Winter night session on the Mersey

- After a relatively good session, over high water, further up the river. My next venue was Perch Rock, to fish over low tide.
Being the middle of December it was bitterly cold, but the constant bites gave some good entertainment and kept my mind off the numb fingers.
On a serious note though guys. I know this time of year can be even more of a struggle to some, and if you are feeling your mental health take a dip, there's nothing at all to be ashamed about. There are loads of resources available that offer all sorts of help. I have included the links to some of the more well known helplines below. But like I say, if you want to ping some messages about with a random guy on the internet and get a few things off your chest, feel free to look me up on instagram and drop me a message!!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Take Care & Tight Lines!
Spot on mate, confirming why a lot of us fish just to get some perspective and enjoy nature👍
Thanks Clark 👌🏽
Very well said, fishing has helped keep me,well, fairly sane, for many years now. I read an article in a newspaper a few months ago that doctors are recommending fishing for PTSD.
Glad to hear it's helping you too Kevin! I'm not sure if it's the water or concentrating on a rod tip, or just being out in nature...but it works 🤷🏻♂️
@@theawfulangler A bit of both I recon 👍🎣🐟🍻
Nice bit of fishing there in New Brighton and near to the Perch Rock Lighthouse as well, when i used to fish it wouldn't matter to me what fish i caught as long as i didn't blank out on the day, but there are certain fish that do get on your nerves and Dogfish and Eels were the two for me.
I suffer with Severe Depression as well because of stuff in my life, and because i couldn't fish anymore i started Veg Gardening and that has helped me, knowing a tiny seed that i planted grew into a tall plant with loads of Tomatoes on them and they also say Green is a good colour for Mental Health.
Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year.
Barry (Wirral)
That's just it Barry, it doesn't matter what it takes. Find that thing that calms your mind and make sure you find time for it. And hey, if it puts great fresh food on the table even better 😋 keep your chin up mate 👍🏼
Merry Christmas mate, and happy new year!! Here's to 2023!!
I've been waiting 4 yrs for a hip replacement so fishing has saved me from the depths of depression a good watch. Tight lines
Dad's finally had his knee replaced. Hopefully when we go out there will be no more complaining about the walks 🤣 glad to hear you're managing to get out Peter. Hope you get it sorted soon 👍🏼
Thanks I can't wait to get my life back. Happy New Year to you and all your family
Totally agree matie, the fish are a bonus. I tend to fish a bit further over on the hoyle bank. Really remote and peaceful with plenty of fresh bait.😁 Just the sound of the sea and birds. All the best for Christmas. Might see you out one day on the wirral.
Not heard of that spot Phillip, but if I had it probably wouldn't be as peaceful 😅
Merry Christmas mate, see you in 2023!!
Sending you and your family every positivity. Happy Christmas. ☺ 👍(and what a beautiful view over the river at night. Many thanks)
Thanks Mat! Merry Christmas and all the best for 2023!!
Cheers for highlighting this, had trouble with mh myself of late so started fishing again and agree with your sentiments. All the best and hoping the little one gets big and strong soon. Cheers.
Sorry to hear that Graham, but it's good that you're finding things that help. Keep your chin up, mate, and like I say, reach out if you feel like it might help 👍🏼
Merry Christmas mate ❤️
Great message at the start. Have a good Holiday.
Thanks buddy, you too!
Thanks for the video and for talking about mental health issues, things can get on top of us, all the best for next year and thanks again mate 👍
Not a problem at all Jim. Sometimes, all it takes is talking about it 👍🏼
I subscribed because you have a similar outlook to me on fishing, I make sure my patch is clear when I leave, all coarse angling for me, happy Christmas
Hey Neil, thanks for the sub, and welcome! I might give course a go this year 🤔
Brilliant.thank you
You're welcome William!
Many a time I had nothing on the big rods, but lots on the spinning rod. Casting a 1 oz with a black lug jelly works well for flat fish, dragged slowly Bach in. Also will pick up other fish, but great if have no fresh baits. Also fished there. Take a fork next time. I had way more on dug as I fish. Try cockles Also. Stay on well, I smashed some big bass on them. Great for rays with 4 to 6 together 🤗👍Happy Christmas 🎄
I haven't seen jelly worms, but I'll be keeping an eye out from now on. Like you say, good option if stocks are running low.
Cockles, muscles, razorfish, never done any good on any of those. But I'll keep trying 👍🏼
Thanks for all your videos. I almost exclusively fish from charter boats but it is one pastime where I can forget about everything and relax. Have a Merry Christmas and l look forward to more in 2023.
That sounds good Steve, and there's usually a good craic on charters too!
Merry Christmas mate, here's to some big fish in 2023 🤞🏼
Enjoyed that 👍🎣👀 Good for you on the mental health I have suffered with it and just wanted to say your bang on in what you said ...don't need antidepressants just someone to talk to 👍 Tight Lines and have a great Christmas and all the best for the new year...keep on fishing 🎣
Thanks Pat, merry Christmas, hope you have a gooden 👍🏼
Merry Christmas to you and your family mate. Best wishes.
