ! And finally a canopy with out pilot ! Really like this glider ! And they look like a high quality build ! Love that !👍✈️
i'm glad that asw 28 is written on the plane, otherwise nobody would recognize this plane as a asw28. i think the engineer of this plan has never seen a 28 before.
Why? ⚓️
Very nice! You guys just keep coming with all the good content !
Thanks 260! 👍😁😎⚓️
I ordered my very first RC plane from a tower hobbies magazine 31 years ago. The Avistar!
That would be a tower in that little circle...lol...Cool Glider !
Short tower, lol but that makes sense! Haha, thanks for swinging by!! 👍😁😎⚓️
I like it. i maidend my fox 3000 yesterday and im a glider fan now . Only thing this plane is missing is the catchy name and insignia.
I bought a 3 channel radio from Tower Hobbies way back in 1978.
You guys really need to find a slope to test fly the gliders.
I have a volantex Asw. It may be lighter but glide ratio is abysmal and quality is marginal
Beautiful glider
Absolutely! Everyone needs at least one glider in their collection of planes ✈️ 👍😁😎⚓️

Absolute Cody! 👍😁😎⚓️
Lol. There. Gliders. 😂😅😁⚓️
@@TheRcSaylors I get that it would be boring to see it just glide the whole video but as it’s a glider wanted to see more how it preformed as a glider
I’ll try to do more of that in a follow up video 😁⚓️
Looks great!!

Love your videos. Not sure why this isn’t called an ASW27? The ASW28’s do not have flaps but the 27’s do.
I no for a fact that gliders do well on grass landings you would be better off not landing it on the runway!
Woot!! 👍😁😎⚓️
Like to see these gliders flown from a slope to show their soaring capabilities.
Awesome glider Let's Go 🔥
Am I the only one that would like to have a pilot in that empty cockpit?
Small question regarding hand launches: do you use Safe for hand launching or do you turn everything off regarding stabilization ? How much % throttle do you use ? I have handlaunched more then 100 times with my sailplanes but have also destroyed 2 planes in launch because they just go straight up and then turnover to put the nose in the ground. Only two reasons that i can think of why this happens: both disaster launches were in Safe mode that made the plane climb too fast and second reason was that in both case there was very little wind to carry the plane.
So curious to your opinion on the matter.
love gliders
I think anyone that flies RC planes should own at least one 👍😎⚓️
Ohhhh and btw i was the guy that got soooo mad at rc planes i threw a tantrum like a toddler and said i quit. Im unsubbing and running away. Lol. Im still here. Im ok. i feel youe pain, ive crashed everyrhing i ever had foe ine reason or another😂
What a glider👍
Oh yeah!! 👍😁💯😎⚓️
I saw a comment about hand launching on SAFE
That was me that made the comment. SAFE used for sailplane launches is almost foolproof. Landings too. It's just way too easy to hit a wingtip and cartwheel when you have the combination of long wings and no landing gear. I gave up letting my ego get in the way and have not broken a sailplane since.
Maidened mine today and not really happy with this plane. Hand launching it is very tricky since it climbs too fast and also in flight i found it an unstable plane. Flew it back to back with the Eflite Conscendo Evolution and that plane is much better in every respect.
Almost looks like the same wing attachment as the FMS ASW-17 with the exception of screw mounts instead of FMS crappy clip points.
Is it a Clipped Wing Asw 28?Looks like almost half of the wingspan is missing😢
Horizon hobby owns Tower hobbies and the product line is the same.
Yes, Horizon does own Hobbico (Tower Hobbies) but this is actually a new plane, exclusive to tower with Tower branded electronics. Cost is down compared to what this would be if it were Eflite 👍😁😎⚓️
@@TheRcSaylors Tower hobby was a great store until Horizon purchased it.

Hi nate and Abby I watched a lot of your videos I'm wondering how to get into rc plane and helicopter reviews
Nice glider, I don’t know about the skids they get ground down.
Yeah I really like HobbyKings version of that plane about a hundred bucks cheaper.
But they charge more for shipping, don’t they?
Volantex makes an ASW 28, not sure that HK sells it, or anything like this anymore. This looks more robust than the Volantex version. I'm not sure whether thats good or not.
@@TheRcSaylors HobbyKing wanted fifty bucks to ship a 60" balsa ARF from California to Arkansas.
They didn't get my money.
Nothing on this model resembles an ASW28 other than it has wings etc.
Tower ASW 28 or Arrows SZD-54 and why?
@@TheRcSaylors It helps. Thanks for the info. I got the Arrows when you featured that one but why not have two 2.0 Motor Gliders.

I love this plane
This will officially be my first glider.
Do you think I can progress from the blue Twin Otter to this ASW 28?
Cause I’m pretty much gonna do exactly that.
Sure
can you set a flight plan to a location beyond its communication distance and then it returns to your location ?
With a different receiver/ GPS module in this, yes it can be done!
Who makes it for Tower? It looks FMS ish. And yes I remember the delivery of the Tower Flyer’s.
Who's the leader in the industry? Who owns Tower. Hobbyzone. Hobbico, etc etc. Etc?
" Horizon Hobby" made in China.
Does any company sell complete trainer kits with radio, batteries esc, charger and plane anymore?
Absolutely
So this I the same as the Volantexrc asw28?
No, it is not.
The Volantex is larger, 2.5 meter wingspan. It also uses a nearly indestructible plastic fuselage and can only accommodate 2S or 3S. It also might cost less, depending upon where you buy it. Hobby King has the ASW28 version Ii PNF version for $155, I think.
Tower coming back?
Not as long as Hanger Nine owns them.
Gotta buy me one 👍😎 nice video.
This would be good if it were about 1/2 the weight. As is, it is another brick glider. Why can't someone do it right?
^ +1.
I agree, they tend to rip apart with age.
