Cancer took his sight when he was 1, his life when he was 41 (R.I.P.). He got his first guitar when he was 3... taught himself to play with it laying across his lap because he wasn't big enough to play it holding it the conventional way.

He wasn't just a great blues musician, he also played other instruments, including trumpet and I believe piano. He fronted a jazz band as well, in Toronto, owned a club, had a massive collection of Jazz 78s and hosted a show on CBC radio where he would play selections from that collection and talk about the history of the music.

I once met Jeff at his club in Toronto. He insisted that people just call him Jeff. He was friendly, gracious and humble, just a tremendous human being. You really couldn't help but love the guy. His passing hit me pretty hard and I usually don't react to celebrity deaths because people die every day. The only celebrities whose deaths hit me hard were Jeff' Healey, Walter Gretzky (I actually knew him) and Robin Williams.
Godspeed Jeff, wherever you are, I hope that you're in perpetual bliss.

I was sad about Gordon Lightfoot, but it was bittersweet, because he died at a good age having really done it all, and his last interviews showed him to be pretty ready for it, he knew it was his time. Jeff Healey died too young.

A friend i went to school with - her dad's brother and wife adopted him and several other children. She said everyone loved them as if they were blood. Jeff had a silly sense of humor and was the "life of the party at family reunions" (yes she said exactly that) she also said that he's very missed and since the parents started passing they don't get together like they all used to. Sadly i see that with everyone's family's

Jeff Healey appears in ROAD HOUSE with the late Patrick Swayze. Swayze plays a bouncer in a very rough bar, in a town run by a wealthy ass hole. It's an awesome movie with great fights, hot women, monster trucks, and awesome music featuring Healey and Swayze (who also had a good voice). The movie sound track is one of the best ever made.
Swayze: "You play pretty good for a blind, white boy."
Healey: "And I thought you'd be taller."

  • @-R.Gray-

The host of the show, saxist David Sanborn, bass player Marcus Miller, and drummer Omar Hakim have all appeared on countless albums. You might know the pianist on this song, Dr.John, from his big 70's hit "(I've been in the ) Right Place, (but it must have been the) Wrong Time". He started out on guitar, but had to switch to piano when somebody shot off part of one of his left hand fingers. The song about seeing the light is kind of ironic considering Healey's blindness. Towards the end he got more interested in Dixieland music, often played the trumpet.

I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this unquestionably unique musician. 🤗 I personally had the incredible fortune to experience him performing live, up close, over several nights near the start of his legendary career, and I'd never even heard of him an hour before he touched the guitar on that memorable first evening!
Mid/late '80s, Victoria BC, early evening on a warm summer Thursday: Me and some of the boys headed out to a local meat market / pick up bar that usually had a DJ. (🤭 Hey, I was young, well, late 20s, and there would likely be pretty girls there! 😂). When we arrived, we were perplexed to discover there was a lineup to get in, with posters advertising a live performer (not usual) debuting that night, with praises by the likes of B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. So, what the hell, we waited in line.
Once we got in we sat at a table right by the dance floor, about 15 feet from a two foot raised stage. After ordering our beer, the band came out, obviously guiding a blind guy. My buddies and I kinda looked at each other quizzically. 🤔 They sat him down in a chair onstage, handed him an electric guitar, which he placed on his lap 😯 ... then, when they started to play ... my world changed ... forever. It was Jeff Healey and his band, before their first album came out: I had never heard of him/them before, but he, specifically, had my attention now.
He proceeded to play the cleanest, most amazing, unbelievable guitar licks I'd ever heard. He played blues, he played rock, he played country, he even played a bit of what sounded like flamenco. He played Hendrix better than Hendrix, he played with his teeth, he played while literally jumping around blind like a mad man. He seemed to be having a religious experience onstage. Despite it being a dance club, NOBODY danced that night. Every person, patrons and staff alike, stood around, hypnotized, with their mouths agape, staring, hardly believing what they were seeing and hearing.
I went back Friday and Saturday, and again three nights the following week, as they were playing a two week gig there. Their first album came out shortly thereafter, and then he was in a movie with Patrick Swayze, and then ... well, I sadly never got to see Jeff Healey perform live again. But I still feel blessed, and I shall never forget how amazing the experience was that first night I saw him play! 😊

I was privileged to see him live in the early 90’s. The man was truly inspiring. Genius. Just genius and raw, pure unadulterated talent. Great reaction. The fact that you get the point about the strap of his guitar speaks volumes. You know your stuff and it shows, and this is a fantastic, genuine show of emotion on your part.

