  • On this episode we walk through my autofocus setup for the Nikon Z6 III for bird and wildlife.
    It's a detailed walkthrough of each setting, why I am using these settings, and the button layout to move through the settings with the quickest way to access them and keep you focused on taking the picture as opposed to fumbling through menus.

      I shoot Canon but came from Nikon & am always a little tempted to add it to my Canon gear.

      I have been shooting Canon for the past years 5D2,5D3, 5D4, R, R6 using the 300LIS f/2.8 USM II, 400DO, 400DOii for airshows and wildlife. I tested for a few month a D810, D750 and Z6, Z6ii. Did not get warm with it. You can call me a Canon fanboy. But I switched now completely to Nikon Z6iii, for several reasons. Z6iii got some improvments which were always missing, like fully articulated screen and a reliable AF. I love the crop mode. Where Canon R6ii let me down, not because of the camera but the lenses. I always loved the two Nikon lenses and I had a whish for Canon bringing something similar for RF mount at a similar pricing. 300mm f/4 PF VF and 500 f/5.6 VR PF. Size, weight, IQ, AF speed and lastly price are just amazing. While the Canon R6ii still has the better AF, no match on the lens side. Thats why I had to switch my view on Canon.

      @@Muehlema1 Totally get that and feel the same way but for two major things for me and that is the ergos of the Z bodies do not sit with me and if the autofocus for birds is not up to a camera that is a few years old now l feel the Canon cameras to come will have better autofocus still so with time we see where l end up.

    Hi Scott, I really like your photography and your opinions. Could you help me (maybe more people) with one question? I use a 180-600, I was thinking about adding a 400 2.8 lens. My question is, have you tried the 400 2.8 TC? My first idea was to search for a used 400 f-mount, but like you, I like to photograph under rain and hard conditions, so putting external converters is a no-go). Maybe the in built TC lens seems worthy saving until I could afford the Z mount lens.

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      OK that 400 2.8 TC lens *drool* she's on my list to acquire. I have used it form time to time and I have 3 friends I shoot with that all have it. The ability to move from 400 f/2.8 to 560 f/4 with a switch is amazing. And you can drop another 1.4 on it and not have degradation of IQ. SO now you are @ f/4 @ 560 and F/ 5.6 @ 784. Just incredible.
      If you got an F mount it would be putting on and off a TC a lot as 400 for birds at times is a bit short.

    Is there no third command dial on the Z6III? It also looks like you cant set up exposure compensation or ISO to the dials. The two step process for ISO doesn't seem efficient to me and reminds me of shooting on my old D5600. Why not set the back dial to ISO and the ISO button to Aperture if you change ISO more in field? I'm used to back button autofocus. Sorry, if you might have already mentioned in the video but what is your half press shutter button set to? Is it to animal AF since your using the front button as single point? When you shoot do you first acquire focus using the single point and then try the animal AF. At least on the R6MII I find that I often have to 'prime' the animal AF using single point before switching over. Does the Nikon autofocus just grab the animal from the scene without too much aid?

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No third dial for ISO. You HAVE to hit the ISO button to change ISO.Very annoying coming from the Canon world.
      Exposure compensation is not used in full manual.
      Af-on is the subject detect. Half press shutter does nothing - full manual again.
      Usually the AF-on will acquire the subject but if it doesn't then single point real fast to get the focal plane either on your subject or very close to it so the subject detect will lock on.
      I have r6mkII setup video also. Other than the ISO setup on a Nikon I try to keep all my cameras very close in functionality and button placement.

      @@WILDALASKA Ah thanks. Yeah that seems frustrating. I've been theorizing switching to Nikon Z8 and 500pf over my R6mii + 100-500 but was wondering what their new tech is like now and wanted to compare the r6mii to Z6iii and understand some of the functionality differences. If you have a Z8 video I'll check it out.

      @AstairVentof 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@daleroyal6449 yeah, I considered it but I figure I can get the 500pf used around the same price and it should be slightly sharper and faster focusing with the additional 1/3 stop of light. Also lighter weight and smaller.

    does Z6III have option to limit video modes?. There are lot of them, and I need switch fast between 3 of them for example: 1080_240p; 4K_120p, 5.4K_60p

      Havent dug in that far yet. Testing AF, BIF, hit rate atm. I'll look into the more quick fly video stuff next week. I will probably make a wildlife centric how-to on filming with the Z6 III soon.

    Since you're manually setting SS and aperture, why not let the ISO float?

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Because it gets it wrong a LOT. IN most situations you don't want 50% grey. You want and overexposure or under exposure from that 50%. AND once you get your exposure where you think it's good then I always suggest shooting a couple 1/3 stops over and under that to make sure you got it right. And finally I like to play with the light for bokeh, colors, definition, etc. It's better to get it right in camera vs post if possible.
      On top of all of that once you start controlling ALL of your exposure settings you start to really learn more about exposure, what works and what doesn't, along with some cool tricks to use in different situations.
