Faaaaaantastic video even if this doesn’t end up helping me with my issue. I am going to try the key wiggling trick this evening after work but I took my whole mower apart today during lunch and couldn’t see anything obvious. I confirmed my motor was good with a batter and jumpers like you showed, all connections look good, I’m betting it’s that silly key. I don’t own a voltmeter but it wouldn’t be a bad thing to own I suppose. Really really well put together instructional video here.
Thanks for this. With any luck you will have saved my bacon. I'll find out tomorrow. FYI: I'm a retired educational technology specialist. My professional opinion is that this video is very well done.
I love battery powered options for some things but you need a small pre cleaned yard before cutting with one of these things. You also can expect to replace the battery packs about every 2 years at a pretty high price. My Honda powered mower just turned 18 last month and is still going with only blade replacements every 4 to 5 years. I just can't justify the expense for the ease of not having to pull a rope to start. Great intro video to trouble shooting and very well made. Thanks for taking us along and take care.
I couldn't disagree more, and I'm not sure where you're getting your info from re: battery replacement. I bought a 7 year old battery powered mower for $20, with the original battery in it. It mows my lawn just fine, and I have a fairly large lawn. There's very little maintenance needed aside from the usual blade sharpening. I don't know what kind of things y'all are mowing that you need so much power. It's grass. It should cut easy if your blade is sharp.
Thanks for your comment. I wish I could say I've had the same experience, but unfortunately, I have not. My luck with batteries has not been good at all. With that said, I'm sure battery technology will be one of the most significant advancements over the next few years. There's no doubt it's here to stay and will quickly become the dominant power source over the next few year. Thanks for watching.
@@baldeagle242 Well to be fair the reason I'm watching this video is because I have now started having trouble with the charging system, ha. The first thing I figured I should do is replace the battery, and that seemed to fix the trouble for half the summer, but now it's not charging again. So I think maybe what happened is the new battery lasted so long that I didn't notice that it's not charging!
There is such a shortage of diagnostic testing and service of these ion lithium battery mowers. We need more like yours with in depth repairs on various popular makes and models since the manufacturers are not making service manuals available. Thanks for your video.
I appreciate the feedback. I plan to make more videos on these as they come into the shop. The biggest issue is finding parts for them. The aftermarket parts suppliers are not there like they are on gas powered equipment and the OEMs are keeping prices so high in most cases you can buy another new mower for the parts cost. 🤦🏻
@@baldeagle242 A neighbor just gave me his older Craftsman. He got frustrated with it as it had (3) 12V batteries in series with a few bad terminal crimps, which caused bad cells.I spent about $60 to replace the three batteries, replaced the badly crimped jumpers, sharpened the blade. I just saw your video on troubleshooting for cordless mowers.EXCELLENT. I have an older Black & Decker 36v cordless mower that has been great. I replaced the three 12 v batteries a couple of years ago and it ran great until I let my daughter use my mower this summer for her large lawn. I fear she let grass get too high and maybe cut it when wet.The mower charges fine and all three batteries fully charge. Mower starts and runs fine but after 10-15 minutes it starts to lose power and sounds like it’s not charged. I was able to cut my lawn yesterday and it lasted for 30 minutes, but not giving off much power. I was told even though batteries are fairly new and charge fine, they maybe won’t hold a charge and I should replace. This is 20 year old mower and would like to get few more years out of. Should I take the chance and just replace the batteries again. They are expensive ($100 for 3) but it would be better than buying new mower. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Thank you. Jim R
@@JamesReilly-l8x First thing to check is to make sure there is nothing wrapped around the blade and make sure the blade is sharp. Taking a crack at replacing a battery on a mower - this video was helpful. Almost got it. If there is a bad or loose connection the blade may add just enough resistance and vibration to cause this. I would first check the safety switches to make sure they are not breaking contact and then check the electrical connections.

Hello from Australia I really love this video! So informative without all the blah blah blah, straight to the point! Any thoughts on a 18v Ozito battery powered mower, it turns and the blade moves about 1cm then flicks back and the mower shuts off. Like it tries to start then stops.. when you manually move the blade it does make a clunk clunk clunk sound and jumps but moves easily. Brushes seem fine and its only had about 10hrs or less on the motor since new.
It's tuff to say without looking at it. It could be a loose connection or possibly the speed controller. Does the motor turn freely with direct power to it?

