I’ll state this right up front - sandwich chains CANNOT compete with the mom and pop sub shops. Not even close. I’m from Jersey and Delaware Subs (closed) in Atlantic City and White House Subs also in AC are how I rank all other subs by. My uncle also had his own sub shop in Ocean City called Trader’s Deli which was good. My grandfather would get up early and help make the potato salad fresh each day. Special shout out to Sack O’ Subs in south Jersey as well especially for their cheesesteaks!
The worst imitation “Italian sub” I’ve ver had was from Jersey Mike’s. Absolute garbage. I’ve never given them any business since.

  • @sonyafox3271
    @sonyafox3271 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I hope my little town gets a Fire House Subs, right now, the best place to get a sub is a local pizza place, so, options are limited. I loved Subway and, it was one of those places, I could do everyday. But, a few years before the pandemic began they started going down hill, especially the ones close to me currently. Not only did they stop paying attention to detail in the bread, but, I was started getting sub rolls where they cooked of baked a little longer where the dough got completely done, that’s enough to make one’s head turn. But, then, the produce looked limp and was anything but, fresh, the brown color on the lettuce and tomatoes, anyone could plainly see. The one thing that’s also important on a Italian sub is a good vinaigrette, whether it’s a good Italian dressing (not creamy, vinegar base there is also a red wine Italian dressing as well) or just a few splashes of of simple red wine vinegar.

No surprise here with Jersey Mike's at #1. I grew up on the East Coast eating "hoagies". Now living in upper Midwest, finding an even remotely suitable substitute always left me disappointed. Subway.......ha!!! Don't make laugh! But then, a miracle, a savior, a prayer answered, an oasis found...Jersey Mike's started popping up in the Chicago area. I looked into them and found out that they actually started up in Jersey. O.K......close enough to Philly that they might actually know what they're doing. So I went there....ordered the "Classic Italian" on white, light oregano and light oil and vinegar. IT - TOOK - ME - HOME!! Hint : if your order it "Mikes Way" , they will really really pour on the oil and vinegar. Things get really messy and soggy, unless your into that sort of thing. When I saw they were slicing the coldcuts right there in front of me, I knew I was in the right place. But, the thing that I actually love the most from JM's is the "Philly" cheese steak. They are the ONLY place that does 'em right other than getting one in the Philadelphia. Order it on white, straight up ( no veggies!!! ) , double meat, no sauce, no peppers. Trust me, THAT'S a Philly Cheese Steak! (well, o.k. , maybe with peppers, hehehe).

      @jjbud3124 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm from NJ and I agree on the Philly cheesesteak. Who puts peppers on a cheesesteak? Onions should be fried and not raw. The only real problem I've found, not living in the NJ/Philly area any more is I have never, ever found an Italian roll like you can get there. I used to pick them up at an Italian deli from a big barrel. They came in fresh every morning. That's what I'm used to having for a hoagie roll or a cheesesteak. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and only 5-6 inches long. Best rolls ever. There were none of those soft-crusted "Italian" rolls like they seem to have around here. Oh crap. I think I'm going to have to get us a couple of cheesesteaks.

Ive tried many on these and mostly agree, but if I made up this list, this would be my order
    --
I will get these two anytime I want a hoagie
1 Wawa - Why would anyone ever buy a grab and go hoagie? It takes under 2 minutes to get a fresh one. Order it exactly how you like it with pickles and peppers on the side at the touch screen, and by the time you pay for it, it is ready.
2 Jimmy Johns - Never disappoints. Unfortunately, many nearby locations closed during covid and never reopened.
--- I will get these two if my first two are not closer
3 Primos - Could be number one, but it has sesame seeds - Yuck I am allergic to these. Very few options for non-seeded rolls.
4 Jersey Mikes - Good, but just too sloppy of a hoagie. Bring a bib to eat it, and a fork for the scraps.
-- I have not tried these
Publix - Not local to me - Have not tried, but want to.
Potbelly - Too many other options between here and there. Eventually I'll try it
Which Wich - Never seen it
    Lennys - huh?
    Penn Station - where?
    -- Avoid these
5 Subway - Ubiquitous, you know exactly what you will get. Good enough if all else fails.
6 Quiznos - Didn't all of these stores go out of business?
7 Firehouse - The worst hoagie ever. PERIOD. Flavorless. All bread, very Little meat cheese or veggies. Bread tasted like plain white wonder bread. Reminded me of the sandwiches that my mother put in my lunchbox in grade school. YUCK I only ate the whole thing because I was hungry and did not want to go back out to find something else. Never again.

