  • Hans Bronsart von Schellendorf (11 February 1830 - 3 November 1913) was a pianist and composer who studied under Franz Liszt.
    Piano Concerto in F-sharp minor, Op. 10 (1872)
    Dedicated to his wife Ingeborg Bronsart
    I. Allegro maestoso
    II. Adagio ma non troppo
    III. Allegro con fuoco
    Michael Ponti, piano and the Westphalian Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Kapp
    The piano concerto was much favoured by Hans von Bülow, who rated the work as the "most significant one of the so-called Weimar school".
    Hans Bronsart von Schellendorf (also called Hans von Bronsart) was born into a Prussian military family, and educated at Berlin University. He studied piano with Adolph Jullack. He went to Weimar in 1853 where he met Franz Liszt and became familiar with all the musicians in Liszt's circle at the time, including Hector Berlioz and Johannes Brahms. It is a measure of his close relationship with Liszt that it was he who played the solo part in the first Weimar performance of Liszt's 2nd Piano Concerto, with the composer conducting. When the concerto was published, Liszt dedicated it to Bronsart. After having trained for several years with Liszt, he worked as a conductor in Leipzig and Berlin, and then took the post of general manager of the Royal Theatre in Hanover from 1867 to 1887. He held a similar post in Weimar from 1887 until his retirement in 1895.
    He met his second wife Ingeborg Bronsart von Schellendorf (née Ingeborg Lena Starck) (1840-1913), also a composer, in Weimar. They married in 1861.
    Bronsart von Schellendorff died in Munich in 1913.

    I've also known this piece for a long time, very powerful and exciting. Too bad he didn't write more big works. His Trio, op 1, was played at Newport a long time ago.

      Is this the only piano concerto he wrote?
      I, too, think it's great for these nearly forgotten but wonderful compositions to get exposure here - with both recordings and scores. So much great music might be lost for ever if it weren't for places like TH-cam, and IMSLP for scores.

    Didn't anybody else record this? Ponti is fine, but I long for another perspective. And the acoustics sound like the inside of a clothes closet.

      Not even Hyperion added it to their Piano Concertos series, so I am afraid this is it for you. You lost me when you said "Ponti is fine".

    Un concerto della mitica scuola di Weimar.....
    Riguardo le note a corredo ,non credo che Brahms facesse parte di un circolo di Liszt,per motivi di ideologia musicale.

    • @bartjebartmans
      @bartjebartmans  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Albert Dietrich, close friends with Brahms was also a close friend of Liszt. Julius Rontgen, also a close friend of Brahms and Grieg visited Liszt. There was more contact between the groups then we tend to think. The difference between them was also of a social nature. Brahms was more on his own and was not interested in a cult following Liszt so much enjoyed and thrived in. It is pretty much the difference between introverted (Brahms, Schumann etc.) and extroverted (Liszt, Wagner, etc.) A question of temperament.

    • @fulviopolce9785
      @fulviopolce9785 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sarà....ma per me Brahms e Liszt erano culturalmente diversi e non facevavo certo circolo fra loro.C'era rispetto ,ma nulla più.Schumann peggio ancora....
      Un saluto.
