Lately, your videos were talking about culture and differences between Malaysia & other countries. Seems like there are a lot of curiosity. My suggestion for the next video content, bring a few of your malaysian friends together, and make a Q&A session with them. It is better if you have a different race of friends. Ask them about Malaysia. Hope you are able to be Malaysian too..😊

Malaysians do not like the heat because most of them have to enter their workplaces or return from rest hour back to their workplaces with sweat. Ichang and Jimmy do not have to care about sweating, that is why you are 'resilient' to heat. It is about practicality. Malaysians are also resilient to heat, but the more they are under the heat, then they will get darker complexion (especially for Malays). Just go to rice producing states like Kedah and Perlis and see the rice farmers there as well as the fishermen. I do not think Ichang and Jimmy have a lot of experience with the Malaysia that they assume to know. You must continue your travels, not only for food, but to experience lifestyles such as homestays in the kampung, toil in the heat of the paddy fields, follow fishermen to their daily catches, experience trekking in Taman Negara, meet with more Malaysians in their homes and talk with them about the things you have assumed since your burnout. So far you have been accustomed to living with urban, metropolitan Malaysians in KL. However, their mall culture is not representative of other Malaysians. The more you travel and being not in your comfort zone, the better. Now you are enjoying your comfort zone by eating donuts or whatever you like in malls. Challenge yourselves as a couple and be more adventurous.

Actually kan iChang, it's not that Malaysians aren't fussy about food.
Most of the people who live in KL don't originally come from KL. Most of us migrated here from elsewhere. So when we eat at a shopping mall for instance, our expectations is for mall-level mall.
If we were to eat, say mee rebus, in KL, we won't have the same expectations as we would have for the ones we have in our hometown. That's probably why you think Malaysians aren't fussy, you only met KL people lol 😂

There’s quite a number of theme park in Malaysia. If you ask Malaysians, most would probably say the same name. Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park (Indoor and Outdoor), Sunway Lagoon, Berjaya Time Square (Indoor) and Legoland.
But there’s also ESCAPE Penang/Petaling Jaya , District 21 (IOI mall Putrajaya) for adventure. And personally I think there’s more Water Theme Park in Malaysia rather than adventure park. Malaysians love Water Theme Park to wash away the heat 😂.
My best waterpark list are Sunway Lagoon (KL), A’Famosa Water Theme Park (Melaka), Lost World of Tambun (Perak), Desaru Coast Water Park / Legoland (Johor), Splash Mania (Selangor), i-City Water Park (Selangor), Splash Out (Langkawi) and many more. From big to small size, there’s too many water park here. 😂 and lots of it combine with other activities too like adventure park, mini zoo or camping. Maybe you guys can try it once.

Also, i think the reason why there's more donuts than kuehs in mall is cause donuts last longer once you prepare it cause of all the sugar thats coating it. Whereas kuehs mostly use alot of ingredients that will go bad quicker like santan. Plus point.. i think donuts are easier to make than kuehs especially when you need just one base donut and you can pipe a bunch of different filling or put various topping.. compared to kueh where it's all different and takes alot of effort to make >

Tbh, we are not that sensitive to heat. It's more like we prefer air-conditioning more. At least, that's how it is for me.
If I don't have air-conditioning, I can live just fine. Just give me a fan.
But if there are option for air-condition, that's what I will choose.
Especially for Muslim women who need to cover themselves. It can be very hot and sweaty under the sun. It can be very2 uncomfortable.
So, being in air-condition help me to solve that problem.
Going to Mall does become a weekend activity for families because it's tend to be near and don't need much preparation.
We do love to travel but it takes too much time to prepare for the travel. Malaysian people rarely travel lightly so it take too long to prepare
Especially for big families. My sister has 5 children and trying to travel far with 5 children take too much time and effort. Not to mention, quite costly.
So, on weekend, I go with her and her children to jalan2 and eat in the shopping mall. Children won't get too fussy since they did not feel hot and sweaty.
If we do get long weekend, then we might plan for travelling out of states and so on.

Fact about Malaysia's Heavy Rain :
Malaysia's soil actually not as fertile as our neighbour countries (example Thailand) because of Heavy Rain. Heavy rain causing 'bleaching' to our soil and make it too acidic.
    About traditional house:
Wooden traditional house also has huge risk, in term of termite (anai-anai). Lots of old houses fell to ruin because of termites.