Thanks Mark, same to you!!
Great video and sound advice re. safety on the shore and mental health and well-being. Dec/Jan are low months for myself for a variety of reasons and I know through experience that no matter how down or low you are, you need to find the courage to reach out for help.
Like I say Colin, reach out if you just want to chat some random 💩 over!
I know it's tough, but they say to make sure you get your greens and blues (grass and sky/outside/fresh air). Honestly, I think its the best tonic. So whether that's a hike or staring at a rod tip, do your best to get outside.
Take it easy mate, don't be hard on yourself, there's always tomorrow 👍🏼
All the very best to you and your family mate. Have a great relaxing time , take care and god bless.
Thanks Greg, really appreciate it! Merry Christmas to you and yours, hope you have a great time 👌🏽
Thank you for sharing merry Christmas to you
Merry Christmas Paul, you're very welcome!!
Great video, wise words about the mental health issues,I’m working through a few issues at the moment and I might just seek some council ing ,cheers have a great Christmas I’ve really enjoyed your videos, quit dry and witty and they do make me laugh which can’t be bad cheers😊
Thanks Andrew!
Keep your chin up mate. And like I say reach out, it doesn't have to be a counsellor but they can definitely help 👍🏼
Great message, never suffer in silence, there is always someone out there who is willing to listen.
Great fishing too, that last whiting must have thought that Christmas had come early with the amount of bait on that hook.
Have a great Christmas, hope your lad gets well soon.
Cheers Dave 👍🏼
Merry Christmas 🍺
Finally found this guy's channel again love his content I find alot of the other UK guys on TH-cam to be to loud
Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍🏼
Hi mate you ok, well said sea fishing was my savour and still is. Merry xmas from GRIMSBY

Looks like fun, everything flooded down here in the North cotswolds
Hope its drying out a bit Neil?
Yeah I agree , I suffer that's why I started fishing as well ...
Well in that case Marcus, tight lines and keep on fishing 🎣 👌🏽
Im a course fisherman & i know nothing about sea fishing, but i really enjoy watching your channel. The first one i watched was you targeting conger & sadly finding a whole lot of rubbish at the mark you was fishing. Thanks for doing this channel & long nay it continue.
Thanks for the kind words Mark! Merry Christmas 🍺
Great video mate, I need to get out more at the minute thanks for the advice tight lines mate 🎣
Make time Ian, that's all I can say buddy. It's something I've worked hard on this year, making time to fish and not feel guilty for it!
Well said , , merry Xmas to you and your family 👪
Cheers John, Merry Christmas to you too!
You should get the lavers guide to sea angling in north Wales and Merseyside paperback book, its brilliant and shows you all the best marks and tactics to fish each venue
Cheers Boardy, I look that one up 👌🏽
Looking forward to this episode! An your spot on with your message on mens mental health issues.just by talking to somebody, anybody your problems, worries seem more manageable (in my case anyways) it's the old cliche a problem shared is a problem halved !!
TIGHT LINES😉👌
That's it buddy! They also say "2 minds are better than one"
All the very best to you.
Thanks Glen, you too!
Top video, top lad well done mate
Thanks Neil, appreciate the support 👍🏼
Top video buddy!
Wishing u and your family a merry Xmas ❤️
Thanks buddy! Recently found your channel, some great videos on there.
I'm heading over your way in a few days. Check out some marks I used to fish with my dad. Might have to steal a couple of the spots I've seen you fishing too 😉
Merry Christmas buddy, here's to 2023 🍺
Brilliant video again
Loved the views across the mersey
Hope you have a good Christmas and an happy new year ,these fishing vids help loads with my mental health 😊
Happy fishing fella 👍
Would love to see you fish at Arnside on the jetty
Glad to hear it mate, and thank you very much 😊
Arnside ay? I'll check it out 👍🏼
Hats off in the first 2 minutes. Man talks sense cheers pal
Appreciate it Ben 👍🏼
Spot on mate
Cheers buddy 👍🏼
Great video as ever. Big thanks for mentioning mental health issues. Been there, know what it's like. Fishing is a great help 👍
Cheers Dave!
Everyone goes through it at some point, I'm sure. I think we just need to talk about it more.
Tight lines 🎣
Love your videos, keep up the good work. All the very best from Down-Under…👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Jim, I'll do my best 👍🏼
Just to add the safety bit if you're fishing a new mark, I try get down for a walk at low, mid and high water before I fish it. I nearly always go solo so it's on me to get home in one piece
That's a good tip Jason. Great if you're local, or on holiday. But agree, it's on you to make it home safe 👌🏽
@@theawfulangler great excuse to get out for a breath of air without the commitment of dragging rods with ya haha
I've got 2 cocker spaniels mate. I don't need much more of an excuse than them
All the best mate
You too Stephen
You are an inspiration ✨️
Strong words those, but thanks 😊
Great video mate.👏👏
Fishing was good, 🎣🎣🎣scenery was awesome 😲and safety advice and mental health advice was 1st class. 👍👍
Even watching TH-cam videos helps, just by giving my mind a break.🫡🫡
Thank you.👍. Total respect.🫡🫡🫡
Have a great Xmas mate 🧑🎄🎁and all the best for the new year.🍺🎆🕛
Thanks Ian, really appreciate that!
