Great question. Normally excessive heat in cams comes from lack of lubrication. That can be low or no oil or really dirty oil. We see it a lot with bikes that don’t get the oil changed enough.
@@highlandcycles my Ttr250 that's the old school bike I noticed but I can't remember which on was blued.. I wanna say exhaust. It's the bike i was asking you about to rebuild. Lots of hours on bike. @@highlandcycles that was gonna be my next question. I think I remember the lob looking smooth and good but just heat colored. I am gonna pull the clutch cover and look at the oil screen. And there is a bolt the manual talked about for checking oil pressure while the bike is running, might check that too
2003 Yamaha YZ450F Spark Plug torque is 9.4 ft. lbs. I just did mine and checked my manual. I would also like to hear your thoughts on proper starting procedure as I currently am a first time owner and rebuilding mine. The manual says to absolutely NOT to pump the throttle prior to kicking or when kicking, but I have seen some guys do it and some guys not. So, I am wondering if a person really needs pump the throttle or would the motorcycle start up with out pumping. It would be interesting to run a test doing both methods.
So, I have found that when the bike is cold and the jetting is right, they really like a couple squirts of the accelerator pump to get started. Now, once the bike is warm, you don't want to give it any throttle at all. That again is if the bike is tuned correctly in my opinion.
So is the .003 the least amount of clearance meaning that valve is worn more than the valves with .006 clearance? As I undersand it as they wear the valve clearance reduces? Also the specs for my 2012 yz450f are Intake - 0.10-0.15 mm Exhaust - 0.20-0.25 mm
You are right about the differences and that the valves wear up into the head. And those specs are in mm and I was using inches. Mainly because that’s how I’ve always done it but the end result is the same.
@@highlandcycles Good deal. Thanks for your help! I'm about to do mine tomorrow & this was very helpful. It was straightforward to the point without all the excessive blabbering like most others as well as entertaining. Liked & Subscribed!!! Look forward to see more related videos in the future.

@@army96261 We charge 1.5 hrs for adjustment. That is $135 for us. Plus shims. But here is the deal. Overhead cam motors don't tick when valves are loose unless they are WAY loose and that usually means something bad. I would have someone listen to the thing that knows them before you buy it. So, I have found that when the bike is cold and the jetting is right, they really like a couple squirts of the accelerator pump to get started. Now, once the bike is warm, you don't want to give it any throttle at all. That again is if the bike is tuned correctly in my opinion.
Is it the mark after the the 2 Mark's that look like an h or is it the opposite mark 180 out?
2017civic hatchback it’s the one right after the H looking one. The H is the ignition timing mark.
What brand is your feeler gauge set and where did You get it
K&L and through a yamaha dealer. They were made specifically for these motors and they worn great in a bunch of them.
So one of my valve shims is set to as small as I can go and it’s still tight I went from a 160 to a 120 what does that mean?
It means you need to replace your valves
Should I replace all five or just my intake valves and thank you so much man you have helped me so much
How well would the bike run if the valve shims aren’t put in?
Not good
Will this be the same as a 2006 yz450f?
Yes
Does it matter what brand of shims you get for your valves?
No. But I use the hot cams ones.
I see you're in Colorado. Where at?
Montrose
“Oh well…..it’s still running” 😂
Good vid bro! Do you have a vid for replacing fork seals on a YZF?
Thanks. Yeah, here’s the link th-cam.com/video/S5iy1xfGwG8/w-d-xo.html
Good morning Highland.I am thinking into buying a Dirtbike How often the valves must be adjusted normally on this type of bike?
Should be checked every 30-40 hrs of operation
Would the process be the same on a 03 yz 450
Yep, just easier because the frame is smaller
i litteraly had the same exact problem on my 2006 450
Cool video hope the customer bought some chain lube on collection😁👍
I am sure they did. This was a while ago.
No sealant on the valve cover gasket?
No. As long as its in good shape you don’t need it.
highlandcycles good to know thanks.
Gracias por comparir tu trabajo
De nada
I like your videos, did this one need a valve adjustment?
I didn’t. We checked it and it was ok
Oh, okay, I thought you said intake was over 6 thousands. Better than being to tight.
So is the .003 the least amount of clearance meaning that valve is worn more than the valves with .006 clearance? As I undersand it as they wear the valve clearance reduces?
Also the specs for my 2012 yz450f are
Intake - 0.10-0.15 mm
Exhaust - 0.20-0.25 mm
You are right about the differences and that the valves wear up into the head. And those specs are in mm and I was using inches. Mainly because that’s how I’ve always done it but the end result is the same.
@@highlandcycles so then say my intake clearance is 0.08mm then I would need a smaller shim to bring it out to 0.10-0.15mm to be within my spec?
Brian Bevans correct.
@@highlandcycles Good deal. Thanks for your help! I'm about to do mine tomorrow & this was very helpful. It was straightforward to the point without all the excessive blabbering like most others as well as entertaining. Liked & Subscribed!!! Look forward to see more related videos in the future.
Brian Bevans thanks so much.
Is this same for yfz 450 ?
Yes
Great vid
Thanks.
