I even read in a few places that Ginger sometimes had a "ghost tapper" that dubbed Ginger's taps into the soundtracks. Two of the ghost tappers mentioned were Hermes Pans and Mariam Nelson. Whereas Eleanor Powell had years of ballet and gymnastics in addition to tap so Eleanor was able to be more creative in her routines especially when it came to turns and therefore was able to create many many different types of solo numbers.

Astaire must have seen something in her that met his expectations when it came to a dancing partner. As everybody could tell, she was a good a dancer even without ballet training, and she was a great actress too. In 1941, Gingers received the Oscar for best actress, Kitty Foyle, against Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, and Joan Fontaine, also without any kind of special training. Then she went back to make more movies with Astaire, who apparently could not find anyone capable of keeping up with him in front of the cameras. As for dubbing the tap dancing post filming, everyone was doing it, Rogers, Kelly, Astaire, Garland, O'Connor, Bolger, Liza Minelli, you name it.
You said that so beautifully, thank you! I also think that Fred was quite mesmerized with her and not just for the fact that they had been together for a while back in the day. I think he was just really happy dancing with her and that shows on the screen in my opinion. She was the only one able and willing to keep up with his working ethic for a prolonged time and she made their dances beautiful and joyful. That is why I enjoy watching them dance together the most, it feels like genuine happiness and affection and that is just as captivating as someone with amazing technique. 😊

She was a good dancer, but not so terrific that you couldn't feel you, too, could dance like her if you had the chance. And the Astaire-Rogers partnership said to audiences, look, hang in there, trust in your love, and somehow you will make it through.Not a bad message in hard ties.
By 1930s standards they might have been deemed too thin. Look at the legs of Busby Berkeley's chorines in 'Lullaby of Broadway', for instance. We think of the 1920s in terms of androgynous jazz babies, but the legs of, say, girls in a precision chorus often appear quite stout.
Ginger Rogers was one of the greatest actresses, dancers, and singers of the 1930's. Tap dancing is a lost art. I wish it could be brought back. I love watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies. FANTASTIC ❤️

It was NOT supposed to be Ginger and she did NOT put on a ballet costume in the movie. She actually hated the scene. I have seen the movie on DVD, have you? Maybe not.

Really? I never saw Ginger dance backwards...are you sure you saw her dance backwards? I think that is just a myth that a group think mentality has bought into. If anything she danced sideways and around Fred sometimes hitting poor Fred in the face with her overly ornamented costumes. I have reviewed her films and I don't see her dancing backwards except for a couple of seconds of transitioning between choreographed movements. If you could tell me where a can find at least five different videos of Ginger dancing backwards while Fred dances forward I'll eat my words.
The only time we see what Ginger can do on her own and it's exciting and brilliant. Plus it is the only time ever we see those great legs uncovered so as to see the full movement of the routine and her feet often hidden by sumptuous gowns. Thank you for this. I love this number.

This scene reminds me of the great scene in Stage Door, when she and Ann Miller are rehearsing a fast routine and one guy asks them if they're rehearsing a tap number. Just 3 years earlier Ruby Keeler performed a tap routine in 42nd Street the was considered impressive hoofing as she flailed her arms about and clogged humorously as if stamping out a burning rug. Now here's Ginger making tap look smooth and classy with her body one tight package moving naturally... it begs the question -- did tap dance evolve on the silver screen in such a short time, or was this Ginger's trend setting style?
Oh, was that a "burning rug" Ruby Keeler was trying to stamp out with all of that galloping? I thought she was nailing down the floor with her feet. I can't imagine anyone who knew about quality tap dancing would have taken that seriously. Then there was Eleanor Powell who came out around this same time.
Too true about Eleanor Powell... she's still a treat to watch in my book. And talk about perfect dancer's legs and a cute mug! There was also Ann Miller who was said to be the fastest tap dancer. From what I've learned since that last post of mine (and in Ruby's defense), a lot apparently had to do with sound technology in1932 - it as still the early years of talkies. Just by 1935 film companies learned they got better results by sound editing and shooting a tap dancer to a playback -- without the tap cleats and worry about special tap floors, floor mic'ing problems or a dancer falling. The dancer would overdub the tap routine with real tap shoes in a sound studio in post-production. It's interesting how rapidly the studios learned how to work with sound in the 30s.
@Madd Dogg Completely agree. This was choreographed by Hermes Pan, Astaire's primary collaborator in revolutionizing dance starting in 1933. For all practical purposes, they taught Ginger to dance and I enjoy watching her continue to improve as the films progress. Add in her acting ability and it's easy to understand why she became a huge star and why we still enjoy her today.

