Hey guys we hope you enjoyed this deep dive into the Mario Kart Wii esports scene! Special thanks to TWD98, Arc Intel , NMeade, and Arsene/New Leaf Esports for their contributions to this video.
This is very good on describing the casual scene and where mario kart wii is at this point, but really fails to touch on mario kart wii as an esport. Time trialling is not an e-sport, most people would agree with that, at least prior to a tt online mod. Also not one of the players you mention as a source is even on an active team for the biggest e-sport league in the community right now, which is Mario Kart Professional Series (MKPS). I should mention Arc played in the first leg of this series, but his team has since disbanded and reformed with a roster that is not playing MKPS. At 8:01, you say lounge is the best to play to competitive. Lounge is widely regarded by almost everyone who plays this game competitively as far less competitive then wars (clan battles, as you say in your video, to circumvent demonetisation I assume), due to the fact that Item luck is much less of a factor in a war then a Lounge event (mogi). Also, you say Lounge was founded about 1 year ago, when in fact, It was founded on December 10th, 2017. Also, the elo system for lounge with the thresholds for rankings is from season 4, not the current season 5. Also, I'm very disappointed to see you didn't credit Joris in the video, here is his channel, most of the footage discussing wars is from him, th-cam.com/users/jorisjv2000. Overall its a very good video on the state of the game, but hardly touches the esports scene, leaving out the largest league (in terms of prize money and length of a season) this game has ever had for an e sport. I'm vert glad to see you did show it off on a large and diversified platform, hopefully it can direct people to the actual e sports side of this game
Exactly, this is what keeps the game so entertaining and makes me come back to it everytime, there’s so many things to learn but it’s nothing too groundbreaking which would give you an “unfair” advantage. You just use the skills that you learn overtime and have to use them in the right places, making it a sort of puzzle which makes it so good
I used to have this game but I really didn’t know it was this loved like I’m not really sure what you all are on about lol like tricks and all that I’ve got to see for myself the big difference
wabbit jevil go to the Michael guys video on “how to install homebrew to your Wii.” And then go to ctgp website and fill the wizard out saying you have homebrew. Easiest way to get it to work for me.

I'm so glad the Mario Kart Wii scene has been getting public notoriety and respect in recent times!! James Charles was even featured in a TWD98 video a few months ago, and his channel, as well as others like NMeade, Arc, and Sword0fSeals, have been steadily growing. It has a ton of small glitches that when properly utilised can make a huge difference. Those glicthes also provide a ton of variety to the game and make it stand out. - The shortcuts are INSANE. Some of them were so massive you had to make a special term for them (ultra-shortcuts). New shortcuts are still being found today. - The item distribution is INSANE. Combine that with all the shortcuts and you get the most chaotic MK game ever made. You can get hit with 4 blue shells in one race. You can go from first to last in 2 seconds. The thundercloud might give you nightmares. The game can be so unfair, but at the samr time it's part of what makes you want to come back to it time and again. - Not as important as the rest but best MK roster. Yes it's not as big as MK8 Deluxe but it has great variety and who am i kidding it's literally got Funky Kong