It’s just local to Calgary and surrounding area, however, Spolumbos is absolutely fantastic, particularly their signature sandwich, the Special. 😋 They also make the best sausages.

Glad to hear they're still doing well. I'm originally from Calgary, after we moved we used to bring back sausages from Spolumbos whenever we'd go to visit family, but its been years.

@@kevinclapson, absolutely. They seem to be doing very well. :) They've been in their current large location at 1308 9 Ave SE for quite some time and used to be at a much smaller deli-sized location further down the street, so depeding on how long it's been for you, you may know their current location.

Well you forgot the number one sub / sandwich chain ever. DiBella's from the Rochester New York area. They are without a doubt the absolute best. And while Jersey Mikes is good, it doesn't hold a candle to DiBella's.

@@raymichalak724 Thank you! Primo's is the bar. Pub Subs are comparable to Subway garbage. I find that most people that think Pub Subs are the best have never had a real hoagie, or any quality Italian sandwich beyond the border of FL.

My late father used to get Italian subs from Publix, and he always got it with Publix-brand meats. We always have found that Boar's Head meats are always too salty - ALL of them, even the "low-sodium" varieties! It baffles me how such a mediocre outfit got to be so popular.

Jersey Mike's is the best by far. Mikes way with cherry pepper relish, and never any mayo or mustard (doesn't go on a Italian sub).....Fresh Parm rolls, freshly sliced meats, and so huge!!! My hub and I split a small and are full!! Recommend!

I'm astounded that most of these places don't have Miami area locations. I get InNOut because their owner is a goofy broad, who answers to no one (sometimes shareholders and boards are good things) not being here, but these people are dealing in sandwiches that are quick and healthier than most fast food. Also quality control when you're dealing in deli meats and cheese isn't really a problem. Lord knows we have enough strip malls.

Issues: Including Subway but ignoring the far better Togos seems clearly misguided. Second issues, is including Publix. If you're gonna include supermarkets every one near me from Ralphs, to Vons, to Sprouts makes higher quality italian subs and I now several have Boar's Head meat too. Also normally sliced to order as well with better bread.

  • @jimpern

I'm not an Italian sub person, but my favorite sub chain has always been Blimpie, which you did not include. Admittedly, they have become as hard to find as Quizno's, which you did include. I also like Jersey Mike's and Firehouse, while I have found Jimmy John's and Subway to be both highly overrated.

Can only get Jersey Mikes, Primo and Subway in my area. Jersey is good but the prices are harsh. Primo is too salty. Subway BMT is ok because of the veggies. I don't like too much meat. Personal taste.

I would say Publix Italian < Jersey Mike’s < Boar’s Head Italian. Jersey Mike’s downside is absolutely the price though. Even the most expensive sub at Publix (the Cheesesteak) is a touch cheaper than Jersey Mike’s cheapest sub I believe

spicy italian is still my go to Sub if I set foot in Subway. I ate a foot long as my work meal when I worked at Taco Time, add that and walking to work and I managed to lose quite a bit of weight. Plus the sandwich artist that worked at the one I frequented always served me and we'd shoot the shit as he worked on my sub.

I like Subway. All you need to do is have them put on what you like and it's just the way you want it, toasted or not, more meat or not (more meat just brings the price up closer to the more expensive places). Personally, their 6-inch BMT is just right for me. Any more meat or a bigger sandwich and I wouldn't be able to finish it. When I order a Subway Italian BMT just the way I like it, it tastes not very different from Jersey Mikes ordered just how I like it.
