This is the transition era for them. Just the year prior they were still doing their young punk slacker phase. You can tell Billie is really owning the stage here. I feel like that’s why they struggled coming up with new material during this time. They attempted making similar but it just wasn’t working out. They needed something different. You could really see the difference in their performance after “American Idiot”. Here you could see the start of that change.

And if 95% of your playing is at home sitting, playing standing up is hard as well. And he probably had no time to warm up his fingers, nobody out of 50.000 people can be certain to be pulled on stage even everybody knows one random kid is likely to get the chance. So fair play to that kid, he messed up a few parts but on a punk show nobody cares

Haha I watched that show! It was my first festival, my big brother took me with him. I think they played on saturday around 4 pm or so. My brother and I had so much fun just moshing around. At one point he lost his glasses and all the people around us stopped moshing to help him find them. Some guy 20 feet away found them and they were returned intact! I clearly remember Joel putting on that crown for King for a day. A beautiful memory for me ❤

I was 2 when this happened and I'm 17 now. I remember my uncle used to play green day to me when I was little and I've literally grown up listening to them :) They are such an amazing band.
Its crazy to think i was 6 months old when they played this concert ahah I'm now 15 and i listen to green day pretty crazy just shows they will live on through many generations

These injuries were literally a guy banged his knee and got stepped on, and when he fell he got another girl knocked over and she got her hand stepped on so she had a small cut on her hand.. Neither of them were seriously hurt. Just a bump/bruise, which is probably the most mild thing that can happen to you at a 90's early 2000's punk concert lol.. Stopping crowd surfing at a punk concert is like asking people at a Pantera concert to stop moshing lol.. Thats the whole damn point! These are mostly all willfully participating adults out to have a good time. If you woke up with bumps and bruises, you know you had a good time! This is likely what annoyed Billie. I know Billie does speak some German, so I think he knew exactly what the guy was saying.

Honestly, a lot of bands should watch this video and see how they should interact with their audience. Been to lots of shows where they get up on stage, do their set and leave. This makes the show so much more personable and enjoyable. Lots of improvising and bringing the crowd into the performance.
