God, long have I wished for SEGA to come back to the Riders series and make a new game out of it. I've had so many fond memories of this game and it's such a shame that it, and it's sequels were crushed into the depths of hell by youtube critics.

@@ladjiel Fortunately a lot of people are now realizing that many "professional" game critics and journalists are clowns who don't understand, or bother trying to understand, the games they review.
What youtube critics sh"t on Riders? The most prominent videos I can find on Riders praise it to an extreme degree while just mentioning that it has a crappy tutorial system. And for the vast majority of people who try the game, they will have a terrible time. You need to invest a *lot* of hours into Riders to even be decent enough to beat the full main campaign. And if you don't believe me get a friend who has never played Riders, explain the controls to them, show them a race, and then have them try to race. They will fall flat on their face for hours at the minimum and not have fun. To enjoy Riders you need to put dozens to hundreds of hours of practice in (which I have but I acknowledge it isn't for the general public.)
To be fair, Zero gravity had their own problems. While riders had a more beginner friendly control, Zero gravity introduce new turning system that doesn't feel natural for people that already conditioned by other kart racing game. Making it harder to get new audiences. And Free Riders doesn't really help by being literally unplayable.
Damn, the segment on the differences between Nintendo's and Sega's approach to fan games is so appalling for a second I thought, "Imagine the games Nintendo fans could make with Nintendo if Nintendo didn't actively hate their own fans."
Big Thanks to Akshon for redoing the video!! Sonic Riders is definitely one of the most underrated Racing games, period. Some folks like to call it a fighting game disguised as a racer, and for good reason. While obviously more limited with tech than a fighting game like Melee, it doesn't at all mean that the game is short on competitive depth or mastery. Also, as the video editor for Tournament Edition's and ExGL's trailers, it's very humbling to see my old works included.
The Protagonist was on-point with his explanation of Sonic Riders; took me ages to get to grasps with that game when I was younger. Cool concise video on this topic. I'm just glad my How to Play vid has been found useful by so many people. I think you're spot on taking the release of the movie into account concerning the influx of new players, My video took off a few days after it was released. I also didn't even know about the modding/competitive community till after my video got big and The Protagonist reached out to me. I think Riders was also buried for a long time due to two main reasons. The first one was the review scores. Even someone that's a big fan of the game objectively, I think it's only a 6 outta 10. game design is solid as well as all presentation aspects, sound, music, and level design, as well as the game's aesthetic. But it's unpolished, and does a bad job teaching you how to play, even if you do watch the tutorial. Because of the high difficulty curve, it leaves an incredibly poor first impression. Being released the same year as 06 and Sonic the Hedgehog GENESIS on GBA doesn't help either, esp when it carries the same 15th Anniversary logo on it's boxart. Which brings me to the other reason... Game Grumps. I genuinely believe their short let's play of the game showed its major flaws upfront and everyone took their experience at face value. If you look at the comments on their video it's largely people defending the game, but they are people that have already played it. I always had the experience of potential newcomers citing that video as why they weren't interested. I'm really happy that people have started to give the game a chance and experience it for themselves. Seeing a game that I loved as a kid finally break through the prejudices people had against it is really validating for me personally. Fantastic video, thank you for Covering Riders. I love seeing how the community grows.
The fact that anybody is talking about this game makes me happy. Also one time I took acid and watched Sonic Rider's cutscenes to try and transport myself back to 2006
I just found out about Sonic Riders DX a few days ago and it has already taken over so much of my free time. Obviously there's the features mentioned in the video where they made the game more competitive, but the team is also adding new characters/gear, adding skins for characters, and even revamped the graphics (I forgot to what quality but it's LEAGUES better than it's GameCube days). I adore the team working on this project and cannot wait to follow it into the future!
This is a great idea, it's such a great mod of a gamecube classic just like sonic riders. It also has an interseting story behind it that would make an good video.
I honestly appreciate this exists. Sonic Riders was always one of those games that just seemed sick as hell to me. I never owned a copy as a kid but I’d play it whenever I saw it at my local K-Mart GameCube kiosk. It was just so dope that I always imagined having a birthday cake with Sonic Team riding hoverboards as toy decorations. The design, the extreme sports aesthetic, the speed. It was all just really dope for 10 year old me and I’m glad it’s getting at least a little shine.
Another great vid! Is there any chance you guys could do a “Behind the ‘Behind the Akshon’” where we learn about you guys personally or as personally as you guys are willing to get? I think a lot of fans are really interested, and it would make for some new, pretty simple content. Anyways, thanks for the vid!
Happy seeing this get more love. It's really good! If having a high learning curve. It's the only good thing about the 15th anniversary. I'll always defended this game and Zero G.
@@sinfinite7516 The original video only covered "tournament edition" (and rather inaccurately) while not mentioning SRDX and Regravitified at all (which are made by the original developers behind "tournament edition"). Because of that, a lot of community members had essentially protested the inaccuracies (mainly the lack of mentioning SRDX and the way the video framed "tournament edition" as made by the 3 people interviewed when the current version of TE was made by the people who made SRDX) and the platforming of The_Protagonist, who has harassed, threatened, attempted to extort, other crimes, etc. against members of the community.

I'd love to do this for Snowboard Kids 2. That game is pretty friggin close for an item based racer with a few things holding it back. Mostly because of the ability to deflect attacks back without items which requires timing to pull off. There's a fair amount of play and counter play there.

I used to play the crap out of Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, never played the other title because I didn't have it at the time, but damn, to think that both games went from casual and unbalanced racing to having whole teams dedicated to balancing things out just fills my heart with joy. Hope these projects aren't abandoned in the future.