Great video - really well explained. As I picked a used B&D CM2043 mower up for $50, without the key; battery and charger, I took a bit of a gamble (by also buying a new battery and charger). As it turns out, crickets. I'm going through the various troubleshooting items you stated - that being said, is the missing safety key, simply a jumper connection that connects the internal switch into the circuit, i.e., is it okay for testing, to simply jumper the two switch connections together with a couple of alligator clips where the key would normally plug in? Thanks!
Thanks for recording this! My sister asked me to fix her 40v Greenworks mower and the issue is that blade II isn't spinning. Any thoughts on what might be going on and if it's worth fixing?
Definitely some good info. I have a worx brand 40v mower but cannot find where to purchase the speed control board. Any tips as to where I might be able to locate?
I have not had the privilege of working on a Worx mower, but I have found that many of the parts in these types of mowers are interchangeable between other brands. If you can get a visual of it and compare it to others, that may be your best bet. Unfortunately, not many aftermarket parts are available for these battery mowers yet. Have you tried contacting Worx directly?
Great well-done video! Thanks for all the details without the fluff. Where did you buy the speed controller from? I have the Black & Decker version of this mower, CM2045, and need to replace it.
My problem was definitely that key. I just removed the connectors and added spades to the ends that way i can still disconnect it like the original key
@@drums7398 I appreciate that, but currently, I don't have anything set up for direct payments like that. I'd appreciate if you'd share my channel with friends or family members that you think may find value from my content. I truly appreciate it.
Thanks for stopping by the Baldeagle242 channel. I don't get very many electric mowers in my shop, but if I do, I will cover it for sure. Most of the components and methods to troubleshoot the Swift mower should be similar to this mower. Thanks again, and I hope to see you around on future videos.
If, when attaching the motor to a DC battery there is a slight spark, but won’t spin, is it safe to assume the motor is bad? Mower is the same model as shown. Thanks for a great video!
Found the issue! For those that might also get stuck when the motor won’t pass the test as described in the video, the wire in the brush he describes at 3:38 had disconnected from the housing
Do you have the part number for the orange key. I found that the connector that goes to the safety key is a little melted on the left side. Also the part number for the switch
Sorry, I though I had this in the video description but I see it's not there. 🤷♂️ Here is a link for the key. 🦅 www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRKYXQQ/?tag=eagle0f1-20
If you go to Black and Deckers website you can purchase them there. I’ve also seen resellers selling them on eBay and Amazon from time to time. I would caution you to check all other possible issues before replacing the speed controller. I’ve yet to find one that has truly failed yet. Most of the time it’s something else. Good luck with it and let me know what you find. 🦅🇺🇸
If you haven't already done so confirm your charger is working and try a different battery. Check the connections on the battery and mower for corrosion. What your describing can be as simple as a low or bad battery. If that all checks out good I would pull the cover off and check all of the internal connections and brushes on the motor as well as test it as shown in the video. Through the process of elimination, I would narrow it all the way down to the speed controller. The only other thing I can think of is the catch on the handle safety switch may not be staying engaged but I would think you would hear a click when it disengages. Not sure that will help you find your problem but without looking at it myself that's where I would start with what information you have provided. Good luck with it and thanks for watching.
@@rodolfosilva8478 @baldeagle242 I have the same symptom. You figure it out, Roldofo? My two batteries, switch and motor brushes all test fine. Is there a way to test the speed controller for continuity? I may try jiggling the key around next after it dies just to see if that restarts it.
I'm finding it hard to find Craftsman 40v die hard batteries that aren't 100-200 a battery... can i use black and decker 40v batteries in my craftsman or is there a battery that will work for me that i don't have to spend 300 to get 2 new batteries
The Black and Decker batteries will work fine. There are other less expensive options as well. Here is an affiliate link to one on Amazon. www.amazon.com/dp/B07S1TDR55/?tag=eagle0f1-20