It is so coincidence that my British Pakistani friend was just commenting 2 days ago about how Malaysians are so afraid of sunlight and heat. Her children are very active in sports like many British students . She is also an international school teacher and she could not understand why sports lessons at her school are usually canceled on “very” hot days when students in Middle East of even much hotter weather are sweating out in sport activities. Lol! She just couldn’t understand Malaysians . And the funny thing is many Malaysians who are afraid of the heat, escape to the cold temperature rooms but are covering themselves with sweaters, fashionable leather clothes and scarves in the malls as though Malaysia is a cold country and dressing up for winter . I was shocked to find out one day that my friend’s kid sleeps with very low temperature yet with ceiling fan roaring on top at high speed and snuggles comfortably in thick comforter. I suspect many Malaysians enjoy snuggling under thick comforter too . All these air conditioners are actually emitting heat outside and raising temperatures in Malaysia that anyone who wants to live with open windows have to bear the heat that pumps out from their neighbors’ aircond. Just so impossible as I found out esp in terrace housing. Most Architects in Malaysia are also not designing house suitable for tropical country but to keep it aesthetic and not practical, more for their pockets and creating houses that need to use air conditioners . 😢 Shame on the developers.

you hit the nail on the head. hotel rooms that provide thick duvets...what?? so much wastage of resources. people dressed in thick clothing in shopping or offices or trains with freezing aircon . so short sighted , exactly like you said hot air pumped out from aircons are contributing to rising temperatures. its so stupid.

My personal observation about the current weather is that as a Malaysian, our bodies are able to feel when the temperature is really rising / really hot than usual. So we don't really melt in the sun but we adapt and try to avoid too much heat which is quite dangerous especially nowadays because of global warming. Even since a few months back the Ministry of Health has adviced to wear loose clothing not only for public but school children because of the heat wave.. In fact I saw FaceBook friends in Japan and Korea that they too are also facing hot weather (they are Japanese and Korean).
Correct me if I am wrong - skin colour plays a part when it comes to deflecting sun rays. That's what I learned in science class in high school. White or fairer colours are able to deflect sun rays much better than dark colours. Still having said that the sun rays are no joking matter especially nowadays. We have to be smart about this. So everyone please try to stay in the shades or dress loosely and drink lots of water and bring water wherever you go!
PS - Jimmy, every time I see you videos I always wonder are you 100% Japanese?? lol... I mean you look mixed with Thai or Vietnamese.. iChang definitely looks Japanese :) .. Anyway, great video.. Have FUN!! Konbanwa...

    • @joeytan88
      @joeytan88 ปีที่แล้ว

Dark colors actually absorb light more than light colors, not deflect.
Melanin pigments that darken human skin were evolved to dissipate the harmful UV radiation that can damage skin cells.

About selling the kueh in the mall, imo i think it is because of the price. Traditional homemade kueh is cheap and if you want to sell in the mall with the high rent, the price will go high. People would prefer to buy it outside ❤

On that Malaysians’ resilience towards heat topic: I notice your observation is mostly based on the people living in the city where air conditioning is available almost everywhere. Come to the rural areas, you will see children play under the hot sun. Houses in rural areas do not have air-cond mostly. The electricity bill is too much for low-income households.
Perhaps you have experienced winter so you appreciate the hot weather. It’s not like we Malaysians can’t tolerate heat, we have to deal with heat all year long, so if there’s any chance of avoiding it, we take it. Plus, recently Malaysians avoid the sun due to the heat wave warning.
Constructions with modern architecture are booming all over the country. Remember Putrajaya? In that one video you can see all the buildings that are considerably modern. The technologies used to fight corrosion & rusts are pretty solid now.

Fine I'll accept that. But what I don't understand is why the AC has to be set so damn low wei? Then wear thick clotes or jacket because it's cold. Why laa? I always find malls, offices, transportation and restaurants too damn cold.
Ironically the AC actually contributes to increased heat outside. We really have to rethink how we use AC in this country.

Not all Malaysian are 'weak" to the heat/sun. Some of us loves the sun and love doing activities under the sun but usually we will avoid walking outside when it is hot because we dont want to drench our clothes with the sweat and because of the heat, some people do faint if its too hot. Malaysian with fair skin especially women are also avoiding the sun because they do not want to be tanned because of the sun.Thats the main reason.

The key is about setting the right expectations, generally we don't have high expectations in shopping mall food, as long as they are edible by our kids. We also understand that the one-man or family managed stalls may some times drift the taste due to the minor reason like failure of getting one ingredient on that particular day or the chef lost his smell/taste due to flu. Yet being small businesses, we also don't expect them to hold the pride of Michelin star chefs. But true enough, Malaysians are quite tolerant to mistakes and inconsistencies except criticisms, a double-edged sword.