I used to play this on my PS2 waaaay back. The game didnt save to my memory card so I had my ps2 on for days to not lose progress lmao. this shit is hype af
I played Sonic Riders as a kid against the CPU more competitively than any other game, It really is Esport worthy but it also lacks flow so for it to take off, riding would have to be creatively flexible; skidding and hopping off walls, shortcut paths which can be tricky or quicker depending on the player's playstyle, a versatile way to compete against each other instead of the current - one play style which is reach top speed and know all the shortcut cues.
Would you please consider covering the rise and demise of S4 League? It might not be a very interesting story but maybe you will want to cover it. It has been a core part of my childhood and it's sad to see it be forgotten, only barely surviving with private servers (namely Xero). It's not a success story but please take a look at it.

Are you interested in covering another deeply competitive racing game just like you did Sonic Riders?
0:35 "SONIC" is spelled with those wind effects! I never noticed that until I played it at .25 speed! That's awesome!
This game was so much fun once I learnt how to play it. Hoping someday it can come back.
The fact that anybody is talking about this game makes me happy.
Also one time I took acid and watched Sonic Rider's cutscenes to try and transport myself back to 2006
I've always loved Sonic Riders. I'm glad people feel enough to give it this treatment.
Super glad that people are finally taking notice of Sonic Riders. It's a surprisingly deep and fun game to play
Do Super Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 next (we're even partnered with that discord)
This is a great idea, it's such a great mod of a gamecube classic just like sonic riders. It also has an interseting story behind it that would make an good video.
yes please
I would like, comment and subscribe on that video.
Yes please
i heard that server got shut down cause the owner got blackmailed or something, or was that the other gnt4 server?
damn ... what a video great topic ... I consider myself specifically a sonic riders fan I played it for approximately 800 hours
I remember trying to get into this, couldn't get the mod working properly sadly, but I tried the changes in single-player and it feels really good
Just imagine years later we got official new Sonic Riders game.
I'll always defended this game and Zero G.
hope whatever the controversy was with the last video got sorted out.
What happened? I noticed this was a Re upload, but what controversy was there?
Keep in my recollection of the old video might not be perfect since I can't go back and check.
Glad you guys reuploaded this!
I'm so glad my favorite racing game is getting the attention it deserves. Now I have a reason to refine my skills and maybe join some tournaments.
This is a reupload, right? 'Cause I definitely watched this before. I so recall the video being around 15mins long.
Did something happen? D:
Edit: Aight, so,new vod, more info in it. Glad they even bothered ^_^
I think so yeh
Same here
I'm glad I'm not the only one
They removed and updated the original video as it was missing some key info about the community
@@CrimsonGaia Thanks! I appreciate the info you just gave, there.
This was the game that introduced me to Sonic the Hedgehog😢😢
Finally some reconciliation lol. A lot of ppl didn’t know abt the competitive scene for this game. I think it’s super underrated. Not only as a competitive game but just a fun game in general.
I'd love to do this for Snowboard Kids 2. That game is pretty friggin close for an item based racer with a few things holding it back. Mostly because of the ability to deflect attacks back without items which requires timing to pull off. There's a fair amount of play and counter play there.
I really hope they make another riders with the boost formula
i played zero gravity and i got really mixed memories of it. It was fun but hard and strange to handle at the same time. Liked the maps tho, great designs
Sonic riders franchise plays a huge part of my childhood. Although I don't play the games anymore :c I still listen to their soundtracks especially when doing some cardio acts.
I used to play this on my PS2 waaaay back. The game didnt save to my memory card so I had my ps2 on for days to not lose progress lmao. this shit is hype af
As a kid playing this I never realized how in-depth the game actually was. So glad to see a piece of childhood again
I love Sonic Riders! This game is super fun and I did not know there was a competitive scene? I gotta look into this!
FINALLYYYY IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A RIDERS COMPETITIVE SCENE
Loved playing this growing up
I played Sonic Riders as a kid against the CPU more competitively than any other game, It really is Esport worthy but it also lacks flow so for it to take off, riding would have to be creatively flexible; skidding and hopping off walls, shortcut paths which can be tricky or quicker depending on the player's playstyle, a versatile way to compete against each other instead of the current - one play style which is reach top speed and know all the shortcut cues.
I could have sworn I've watched this video before. Hearing the intro gave the biggest hit of deja vu. A reupload, maybe?
I think so
Yea maybe copyright broblems on some song?
It was reuploaded to update some of the info, I believe.
@@SirknightDevoir ;)
Yup, def a reupload.
Riders was a very unique experience and I really enjoyed it. There was definitely potential
There's just no game that has the speed, technique, or vibe of Riders, it needs to see a new entry!
Sonic riders was one of my childhood's most iconic games. So good to see it getting the recognition it deserves.
Would you please consider covering the rise and demise of S4 League? It might not be a very interesting story but maybe you will want to cover it. It has been a core part of my childhood and it's sad to see it be forgotten, only barely surviving with private servers (namely Xero). It's not a success story but please take a look at it.
Sword fights on S4 were *chefs kiss*
I also want a video of S4
I never thought there was a day where akshon eSports would talk about Sonic riders competitive, but I'm so happy they did
The intro of this game is *FIRE* 🔥🔥🔥
Also, apparently according to some comments, the same people that worked in the intro of this game worked on the Levi Vs Kenny fight animation in attack on Titan
Damn I use to play Both Sonic Riders a lot as a child and to see there is a tournament scene for this?! We'll Count me in I like being competitive give me more to do when streaming and bringing back old school games cause these newer games is not doing my justice right now!
aight boys we loadin up slippy sonic riders
still play this game from time to time doing time trials. Never knew about the tournament edition. Thanks for bringing this to my attention
Would love for Sega to bring this back
Sonic riders was such a great game! Had ton of fun playing it on ps2
I loved Sonic Riders Zero Gravity that came on the Wii. That was my favorite one.