Sir, you mentioned a shut off switch in the handle when in a folded position. But, there was no further mention in the vid. Don't see why such a switch is necessary, but if it is present, would love to check it. Where is that switch located? Thanks
Just picked one of these up off the street. It starts but loses power right away. I press the button and pull the lever and the motor spins but starts slowing down right away. Would that be the starter switch right in the housing of the start button?
@@baldeagle242 copy that. To clarify, when I mean it slows down, it keeps slowing down until it stops, unlike when I release the lever, which causes the motor to stop abruptly. I'll use my car battery and will report back. Thank you sir!
@@edxmon Any updates? I have the same problem, but it isn’t the battery. Mower runs about 3 minutes and seems drained, but the battery isn’t drained. Any suggestions welcome!
Just referred back to your video after seeing it last fall due to a reocurring issue with my 40v B&D version. Like others, it starts then immediately slows to a stop. Tried 3 different batteries which all show a good charge and will run 3 other B&D battery tools. Leaning towards the speed controller also referred to as battery controller on B&D parts list. Any thoughts?
It’s possible that your speed control has an issue. There’s really no good way to test the actual speed controller on these mowers. What I do is check all connections, the brushes and any safety switches first. Through process of elimination I narrow it down to nothing left but the speed control before I replace it. Hopefully this helps. Let me know what you find once you get into it.
That's what I did..process of elimination. I ordered the controller on Monday and hope to have it this week. There really isn't much to these mowers Hope that's the problem. I will let you know. Thanks again!
Some vendors will have basic info on their websites but there really isn’t a lot of info out here yet for cordless equipment. Some people have started putting review videos on Amazon our TH-cam but the accuracy and quality of information provided is hit or miss. I’m not aware of any schools or online courses that focus on this type of equipment yet but I believe there will be some available in the near future. Good luck my friend! It’s a skill that’s worth pursuing right now for sure. 😁👍
Good day again Sir, Just wondering if you have any thoughts on the testing of my B&D 40V Max Lawnmower. I tested the motor, which is fine, as seems to the main switch from a continuity perspective. I had to jerry rig the safety key with a jumper cable, but again, with it installed, the switch seems good. My guess is the Battery Controller, but given the nearly $100 cost here in Canada, thought I'd ask if you knew of any test that I could run on it, to be sure? I know there's a capacitor on the little module, which is something I could replace if I was sure that it was the culprit? Cheers, Mike
I do not know a good way to test the controller directly without going through the process of elimination like I show in this video. I’ve managed to collect a few good ones over the past few years of working on them so I generally just swap them out to eliminate them as bad. Without a know good controller I’m sure there is a way or tester commercially available but I’ve never looked that deep into it.
@@baldeagle242 Thanks for the reply. I went through all of your steps, which led me to think the Battery controller is the issue. Wondering if there is a way to by-pass the controller, to feed volt to the motor - that should verify the battery controller was the problem?
@@baldeagle242 Guess I missed that - I saw how to simply connect direct to the two motor tabs to test the motor, but didn't see how to run through the main switch, by-passing the controller, to enable the battery to run the motor?
My black and decker will run fine without the blade but when I put the blade on it starts up and immediately turns off. I have plenty of battery power. Any suggestions? I eliminated the emergency stop by hooking the wires together. I’m thinking it might be the speed controller.
@@baldeagle242 There's no vibration and the motor brushes look just fine. The speed controller is cracked/broken on the top and held together with what appears to be a black tape of some sort. I'm 75% sure that replacing that will fix the issue. I'll follow up and let you know once I'm able to replace it. Thanks!
@@baldeagle242well it’s been a hot minute but I finally got around to replacing that speed controller. That was definitely the problem. It runs like a champ now. Thanks for the awesome video and keep up the great work.