It's RM300 for Malaysian Residents (foreigners with long term visa), RM500 for Foreigners. It has 3 parks, Outdoor Theme Park, Outdoor Waterpark, and Sea Life Aquarium. It's not just tourist there, Malaysians and Singaporeans are there every day, especially weekends. Avoid going on Saturdays, it's crowded. It opens 7 days a week, even on Public Holidays. Actually 30-40 years ago, Malaysian houses and buildings are made to take into consideration the hot-humid weather with ventilation walls, bricks which is breathable (as opposed to concrete blocks), low and wide overhangs etc and the use of ceiling fans are common. But I think maybe from the 80s onwards, buildings are designed like in the West, with more glass panels for commercial buildings and no ventilation blocks or passive design so that people have no choice but to use air-conditioning. It's truly a shame.

In Malaysia when you go out to eat, exploring new places is exciting. Go in with no expectation. If it’s a bad experience, it’s one and done. If it’s ok lah, you can count yourself lucky. If it’s good, it’s a place you want to comeback. If it’s very good, then it’s a place you would recommend actively to your family and friends. Enjoy food-venture in Malaysia,, everyday is an adventure.

Not true about Malaysians not caring about the taste. If the quality goes down, we usually find a better place and boycott the old place.

about the heat thing, yeah most of us or if not half of us Malaysians are sensitive to heat or direct sunglight. But there is a reason for that. I myself, (not to boast) can handle heat quite well comparing with my average buddies. When I "researched", then I find out it's the meal that they are eating daily. It's more or less to balance your meal with the daily and current climate. Myself, although I am Penang born, I do not eat nasi kandar every single day and every single meal for the day.
Maybe it's just me and my family, but too much spice for no reason also not good. Our body need time to absorb all the nutrients and also to counter whatever excessive from the meal we eat. Not to mention enough quality sleep also is needed.
There are people in Malaysia that eats nasi kandar every single day for every single meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) daily and end up getting colon cancer. The portion also contributes to that matter. This is true because this happened to a friend of my arwah (late) father.
Another reason is, most Malaysians nowadays, they maybe sometimes forget, dont know or dont have access to our old ways of eating and living. Back in the old days, yes people do eat spicy food but at a reasonable portions and frequency daily and weekly AND they eat considerable amount of ulam and sayur (salads and vegetable the Malaysian style). Now? everything also you want to pour huge amount of cheese and too little veggies. And yes they tend to do more physical demanding activities.

good video as always, regarding the heat malaysian people especially those who lived in city are used to live with aircondition all the time. in rural areas they rarely used aircond because of the cost and electricity bills is quite high. and malaysian people are also very sensitive about 'sunburn' they want their skin to be whiter because here skin color = beauty

It's the same as what I was thinking. In every k drama I see Koreans always say its very cold outside come inside faster, and even when I was there during winter everyone keep bundled up even in the mall or store, I'm getting hot and took off my winter jacket already but they always stay bundled up eventho they are native there. While for me, I want to feel the coldness on my skin more 😂😂😂

iChang and Jimmy can think about writing about a book on what they discover about Malaysia and sell it to share what love about the country. I think this way, it can expose Malaysia (all the Dragonballs) to the rest of the world and encourage them to explore just as what is done in all of iChang's videos.

Ahaa i enjoyed watching this video, such a relaxing concept haha just a santai lepak, chatting and snacking session. I admit i melt away in heat haha i cannot stand it. Morning heat is fine but once it gets to afternoon heat, i cannot stand it anymore. The heat used to be bearable back then but nowadays it's just dangerous to be exposed to sun for a long time. We love air conditioned places 😆 but we do realize that we have too much malls now. On weekends you will see many people like to go to rivers and lakes to have a picnic. Cause these are cooling places too 🤭

Hahahah fun to hear your observations. Many of us actually don't turn the aircons on all day at home. Sometimes, when it is too hot to sleep, we do turn it in our bedrooms. But when there is a gathering or party, I think we are likely to turn it on for our guests' comfort. But it is so true that we don't like the heat, too sweaty! This is why we like to go to Japan hehehehe. That's when we can spend hours walking outside and at the parks.

I think it definitely depends on the person when it comes to the heat.
Maybe it has to do with the sweat rather than the sunlight. I heard Japan has the highest number of people with the no sweat gene, so maybe it's more comfortable for people with that gene.
There are times where I feel alright at 36 but after a while so much sweat builds up that I feel like I need to get out of there.