I could go to college, start a family, become a billionaire, become a pokemon trainer, go to Hogwarts, Go to U.A high, Invent time travel, become king of the pirates, find all the dragon balls and Mario Kart Wii will still be alive
I've been in the mkw community for over 10 years now and activily playing clan wars for the clan Avail for almost 5 years now and it has been an absolute blast!! Really great job with this video, especially seeing you're not appart of the community!! Hope some of you guys got inspired to join this awesome, ever growing game and community. Mkw really is the Meelee of Smash Brothers!! :p
100% the best Mario Kart game. Some of the incredible tech you can do and the incredible community makes me absolutely love it. It sits right in that threshold of extremely fun, competitive AND glitchy. It's stunning.
O h it’s not that diverse. Funky and Daisy are default for most map. Unless they decide to do a certain weight class only, you’ll see Daisy and Funky all the way.
@@giahypham4111 True... I realised that as I was writing that comment and was considering deleting it. It's mostly the maps honestly along with the community
O h at least the community is active. The balancing is bad, but people make it work by doing game mode like certain kart combinations only, outside drift bikes only etc.
I remember waking up every morning and getting out of the bed and going into the living room just to play Mario kart Wii and Wii sport resorts Ahh..good times
one of the most interesting things about this is that if the game gets a large competitive fanbase like Melee, we could see a "Mario Kart Ultimate" down the line intended to try and win that fanbase back as Smash Ultimate was intended to (and to some extent did) with the Melee fanbase.
Yeah instead of mario kart 8 daluxe bwueeeh they were too lazy to make a mario kart game for the switch so they just copy and pasted the whole thing improved the graphics a bit and threw it out for everyone to play
Default They change stuff from MK8 to Deluxe Not to mention MK8 didn’t sold very well because it was on Wii U. The switch aloud it to have even bigger sales
The lounge/ranked system implemented in the last 3 years or so has really spiked player interest. It's never the same race or situation which is part of the reason it's so addicting. For the most part, there's always room to improve which also contributes to so many people continuing to play.
I remember as a kid being severely addicted to Mario Kart wii around 2011-2012, and I never imagined it would still be alive in 2021. It makes me so happy that it did
@@Joshy- Same. I played every Mario Kart game to death, even Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart Super Circuit. And I find Wii to be by far the most enjoyable and interesting one, mainly because of the controls and shortcuts.
Mario Kart Wii has started my gaming career when I was 5 when It got released. I’m now nearly 17 and I always will have a grin on my face when I see this gem and play it myself every now and again with my own custom textures
I love Mario Kart Wii and still play it regularly. I’m happy to see that faces such as ArcIntel and NMeade made it into the video. Some issues I have with the video: • The consoles are simply called Wii and Wii U, not the Nintendo Wii or the Nintendo Wii U • 1:46 - Why are you showing MK8 gameplay here? • 2:55 CTGP 2.8 actually only had 28 custom tracks (hence the name). When CTGP 4.4 came out, it had 44 custom tracks and introduced custom course slots for the first time. CTGP Revolution v1.0 then improved on this with 104 custom tracks (as well as the original 32 Nintendo courses), the custom menu system we know and love today, and Custom Tracks Worldwide. • 3:02 Chadderz wasn't his “new” partner in crime - in fact, he made SZS Modifier, the first tool that allowed people to make custom tracks and what was used for the first few years of the game’s life. • 3:39 The features you mentioned were not initially included with CTGP v1.03 (however, Bean refuses to change the version number past v1.03, as he sees it as the “last” version due to the channel’s automatic updater). • 11:12 These numbers are inaccurate due to the pandemic, which is noted on the Wiimmfi website. Take a look at the average numbers and you’ll see they shot up starting in March. Also, that image you showed is of logins in the past 10 hours, not the past 10 days. Other than those issues, you guys covered our community’s game pretty well. Looking forward to seeing more in the future 👍
Ayyy, glad to see that a few clips from my Exalt vlog made it at 0:29 and 9:38. I gotta say, this video was well put together! I wish the video also included talks about the resurgence of the MKB media staff and league match casts. Otherwise, great job!
Hi, Arsene here. Thankyou so much Akshon for the opportunity to interview! Very proud to have been included in this project. Please check out the awesome work MarioKartBoards and MarioKartCentral (MK8 Deluxe Scene) do for the two games, there are a ton of leagues which are super easy and accessible even for the average player.
By the time this happened, I joined the community back in 2018, but I used to play this in my childhood, I was a casual player back then. Now I am very competitive at the game, things have changed over the years, adding 200cc, Item Rain, New CTGP Tracks, 24 Player Mode, Lounge, and Online TT. It has some potential to be the best game. I looking forward to the MKW Community to continue to grow. Shout out to TWD98, Arc, Sword, NMeade, Mr. Bean for keeping Community alive.
Amazing video, thanks for putting some more attention on MKW! Could have mentioned the 24 player mode coming soon, you use clips of it at 6:16 (Yes it will work online too)
My favorite part about mario kart wii is that there is actually a skill gap. In mario kart wii, the better player will almost always win, while in mario kart 8 deluxe, it is super easy to be screwed by items. It will always be the melee of mario kart, full of jank but that’s what makes it good :)
Same. Wii is by far the most interesting Mario Kart game because of it's competitive controls and difficult shortcuts. Mario Kart 8 as an example gets boring quickly.
Ikr mk8 just gets so repetitive after a while but mkwii always comes out with new stuff for every aspect of it (custom tracks, custom game modes, WRs, TAS strats, etc.). No race every feels the same, and while I can’t say it’s never frustrating (losing to RNG lol), it’s never boring, which is what solidifys itself has my favourite mk game
It's crazy how perfectly this parallels to Melee's scene, that's freaking awesome they found a way to keep it alive! Edit: they should team up with the Melee community to put on some events! It'd be a good way to get exposure to both scenes
Not only is it the best Mario Kart game, it’s the greatest video game of all time. Better than literally any other game ever released, and you can’t change my mind.
A few years ago I would have said that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is better. But now that I learned how to play Mario Kart Wii competitive, I definitely agree with you. Mario Kart Wii is my favourite game of all time.
TWD98 is a seasoned veteran and due to him and mrbean and others in the community the game hasn't died and obviously the people. I've been watching Troy since he was at 50k man like 6 years ago man time flies
Awesome and well informative video! Thank you so much for including us as well, as Exalt 2019 was a very memorable experience in the Mario Kart Wii timeline! There will definitely be more memories to be made and we can’t wait for what more Mario Kart Wii has to offer.
With 500 daily logins I can’t really keep my hopes up for this game getting big again. The cost of entry is high with the limited hardware supply, plus the mods you have to implement, and then you jump into a minute pool of players who have years of experience ready to crush you. Unless there’s a way for new comers to get into, this game won’t grow to the level melee has. It’s just not possible.
that's not true. people pick up the game relatively fast - i know people playing competitive after 6 months of playing the game, whereas i have played since 2010 and i am only low level competitively
In case people were fooled by this ignorant comment, there are many ways of being paired up with racers with little to none experience, skill based match making exists, top players don't play people that just started, you don't see messi playing with ur neighborhood kids do you? of course not. lol
I thought I knew everything about MKWii online, but I learnt a few things in this documentary alone, such as the fact there's E-Sports events and that MOGI isn't a general term for standard online clan battles.
i never knew why i was so attracted to playing mario kart wii over any of the other mario karts, but being so into melee made me appreciate the feeling of being fully in control over my character. I wasn't aware of all the mods and custom servers, i just play the original tracks by myself for hours or whenever a friend is over. I'm really excited to try out all of the options that are available for this game.
A Yellow Shoe Yes usually means a lot of something, the way “Yes” is being used in this situation means Nintendo won’t stop making Mario Kart games any time soon.
no it's not lol. Maybe in North America, but the Japanese 8D community is massive, easily 3k+ players just there, not even touching Europe + americas. And even comparing western communities head to head, 8D just got the largest team entrant tourney, MKU S10 with 92 teams, beating WCL's record of 90 teams by 2 (WCL was on MKW back in 2010). The only thing that MKW has that's bigger than 8D is the lounge, which is somewhat larger than 8d's in terms of number of players
@@thekoopaguymk The lounge for MKW isn't even larger too, so you can throw that out. Both have 3300 players and the 8D one is way more active. Really the only thing that MKW is currently beating 8D at I think is total sales and presence on TH-cam, probably. Troy brings in lots of new players for sure. Sales wise 8D is actually catching up to MKW fast. If there's no new MK on the Switch it's honestly more than possible it'll outsell it. I think MKW also had about 25 million sales through the first 3 years. Impressive considering the game was already launched. I think everyone hopes this doesn't happen though since MK9 would be better. If you combine 8U and 8D sales though, it's almost certainly going to pass MKW in a little over a year. But yeah, the original point. Saying MKW is going stronger than 8D is completely false currently. But it's honestly incredibly impressive just how committed the players are to the game.
As a competitive player I am very grateful to see a video regarding the competitive scene of a game that's usually only referred to through a casual perspective. Keep it up!
Imagine if Nintendo releases a Mario Kart 9 with the exact same controls and nuances as Wii but with more characters advanced graphics and more maps, and then pulls a Valve and opens the game up to the modders. Never gonna happen, but it would be cool.
And in the future people can also enjoy the game in various new languages like Dutch, Portuguese (PAL), Portuguese (NTSC),Russian, Greek, Polish, Finnish, Swedish, Czech, Hungarian, Catalan, Croatian, Simplified Chinese, Thai, Latin, Andalusian thanks to our Translation Project by Larry98, Zach, Atlas and Syara and a lot of translators. And those are just the languages which we are currently testing. Another 27 languages are currently in progress by our translators.
I remember when I speedrun the game when I was younger. I try to get to the top quartile in every race course. The ones I did good at I practiced until I get top 100 on some of the courses. Then I soon got top 10 in a few courses. I stopped playing and later moved on to MarioKart 7 on the DS
There is still a serious opportunity for esports and competitive play. For example, 2v2, and full teams but without immunity. You'd be surprised at the amount of communication and complex playing at that level.
It’s great how these guys are still keeping Mario Kart Wii alive! Thank you guys for creating these awesome servers and mods and thank you for those of you who are part of the community!