Had cancer in his eyes aged about 1, unfortunately it came back and killed him later in life, but he’s up there as one of the greatest guitarists ever. Check him out in the Patrick Swayze action film “Roadhouse”. His band is the house band in a tough rock and blues night club.

Unfortunately, Jeff left us at just 41 years old due to his illness, corneal cancer. I tell you that the extraordinary musicians who accompanied him were the stable band of the program The Night Music, hosted by the great saxophonist David Sanborn and were: Dr. John on piano, a blues legend; Marcus Miller on bass, one of the best in the world who also plays saxophone, guitar and keyboards, producer (he was the producer of the last Miles Davis albums), arranger and conductor and on drums the great Omar Hakim, one of the greatest of current jazz-rock, Sting's first drummer in his solo stage and who played with "everyone": Weather Report, Chick Corea, Carly Simon, Mariah Carey, Dire Straits, David Bowie, Madonna, etc.

Jeff didn't teach himself to play the guitar, he was taught the standard way. However he never felt completely comfortable playing that way while not being able to see, so he developed the method of playing that you see where he plays with the guitar on his lap. He was actually playing the guitar at the end with his teeth, not his tongue. He lost his eyes at around 2 years old due to cancer, which later in life was his cause of death. I think that covers most of your questions. Now IMO best live performance of all time is Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, Live at Pulse. My vote for the best guitar solo of all time.

As always, really REALLY enjoyed your reaction. Jeff Healey was really an incredible musician, and his live performances were stunning, even if, for my personal taste, he kinda "overdid" a little bit the "show" part, you know... Standing up, jumpin' around, that kind of stuff. 🙂
I know it was "good for the show" for most audiences, but I've never been that kind of spectator. 😁
Now, if you want to check another INCREDIBLE musician who left us WAAAAY too early, you could check up the good old Stevie Ray Vaughan. In particular, there are a few live videos that I think would just blow your mind away: the "sound check" video, which is described as: ""Stevie just waking up then warming up." 😁😁
I'd sell all my relatives to play that way just "waking up then warming up". No, I'd sell them all just for playing HALF that good in ANY moment in my life, even just ONCE 😂.
And then there are more videos of him in concert... I'd suggest his cover of "Voodoo Child (slight return)", by Jimi Hendrix... Likely the best cover I've ever heard of that song. 🤩
But pretty much ANY video of him performing live will do. 🙂
See you at next reaction! 🙂

Some of the things he does when playing almost appear impossiable. Ithink SRV is the man, but jeff has a nastier meaner sound. And man he is probaly as good and jeezz he's fast. I'm speechless

The reason the live performances of the artist from the 70s 80s and 90s were so much then the artist of today. Is because performing live is where they cut their teeth and got noticed and broke through to their record deals. Today it's done from the artists bedrooms on TH-cam and tictoc.

Yeah taught himself to play from the age of 4 years old, became blind after having cancer at the age of one, amazing guitarist & singer, he appeared in the movie Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze as a guitarist performer. Sad loss to the music industry & Fans when he died in 2008. Other awesome songs he's done I highly recommend to check out are
    Hoochie Coochie Man,
    Roadhouse Blues,
I think I Love You To Much,
When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky,
    Confidence Man,
    How Blue Can You Get,
All awesome ones of Jeff Healey I think you'll Love.😎❤️👌

I would have suggested Stevie Ray Vaughn "Texas Flood" Live at the El Macambo . For the start of your journey. Maybe I'm cruel but. You'd be hard pressed to find a better performance. Except when Jeff and Stevie play together.