Anyone know what I'm looking at to get a mechanic to rebuild my yz250f 2002 motor csnr find anything anywhere for these bikes it's crazy and beofte someone tells me it's not worth getting a yz250f 2002 rebuilt yes I know I'm stupid but 😂😬 but something I need to do motor still runs but with 99 hours and very low compression.
All it did was foul out the spark plug i could tell just by when you took it off
yep
That's my go to ratchet
I thought you were gonna show how to adjusted the valves when in fact you only showed how to check them. I liked the video but feels like it should say how to inspect the valves not adjust them lol.
Yeah, I know. I was expecting to need to adjust them. Sorry for the misleading title. I will be doing an adjust one when I get a bike that needs it.
@@highlandcycles I'm looking at buying this 2012 yz450f but the guy says the valves need to be adjusted because they're ticking. I came here to see how much work it would be. I found another video and it seems pretty intense. Just curious how much does something like that cost?
@@army96261 We charge 1.5 hrs for adjustment. That is $135 for us. Plus shims. But here is the deal. Overhead cam motors don't tick when valves are loose unless they are WAY loose and that usually means something bad. I would have someone listen to the thing that knows them before you buy it. There are some things that could be wrong that could cost a bunch of money
@@highlandcycles thanks for the heads up. The guy sent me a 30 second video of a cold start so I can hear it run. I'm gonna post it to this bikers Facebook group I'm apart of and see if anyone has any input. If there's anyway I could send you the video or even just post it on my TH-cam page and have you listen and give me your advice that'd be cool.
Jeffrey OHara yeah. Send it to morgan@highland-cycles.com
Good video man but you should be cleaning everything before you put it back together
so how much would you charge for that job
1 hr. $90
@@highlandcycles You are a saint. My dad was a small engine mechanic and would charge similar rates, so it's nice to see an honest, hardworking person charging an honest rate. If i took my bike into you unable to run, and you gave it back running for $90, I'd be more than happy. Bigger shops charge so much it's insane people actually use them for things like this.
Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching
Love the flag bud!
Thanks
Very inspiring brother thank you!
aprendi hoy como reparar
Bueno
That oil how dark and dirty it was I wouldn’t just suggest top end only poor bottom end as well. Some ppl just ride and never do any maintenance.. poor bike.
So sad
Cool vid, very nice!
Koby Ben Yakar thanks
I have a 08 klx 450 it’s leaking oil out of the top of the valve cover
highlandcycles I have a 08 klx 450 it runs good leaks oil out of the top of the valve cover what could it be
Same spark as Yzfr125 can’t be right surely
Change the video name to checking the valves. There was no shimming or adjusting if anything.
I know. I should do that. I have lots of other videos actually shimming them.
I have a ? About this same bike ok my problem is i in stalled a new water pump ight I know this is going to sound bad after a fresh big bore rebuild new cases all 1000 dallor stage one Tokyo carburetor stage 2 cams Allright back to my fuck up literally as I was taken side cover off I remember that the kick start washer fell down behind the bottom gear ok well I was destracted came back to it next day finshed install crank it up nt thanking nothing of it at all letting ideal war up the I was going to cut it off an check fluid an so forth will as it was idling it just said tenk tenk an shut of ok well now I was like fuck 5000 dallors for the hole rebuild down the dran ok well I fished most of the washer out the bottom end my crank turns over by hand its nt locked up as far as the piston rotates an all but my kick starter looks up as soon as it starts to go down I was like well mabey bad kick start gear ok well I can Possibly bump start it but as of the other day in trying to do that I took of running with it letting out the clutch for it to drop in gear an nothing she continue to roll I was like wtf man then I was like ok let me put it in every gear an she continue to roll like it was in nutreul ther was no lock up in the back tire at all any help would be great im will to pay a 100 dallors through pay pal for atleast some information before splitting the case im am a mechanic an all that an im inclinded on cars trucks suv an done everything I could come to conclusion with with out splitting case is good but any help I watch ur videos with the came timeing basically just like a car timeing an all it was help full thanks any ideas
That sucks but it happens. Unfortunately it probably screwed something up in the transmission. I’m afraid you’re going to have to split the cases again. You might get lucky and find something wrong on that right side and I would check that first but it sounds like something inside. It’s probably not too big of a deal part wise but you’ll have a bunch more time in it.
@@highlandcycles thanks guy i mean I have went over everything possible with out splitting them but crank spins over an I have a free spinning back tire in all gears no drag at all but am glade all most got unit off frame but I was wondering to ok I got a Wesco clutch basket and screws could It be bind up cause the clutch basket gear i pressed out mabey in stall rong or washer I missed
Shame some guys own bikes and expect they never need any maintenance or oil changes ever. Would be better off with a 2T
Agree
wow, that oil looks terrible
Its still running lol
Hahahahaha
Terrible mechanic to tear the engine apart before even checking the plug haha
The customer asked us to check the valves. That’s why he brought it in.
All that work only to realize the spark plugs loose. Engine mechanics 101, check for spark, fuel, compression :) I would be pissed if he did that to my bike.
The customer wanted a valve adjustment anyway.
Call me silly but I could have sworn I seen him checking for spark like I'm sure everyone else does with the plug out up against a ground 🙄
Hold the camera still, you make me sick.
We have better cameras now. And thanks for spending energy saying negative things about a free video.
Misleading title. No adjustment, just checking valves. Wasted my time
