    November 2021 UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that okra is actually not an nightshade vegetable. Okra is in the Malvaceae family of plants, not Solanaceae. Thank you to Jannelle J for that well-needed correction!

    A big thank you for this video, I am spanish and tomato and peppers are a basic ingredient for 95% of all dishes. I will give your recipe a try. I was just not making the recipe with the nightshade and the taste wasn’t the same.

    For salsa verde, this is what I do.
    Raw and charred red onion, yellow onion, garlic, and radish.
    Once the vegetables are charred, I add all that and avocado (optional but delicious), a TON of cilantro, and lots of lime juice. Charring the veggies help add an umami flavor that is missing from no tomatoes, and the raw onions and raw garlic add a "spice" to it. I've brought it to family gatherings and everyone loves it! No one knows theres no tomatoes! My mom who has always been actually allergic to tomatoes likes it too!

    Fantastic! I make mango, radish, purple onion salsa with salt and pepper and a dash of garlic. Love the taco spice mix! Couldn’t find one I’ve liked so far and will give your mix a try! I also want to share that lime juice/rind helps a lot too… I do understand that some people may be sensitive to citrus with histamine intolerance, so throwing it out there for those who aren’t sensitive.

    U better make those beans mushy first with the food processor or use garbanzo too. Make a paste of it and apply and everything else will stick to it in your taco and won't fall. Use trumpet mushrooms 🍄 😋. They're delicious

    Thank you for your cucumber salsa recipe. I would like to try it sometime. I have been nightshade free for a while now, but I haven't been too successful with salsa subs.

    Hi! Just came across the idea to substitute tart cherries for tomatoes; forget cranberries. I am searching for tart cherries, either frozen or dried. If the dried can only be found sweetened, I will rinse.

    What are your symptoms eating Night shades?

    • @kimberlyreitsma
      @kimberlyreitsma  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not entirely sure what my symptoms are since I have a bunch of food sensitivities, but I am pretty sure nightshades contribute to my acne and joint pain problems. Thanks for your question! :)

    • @ginitaprofitt4065

      My symptoms are pain all over the body. Watermelon is a burping feast and nightshades specially eggplant and artichoke will make you feel like you had food poisoning. Not fun.

    How about white pepper?

    • @kimberlyreitsma
      @kimberlyreitsma  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Both black pepper and white pepper are not nightshades. They can be used interchangeably - white pepper is just less potent in my opinion. :)

      Actually, I tried making an enchilada sauce (using a similar veggie combo), adding cumin, marjoram, garlic, white pepper, oregano, a touch of cardamom and cocoa and liguid smoke. It turned out pretty good! The white pepper was the key to giving it spice without tasting like black pepper. Totally surprised me.😊

    Be careful when it comes to mustard because yellow prepared mustard contains paprika which is a nightshade.

    I have never read in two weeks that BLACK pepper is allowed!

    • @kimberlyreitsma
      @kimberlyreitsma  ปีที่แล้ว

      Black pepper is not a nightshade, so if you are just removing nightshades from your diet - you can still consume it. However, if you are following the AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) Diet - which eliminates nightshades along with a host of other foods - then black pepper is not allowed. I hope that helps! :)

      @@kimberlyreitsma yes, please indicate that in your other correction….as your video comes up in an aip search. Thanks for prompt response. Costco wild salmon boxed and beef come with black, etc pepper. Alternative spice list would be helpful to many, also nomato recipes.

    • @kimberlyreitsma
      @kimberlyreitsma  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, I have no control over the search algorithm. This video just contains nightshade-free diet content, not full-blown AIP. Thank you for the suggestions though!

      Onions are not nightshades. Thanks for the question! :)

    • @SingingSealRiana
      @SingingSealRiana 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      no onions(garlic and their likes) are from the same plant family as lilies. Nightshades have no bulbs, and with the exception of potatos, it is the fruit that is eaten.
      the taxonimic name for nightshade is solanum if you want to look it up.
      Peppers, tomatos, tomatillos, physalis, eggplants, potatos, those are the most commenly encountered ones

    Okra is not a night shade.

    • @kimberlyreitsma
      @kimberlyreitsma  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just doubled checked my research and you are correct. Okra is in the Malvaceae family of plants, not Solanaceae. Totally my mistake. Thanks for commenting!
      However, okra does contain solanine, the toxic alkaloid found in nightshades. Perhaps that it is why it makes it onto some lists of nightshade vegetables.