100% the best Mario Kart game. Some of the incredible tech you can do and the incredible community makes me absolutely love it. It sits right in that threshold of extremely fun, competitive AND glitchy. It's stunning.
Mario Kart Wii and Melee hell yeah lets go!
Because it had funky kong.
It's quite the amazing game tbh.
And has probably one of the best rosters of characters and stages.
The variation of the characters and the map glitches really help. Daisy and Funky Kong are meta but you decide who to pick based on the maps etc
The balancing is bad, but people make it work by doing game mode like certain kart combinations only, outside drift bikes only etc.
character variation and stages made it for me....and funky kong lol even if he wasnt the fastest id still play as him just cus hes a badass hahaha
I remember waking up every morning and getting out of the bed and going into the living room just to play Mario kart Wii and Wii sport resorts
Ahh..good times
Yeah i miss thoes days
one of the most interesting things about this is that if the game gets a large competitive fanbase like Melee, we could see a "Mario Kart Ultimate" down the line intended to try and win that fanbase back as Smash Ultimate was intended to (and to some extent did) with the Melee fanbase.
I would love that tbh, especially if they bring back every technique as well, like Snaking, Wheelies, etc etc
Yeah instead of mario kart 8 daluxe bwueeeh they were too lazy to make a mario kart game for the switch so they just copy and pasted the whole thing improved the graphics a bit and threw it out for everyone to play

