Geez Gordy the more i watch your channel the more i want to make. A better chain grinder would be a great (and expensive) project. I would love to take this on in my spare time. Im a journeyman toolmaker, i work in a shop where we design and build plastic injection molds for the food and medical industries. I hand file my chains but i will try to find someone with grinder experience to advise me. I think this build would be a blast. Its a shame you guys are on the west coast, I'm on the east.
The SDM 4 is what I to grind with, going from that to a simmington was a bit disappointing and having to figure out how to set the simmington was rough. My dad was so pissed off at the simmington he was gonna run it over with his pickup, he was expecting it to be as precise and repeatable as the SDM 4 and that was NOT the case lmao! But a grinder is better than no grinder, so I took the time to watch the Madsen's videos and the video you have with uncle Phil explaining the simmington saved my ass figuring it out. I was never real fast grinding with a swing arm because I wanted it to be as accurate so I over carefuled the grind procedure and it would take an hour. .........SDM 4 I could smoke through a chain in 15 minutes even with a few banged up corners. Super neat video Gordy, Silvey was ahead of their time and almost engineered themselves outta business I think with their grinders and jacks
Gordy, this was really super. Something never found anywhere ever on TH-cam. Can you demonstrate the Silvey depth gauge grinder in a future video? Especially how to get consistent depth on left vs. right cutters when using an automated depth gauge grinder. Thank you!
I am waaaaaay to distracted by all the cool stuff in the background!!!!!!!! When do we get a proper shop tour!! would be interested in the stories and significance of the old timers and buddys in the photos on the wall and the layout and construction of your shop! That place is an absolute temple of awesome! Love the ability to get a lot of things done while also being surrounded by all the great historical artifacts!
Great collection. I have the new simington and love it. You can run the cord inside down the stand to make it a little cleaner and less of a tripping hazard. Also I wear a pair of +2.00 reading glasses. You can see so much better while grinding.
neat learning how it is done.yes all units have pro and cons! just have to get around and see which are key or just a bother! great over view of the process, and what to look for when purchasing a Silvey sharpener.
I have a 620 but I’ve only messed around with it a little bit and I haven’t cut that many hardwoods so I’m not the right guy to ask on that. Sorry I can’t help you much. I only square grind so I guess on the angles mostly trial and error
@@westcoastsaw1368 just a guess but does that have something to do with bore cutting? Shortening up the total length of the top plate so when the tooth travels around the tip of the bar the back edge of the tooth isn’t riding the cut? More distance between tooth and raker as well.
gordy. you need to invest in CBN wheels for your grinders. they will last you years. more precise. and most of all will leave very little, IF ANY, of a burr. all while putting darn near zero heat into the chain
I have a chain or 2 rich done for me on his silveys and man there wicked…to much for our oaks hickory and stuff like pecan…man if they won’t drop through a poplar though…

I've got a Silvey (I think it's a model 510), I've had it for over 20 years. I love it. Thanks for the video.
Gordy 1976 is not that old 😊. I really enjoy seeing all these machines in action, thanks

The shop is kinda work in progress but it does make you feel like your back in time with the old stuff and wood everywhere
You need to do a shop tour

Gordy love your products very informative post. Seeing your spring boards in the background, have you ever considered doing a tutorial on making one.
We could do that it’s pretty easy

Alot of useful and great information there, nice video

Good stuff !
1976, I was made in 1971 and I look a lot more beat up than the grinder does.
Ha Ha me too brother
The razor sharp 2 does adust up and down but you have to adjust the position of the wheel itself.
Nice comparison video!
Thanks!
Awesome comparison.
Thanks Gordy ✊️
Any time!
Hey Gordy question I just got a Oregon 620-120 what are the best angles for hardwood
Or anyone out there looking for suggestions thanks all

@@westcoastsaw1368 I hear ya thank you anyway and love your products dogs belts clutch cover bark box love it all my friend
How come the back end of the top plate is angled down on that chain?
So, I wasn’t only one to notice that.
I do that to my chains on my SDM4
@@westcoastsaw1368 care to elaborate why?

I too was curious about that.
Where did you get a new SDM-4?
Is there a Zieglemyer hiding anywhere in that shop?

Lol. I'd like to find any of those grinders that cheap.
👍🏻👏