A lot of it was down to the influence of Bill Robinson, whose smooth and graceful tapping tamped down the clog-dance, Irish-jig tendency. The girl in this clip, Jenni LeGon, was signed by MGM to do a cameo in 'Broadway Melody of 1936' but was dropped in favor of Powell.
And the interesting thing is that she only learned how after she and Fred Astaire started making movies together. Ginger Rogers had little to no formal training as a dancer when she and Fred made "Flying Down to Rio," and Fred candidly admitted years later that at the time, "She faked it an awful lot. She couldn't tap, and she couldn't do this and that... but Ginger had style and talent and improved as she went along." She certainly did improve as she went along, and by the time this movie was made, she was clearly a hell of a good tap dancer, and while she wasn't technically the most skilled or accomplished of Fred's dancing partners, she was far and away his best dancing partner. The two of them had chemistry that has never been equaled, and they complimented each other superbly well, which is why no other studio ever made a series of musicals that paired the same two performers in so many films.
What's interesting here is that this, after several Astaire and Rogers pictures, was when Ginger was finally seen as good enough to have her own dance solo. For all the talk that she did "everything Fred did, except backwards and in high heels," the reality is, she wasn't _remotely_ the dancer Astaire was, and in fact, she wasn't even nearly the most skilled dancer that Fred was partnered with on screen. What Ginger was though, was by far the best actress, and the one with whom he had the best romantic chemistry. She was good enough a dancer to keep up with him, even though she wasn't nearly as trained or as skilled as Rita Hayworth, Eleanor Powell, Cyd Charisse and others. And as time went on, Ginger got better and better, and by this point, she was good enough a dancer in her own right finally to have a solo in one of their pictures.

The only time we see what Ginger can do on her own and it's exciting and brilliant. Plus it is the only time ever we see those great legs uncovered so as to see the full movement of the routine and her feet often hidden by sumptuous gowns. Thank you for this. I love this number.
Ginger was never again asked to do another tap dance solo in the movies. Eleanor Powell took care of that.

The biggest musical she did post-Oscar, 'Lady in the Dark', had rudimentary choreography. 'The Barkleys' must have reintroduced the now-Junoesque Ginger to muscles she forgot she had. All the more credit to her for accepting the reunion and rekindling the old magic. What a trouper.

Ginger should have had a solo in every movie she did with Fred, as he always did. It would have shown her off her own dancing skills more. She was more than just Fred's partner. This scene reminds me of the great scene in Stage Door, when she and Ann Miller are rehearsing a fast routine and one guy asks them if they're rehearsing a tap number. She says "No we just got a bad case of the DTs."

Ginger sure raised the bar in 1936. Imagine. Just 3 years earlier Ruby Keeler performed a tap routine in 42nd Street the was considered impressive hoofing as she flailed her arms about and clogged humorously as if stamping out a burning rug. Now here's Ginger making tap look smooth and classy with her body one tight package moving naturally... it begs the question -- did tap dance evolve on the silver screen in such a short time, or was this Ginger's trend setting style?
Oh, was that a "burning rug" Ruby Keeler was trying to stamp out with all of that galloping? I thought she was nailing down the floor with her feet. I can't imagine anyone who knew about quality tap dancing would have taken that seriously. Then there was Eleanor Powell who came out around this same time.
Too true about Eleanor Powell... she's still a treat to watch in my book. And talk about perfect dancer's legs and a cute mug! There was also Ann Miller who was said to be the fastest tap dancer. From what I've learned since that last post of mine (and in Ruby's defense), a lot apparently had to do with sound technology in1932 - it as still the early years of talkies. Just by 1935 film companies learned they got better results by sound editing and shooting a tap dancer to a playback -- without the tap cleats and worry about special tap floors, floor mic'ing problems or a dancer falling. The dancer would overdub the tap routine with real tap shoes in a sound studio in post-production. It's interesting how rapidly the studios learned how to work with sound in the 30s.

Completely agree. This was choreographed by Hermes Pan, Astaire's primary collaborator in revolutionizing dance starting in 1933. For all practical purposes, they taught Ginger to dance and I enjoy watching her continue to improve as the films progress. Add in her acting ability and it's easy to understand why she became a huge star and why we still enjoy her today.

A lot of it was down to the influence of Bill Robinson, whose smooth and graceful tapping tamped down the clog-dance, Irish-jig tendency. Here he is in 'Hooray for Love' (1935):

Robinson was a friend and mentor of Eleanor Powell; he taught her his step dance and was godfather to her son. The girl in this clip, Jenni LeGon, was signed by MGM to do a cameo in 'Broadway Melody of 1936' but was dropped in favor of Powell.
Nice-When given the chance to shine Ginger could tap up a storm.
And the interesting thing is that she only learned how after she and Fred Astaire started making movies together. Ginger Rogers had little to no formal training as a dancer when she and Fred made "Flying Down to Rio," and Fred candidly admitted years later that at the time, "She faked it an awful lot. She couldn't tap, and she couldn't do this and that... but Ginger had style and talent and improved as she went along."
She certainly did improve as she went along, and by the time this movie was made, she was clearly a hell of a good tap dancer, and while she wasn't technically the most skilled or accomplished of Fred's dancing partners, she was far and away his best dancing partner. The two of them had chemistry that has never been equaled, and they complimented each other superbly well, which is why no other studio ever made a series of musicals that paired the same two performers in so many films.

What's interesting here is that this, after several Astaire and Rogers pictures, was when Ginger was finally seen as good enough to have her own dance solo. For all the talk that she did "everything Fred did, except backwards and in high heels," the reality is, she wasn't _remotely_ the dancer Astaire was, and in fact, she wasn't even nearly the most skilled dancer that Fred was partnered with on screen. What Ginger was though, was by far the best actress, and the one with whom he had the best romantic chemistry. She was good enough a dancer to keep up with him, even though she wasn't nearly as trained or as skilled as Rita Hayworth, Eleanor Powell, Cyd Charisse and others. And as time went on, Ginger got better and better, and by this point, she was good enough a dancer in her own right finally to have a solo in one of their pictures.
Looks like a challenge of dancing fast without falling over there. Impressive skill, especially in high heels.