Merry Christmas mate, all the best 🎄🍺
Best wishes with everything, I'll watch later, off out now for a walk to catch a few pin whiting after this morning's blow
Hope you had a productive walk Daz
@@theawfulangler noop, water had cleared and a whiting infestation, might get out Monday morning looking at forecast. Bit of a N.W
I'd go tomorrow if I could get away with it but the wrath isn't worth it haha, have a good one 👍
Haha, I'm playing the family man myself for a couple of days, then heading to North Wales for a few days, peace and quiet. Hopefully get plenty of content for January 🤞🏼
Great video mate, I'm heading there next week for a session all being well. Fishing is the perfect tonic for mental health for sure.
Tight lines & Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄🎣
Cheers buddy, same to you!
Xmas not always the best time for lots of folks Good post
If folk are struggling, I can see how it would push people to breaking point!
Merry Xmas pal
Merry Christmas Marcus mate
great session and talk bro
Thanks buddy
I’ve used the little rod before which often gives up a bit of action. Thing is it can distract from the bigger prize off the sleepers! Many a time missed bites off the big rods😬
That's true pal! Although on that spot i haven't had any monsters, but I'm always hopeful!
So true ❤ …. Me ,myself and I
Look after yourself buddy!
It’s not all about the catching, but obviously it does help. Appreciate your efforts and the time you put into it 👍🐟🎣
Cheers Kevin! Yeah, some days the blank sessions have a better effect than the red letter days!
My Mom's had a stroke and I go fishing to give me peace. Hope you're child is good. Thank you for you message! And look after your body too. KFC might be delicious, but there are healthier things to eat...
I wish your mum a speedy recovery 🙏
My body is priority this year for sure. I've always struggled but this last year I've let the strain get to me and become a real emotional eater and not with the best choices either. I know what needs to change, and I'm on it 🫡
Thanks for this video mate👍🏻
Question: are you using the “Shakespeare salt”Beach Rest?
Thanks Joes! And no it's similar, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's smaller, less stable, and not very well built to be honest. But the in-laws bought it as a gift so can't complain!
Hi mate new subscriber love the channel keep it up hope u and family have a great Christmas it can be a tough time of year for people 👍
Welcome along George, reallyappreciate the support!
Merry Christmas, hope you have a gooden 🎄🍺
tide waits for no man
Shows no mercy
have a good one bud
You too mate 👍🏼
2h max on there after low your sound definitely no more. Good session mate
Cheers Darren. Yeah there was plenty of bank left when I wrapped up. Depends how quick you can wrap up and get off, I guess. I'm pretty slick at it, but if you told my dad to wrap up 2hrs after low, it would be high water and he would still have one rod out 🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣 yea you definitely don't want to be out there after that bigger tide on the low you struggle to hold bottom a hour after anyway so everyone packs up anyway
No, and if you do hold bottom, it's because you have been dragged in to a muscle bed 🤣
👏👏👏
Thanks Stephen 👌🏽
Excellent safety tipps all too often overlooked
Cheers James, a little awareness hopefully goes a long way!
Great video mate…I was chatting to you on the beach when you had packed up 👍
Thanks, mate. Did you manage to find any worms? How did you get on?
Gave up on the worms I’d left it a bit late, I drove up to Llandudno that night, only caught whiting…keep the great content coming, tight lines 🎣👍
Oh mate that's a fair drive that, should have stayed on the river! Better luck next time!
I go to north wales most weekends, me an my boy fished the Mersey today(coburg wharf) we had 8 whiting, only fished one rod, guy next to us had a nice cod
I suppose it's only down the road for you guys. The difference between the mersey and North Wales in my mind goes from 2hr drive the 3/3.hrs 😅 I think Liverpool side of the mersey is next on my hit list. Then a trip to the bristol channel.
Where yeah dad lately
He's buggered off to America mate!
Great video m8. Pls do you mind telling me why you call your channel an awful angler
Thanks Mumtaz! The first session I ever recorded, I had a shocker, blanked, slipped over and smashed my rod, so the awful angler just seemed apt at the time 😅
fishing helps
Sure does Dan, merry Christmas
whiteing are not the easyst fish to let go, vevy fragile
They are mate, give a good bite, then they're done!
Not may Cod caught at perch Rock mate, better off up river s bit.
I am beginning to learn that Dan 😅 I was hoping for rays to be honest but I've been told of a couple spots to try in the new year 👍🏼
Great video, wise words about the mental health issues,I’m working through a few issues at the moment and I might just seek some council ing ,cheers have a great Christmas I’ve really enjoyed your videos, quit dry and witty and they do make me laugh which can’t be bad cheers😊
Cheers Andrew! Like I say talking helps mate, inbox is always open 👍🏼
Merry Christmas 🍺
