    I lost my pleco a couple of days ago, he was eating well, but started swimming oddly then sinking down. Immediately checked water, all parameters were fine. From first sign to death was 2 hours. RIP Steve😢

    Bummer, sorry to see/hear this. Did the dead fish also spike your ammonia?
    I had a case of warm water vibrio (not ph but still a bummer.) kill 7
    adult L183s.
    They got it from ramshorn snails in the belly of one... then in less than 16 hours. It's one nasty flesh eating bacteria that's showing up in warm water more and more (according to the local university that tested mine).

      Thats interesting, i added MTS to 2 out of 3 tanks and all fish died in both tanks but oddly the shrimp survived. I added the mts around 9pm and when i woke at 530, they were dead.

  • @CaylorsReptilesAquatics
    @CaylorsReptilesAquatics 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I hate to hear this. Losing a breeding group would be devastating. As you know, many fish are sensitive to water parameters, and maintaining their necessary parameters is a part of good husbandry. As a general rule of thumb, fish that have been in our care a period of time and die, it’s due to our mistake. Conversely, when new fish die, it’s generally an issue with the fish. Amazing how many post pics of new dead fish and look for something they did that caused it. Keep the faith brother 👍🏼

      Is it possible to buy a sick fish and not know it and possibly it dies a few months down the road . Would that be considered our fault?

    • @CaylorsReptilesAquatics
      @CaylorsReptilesAquatics 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rae_ray8944 definitely. But hopefully we would see symptoms long before. Some late stage symptoms, usually parasitic gut or systemic viral, can make it difficult. I worm all my fish, if they weren’t done so by the seller. I worm twice a year like we do other live pets; dogs, cats, etc. Great question!

    There's a big difference between accepting reality and self flagellation: the latter is hardly realistic at all. Not everything that happens was ever under your control. That is the arrogance of self blame, centering yourself in the middle of the universe for everything at fault, even things well beyond your control.
    I appreciate your knowledge and experience as a fish keeper, however. This lesson is invaluable, even if it is a tragic one. I would not have thought of PH crash being the cause of something like this.

    I feel ur pain Malik! I had to learn the hard way also!ph and kh was 0! The immediate answer was bicarbonate soda! I learn that it takes 7grams of calcium to turn 1 gram of ammonia into nitrates! So if u over stock, or just feed to much, you can have a ph crash!

    Try and set up a tank with undergravel filter. You will thank me. I will not set up a tank without it. Sponge filter is ok for breeding pairs but a colony of so many in your tank .....I am like wt....

    Are phosphates the main reason for the pH crash? Or is it just build up of nutrients in the water column and substrate? How do you prevent the build up of phosphates? Are water changes not sufficient?

    Save you guys some time, PH levels fell to 5 none of the other fish showed signs but plecos died. Moral of the story check water levels often. IMO crushed coral will help make water stay in a more “stable” range.

    I feel your pain. You know what you are doing you are a knowledgeable dedicated aquarist. You give one hundred percent in the care of your stock. However anything That is Mechanical chemical or biological has the potential to become ten minutes pregnant. Life will throw curveballs. We can only hope to correctly troubleshoot problems early enough to positively help the situation. One two or more tiny problems can very quickly snowball into a serious situation. We can only do our best and hopefully learn from the experiences. You inspire us all by simply and honestly keeping us all in the loop. You are one of the best of us. We all are enriched by the sharing of your journey In fish keeping. Any fish be it a $250+ pleco or a $1 endler is safer in your care. You and well I will do a water change sometime later if I get around to it! Is not in your makeup. You always give your absolute best.

    Sponge filters are great til they aren't.... PERIOD! Ur better off partioning off a small section of ur tanks and using an internal style filtration with mechanical, biological and some chemical.....it's time consuming but very will worth it.

    I'm gonna share a secret with u big boss....I keep really big fish one that's basically zoological status and probably the biggest of his species in NA. U gotta check pH daily!!! Not once a week or something like that but DAILY! And if ur kits or reagents are old toss them and get new ones! That is what I do damn near every day for my fish. they are in a 1500 gal system with dual 55 gal overhead wet/dry towers with a boat load of bioballs and some lava rocks utilizing TRUE wet/dry style filtration that is gravity returned and I still run a pair of 4" air stones on an alita air pump. That should help with any pH lowering but I have several massive pieces of dw in there and it's on a drip system and we do have hard water locally, regardless I test daily at worst every two days Max!