This one has been challenging to keep up with the product links. They don’t seem to keep more than 1 or 2 in stock and are constantly being backordered. I believe this is the switch you’re looking for on Amazon amzn.to/4c3OZ9c
Everything in the video is very helpfull but it doesn't address my issue. my black and decker will start and spin for a moment and then die out. it will not reach top speed only spins for about 15 to 20 seconds. I have checked all of my batteries and they test fine. I am really scratching my head over here.
+@cliffmonroe2382 I would check to make sure theres nothing wrapped around the shaft under the mower. What you’re describing can happen because of extra resistance from something slowing the blade down. Make sure you completely remove the battery before working under the mower. If it’s a brushed mower (like the one in this video) I’d make sure they aren’t warn or dirty with carbon buildup.

I enjoyed this video. I still can't believe that this electric junk is what we are "evolving" to.
Sad but true! Thanks for watching. 🦅
great video thanks
Thank you. 😁👍
Could you cover the cordless lawn mowers by Swift too?
@scottkeohane7742 thanks for the follow up! I’m glad you figured it out.
Where can I get a replacement safety key?
You are amazing thank you
+We Lift Nation Thank you for taking the time to share your comment! I hope to see you around on future videos. 😊👍
Do you have the part number for the orange key. I found that the connector that goes to the safety key is a little melted on the left side. Also the part number for the switch
Sorry, I though I had this in the video description but I see it's not there. 🤷♂️

i wonder if the batteries are interchangable??if the craftsman battery will work in the black and decker mower, and vice versa>>
Yes, the batteries are interchangeable.
@@baldeagle242 great to know thankyou for getting back i have the black and decker model.in 20 inch cool.
Please can you tell me where I can get the speed controller thank you
If you go to Black and Deckers website you can purchase them there. I’ve also seen resellers selling them on eBay and Amazon from time to time.
I would caution you to check all other possible issues before replacing the speed controller. I’ve yet to find one that has truly failed yet. Most of the time it’s something else. Good luck with it and let me know what you find. 🦅🇺🇸
My black and decker 40v lawn mower turns on for a few seconds and then stops what could be the problem?
@@baldeagle242 thank you for such a fast answer
@@rodolfosilva8478 You're welcome. Let us know what you find once you get a chance to look into it.
Once I put everything back together it worked fine. Must have been clogged with debris or something.

@@baldeagle242 This worked perfect thank you!!!
Sir, you mentioned a shut off switch in the handle when in a folded position. But, there was no further mention in the vid. Don't see why such a switch is necessary, but if it is present, would love to check it. Where is that switch located? Thanks
Sorry for the confusion. This mower doesn’t have a switch like that on it. The switch I was referring to in the video is on some EGO mowers.
@@baldeagle242 Wow! Such a gentleman!
Just picked one of these up off the street. It starts but loses power right away. I press the button and pull the lever and the motor spins but starts slowing down right away. Would that be the starter switch right in the housing of the start button?
Could be a low or bad battery. I'd start with a known good battery and try it again.
There really isn't much to these mowers
Hope that's the problem. I will let you know. Thanks again!
@@shawnmosley8412 There really isn’t much to them. Hopefully this solves your problem. 😁👍
Well that was not it. lol

where do i look for classes on line for troubleshooting cordless outdoor equipment
@wemeanfitness9045 Yes, I show how to do just that in this video.
I’ve not seen that issue yet. Is it possible you have a vibration with the blade on that’s not there without it? Do the motor brushes look good?
@@baldeagle242 There's no vibration and the motor brushes look just fine. The speed controller is cracked/broken on the top and held together with what appears to be a black tape of some sort. I'm 75% sure that replacing that will fix the issue. I'll follow up and let you know once I'm able to replace it. Thanks!
@@baldeagle242well it’s been a hot minute but I finally got around to replacing that speed controller. That was definitely the problem. It runs like a champ now. Thanks for the awesome video and keep up the great work.
@C-Squareds-place You’re welcome. Thanks for letting us know it all worked out. 😁👍
How did you troubleshoot the speed controller
Basically by process of elimination of all other components. There’s no easy way to test them without expensive testing equipment that I’m aware of.
You should do one on a hyper tough 40v 18 inch electric lawnmower no has no video on that
They are all very similar and many of them use the same components.
@@baldeagle242 ok thanks I appreciate that

This one has been challenging to keep up with the product links. They don’t seem to keep more than 1 or 2 in stock and are constantly being backordered.
I believe this is the switch you’re looking for on Amazon amzn.to/4c3OZ9c
@@baldeagle242 link is wrong
Ok, I’ll need more info on which switch you’re looking for.
More reason to buy gas powered motor!!
Bingo! 😉👍