"New Character's like Funky kong and Funky kong" 😂
Dry Bowser, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, and Rosalina: "Am I a joke to you?"
The lounge/ranked system implemented in the last 3 years or so has really spiked player interest. It's never the same race or situation which is part of the reason it's so addicting. For the most part, there's always room to improve which also contributes to so many people continuing to play.
This game was my childhood I never have had a game that’s stuck with me for all these years except Mario kart Wii. I am so glad it’s still thriving.
It was my first game and my first console that's why I always play it time to time
I never thought I'd see TWD on Akshon😂

I know... weird to think I’m not the only one that faithfully watches both channels...
Funky Kong is more of a main character in Mario Kart Wii than in Donkey Kong.
Don’t like your own comment
This game has "the melee effect", beacuse has a big competitive scene that refuses to the new games of the series, andI love it!!
Riccoe still my favorite Mario Kart wii
And the fan base hate the newer games and they’re toxic
The new ones are very different from mkwii, the skill ceiling of wii is much higher, while the new games were toned down for casual players.

When you watch the clips and see an old clan member of yours. FATAL
I love Mario Kart Wii and still play it regularly. I’m happy to see that faces such as ArcIntel and NMeade made it into the video.
Some issues I have with the video:
• The consoles are simply called Wii and Wii U, not the Nintendo Wii or the Nintendo Wii U
• 1:46 - Why are you showing MK8 gameplay here?
When my friends say "you wanna play Mario Kart", Mario Kart wii is the one they're talking about.
I need to get my Wii out. I played the modded tracks back when they first released but I didn't realize how much had improved since then.
"new nintendo characters, like funky kong, and funky kong." hit the nail right on the head

I've always said MKWii was the Melee of MarioKart.

