That's really interesting man. I glad they decided to stick with the RB26DETT instead! In fact, I would have been wrapped if the R35 had an engine based off the RB platform. Almost like what Ford did over the years with it's 6cyl's which resulted in the mighty Barra, but a Nissan RB update... Although the R35 ended up with a monster of an engine anyway, I just would have liked to see what Nissan could have done with the RB platform

In 2012 I was fortunate enough to visit Global Auto in Japan, where they treated me to a drive in and photoshoot of 1/18 V-Spec II N1 BNR34’s ever made, which was bone stock outside of NISMO side skirt extensions, rear bumper extensions and blue TE37’s. When you have an experience like that, it kind of makes every other GT-R you experience feel kinda meh!

I may be wrong here Andrew, but in the R33 GTR manual it states that there is two methods of changing from 4wd to 2wd. One is remove propeller shaft of course. The other is to remove air evacuation connector, depress brake pedal 5 times within 10 sec after placing the ignition switch to ON position. The warning lamp for 4wd will now flash twice per second. This method has been used for cars on dyno in Japan and other places.. When checking on internet forums, there is even guys who have confirmed that there is no preload on the front wheels with the car in the air on hoist. I have tried this method myself on my R33. I have also wired a switch on the connector so it is easier to use.

Great content! But a little more research into the disabling the 4wd on R33 GT-R would if been good so people have the correct information before they go pulling shafts. The factory service manual on page 18 shows the instruction on how to do this process correctly and is used by Japanese tuners when dynoing.
I built a custom atessa torque split controller that would enable this mode during startup when you flick a switch. It simulated the correct process from the manual and worked very well on my R33 GT-R.
There are so may more features built into these GT-R’s and their ECU’s that were so ahead of their time. Nistune has come a long way to keeping things looking stock and having modern control over the ECU.
Looking forward to more articles like this to correct the myths that have become the norm over time. Keep up the good work!

There is still ways to put a R33 GTR in RWD. Used to do it to mine and never had an issue.. there is a plug under the dash ( orange/yellow plug ) unplug it, start the gtr, tap the brake 3 times and it’s RWD. Never had any issues even going back into AWD.. for R34 GTR, we just pull the fuse out from the engine bay fuse box and it was RWD.. never had issues doing it also.. I just wouldn’t recommend doing for dyno runs, burnouts, no problems haha

You still need to throw atlest 20k on the short block of an N1 block to keep them intact at 1000hp reliabley and this is not including headwork. And then a decent turbo kit and fuel system. The stuff isn't cheap by the time you are making 750+ hp

R35 is still in production. This allows the used units more affordable than the much earlier JDM skyline gtr, which has become rare and collectible.
R35 uses a rear mounted automatic twin clutch transmission matted to a 3.8litre V6 engine. The running gear provides less vibration and a much better throttle response. So therfore, its a easier car to drive for daily commutes.

Funfact about the colors. All 19 R34 Z-Tunes except one are silver, which is named "Z-Tune-Silver". If you search for the color-code, you'll find "KY0".
If you look with the Code alone, you'll find the "Sporty Silver" for all other Nissan-products except the Skylines...

My biggest pet peeve is that people use the Skyline GT-R Badge for all GT-R's. The 32, 33 and 34 have one badge. And the R35 has its own unique badge. It's slightly different, but still different.

I thought the R33 400r would make an appearance in the rare section, they came with a special RB that wasn't a RB26DETT