Mario kart Wii just gives me this warm fluffy feeling in my chest that other Mario karts don't :')

Mario Kart Wii is the Super Smash Bros Melee of the Mario kart games and it’s amazing. So glad I grew up with this masterpiece.
Shoutouts to TWD98 for helping to keep the community alive
Amazing video, thanks for putting some more attention on MKW! Could have mentioned the 24 player mode coming soon, you use clips of it at 6:16 (Yes it will work online too)
Mom I'm in a video! Jokes aside, this video is HUGE! Very well made :)
When I heard the opening for MKWii again, I felt nostalgia wash over me like waves over rocks in the sea.
I need to get another Wii.
My favorite part about mario kart wii is that there is actually a skill gap. In mario kart wii, the better player will almost always win, while in mario kart 8 deluxe, it is super easy to be screwed by items. It will always be the melee of mario kart, full of jank but that’s what makes it good :)
I agree. I hate how in MK8 you can get a star or a golden mushroom in second place.
Been playing for all 12 years. Haven't gotten bored yet!
Ironically, this game had 0 DLC or Updates. I think that says something.
I think custom tracks and other modifications is one of the big reasons why mkw is still very popular.
So technically there were a lot of updates.
Not really, DLC was new at the time and something the Wii just did NOT do.
Animal crossing city folk dlc
I think that says the game came out in 2008
Really good video! Always nice to see this game get the love it deserves from OUTSIDE the community
It's crazy how perfectly this parallels to Melee's scene, that's freaking awesome they found a way to keep it alive!
Edit: they should team up with the Melee community to put on some events! It'd be a good way to get exposure to both scenes
I like how this game is so popular but have literaly 3 good motors and others are just bad vehicules
Not only is it the best Mario Kart game, it’s the greatest video game of all time. Better than literally any other game ever released, and you can’t change my mind.
I agree, Mario Kart Wii is the best video game imo.

A few years ago I would have said that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is better. But now that I learned how to play Mario Kart Wii competitive, I definitely agree with you. Mario Kart Wii is my favourite game of all time.

Mario Kart Wii is the Melee of Mario Kart in the sense that it never dies.
@E Peen How exactly? Don't get me wrong, mkds is a great game, but it doesn't have nearly as big of a community as mkwii.
Now, Nintendo is trying to make Mario Kart 8 NOT die instead of making a brand new one 💀

100 years from now, when the next Avatar wakes up from their frozen slumber, people will still be playing Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros Melee.
This is beautiful thank you for showing a little of our community :)
I'd play this game, if I had my Wii back.
You can play it on your phone/pc
i never knew why i was so attracted to playing mario kart wii over any of the other mario karts, but being so into melee made me appreciate the feeling of being fully in control over my character. I wasn't aware of all the mods and custom servers, i just play the original tracks by myself for hours or whenever a friend is over. I'm really excited to try out all of the options that are available for this game.
'So when do you plan to stop making mario kart games?'
Nintendo: 'Yes'
? What do you mean
A Yellow Shoe Yes usually means a lot of something, the way “Yes” is being used in this situation means Nintendo won’t stop making Mario Kart games any time soon.
No no you did it incorrectly
It should have been "So how many Mario kart games will you make" or something along those lines
I have a new favourite combination

1:50 Funky Kong and Funky Kong
Just thought that was funny because Funky Kong is the most OP character in mkw
I'm glad they made the customs servers to keep the community alive. It's better than ever now. Throwback to the last race on WFC too :D
Its not refused, its refusing. Its still going stronger than mk8 deluxe
no it's not lol.
MK8 DX won’t outsell Wii. We are looking for MK9.
By which merit?
Keep it up!
6:38 is when they explained why MKW hasn't died.
“Log into wiimfi daily” NOPE not me definitely lmao
