Just finishing up my 2008 yz450. Motor was a few rides away from grenading. It's been a bit of a battle. On top of a full rebuild it was neglected in almost every other way. Almost every bearing, seal, cable needed to he replaced as well as bunch of other little things. But there is nothing better than bringing a bike back from the dead.
I brought the exact same bike a few weeks ago with the intention of rebuilding it but it turns out it had a major rod failure completely snapped the balance shaft in half and destroyed the casing. these model engines have a large oil cavity around the crank and if something comes loose inside normally it gets smashed to bits. its been an expensive build so far but ive learnt so much from it
Great job you have an awesome bike ..built by you! Be sure after break-in at 1st oil change to get a quality full synthetic motorcycle oil in it. 10w40. Maxima Pro Plus or Mobil1 4T racing are hugely popular! #Maxima
A "back yard mechanic" you may be Benjammin - but your skills and attitude would put many professional mechanics to shame! A fantastic build and transformation - thank you as always for sharing!
It’s not a 450 but I got a 1998 yz400f a few weeks ago and I have to say I think I won the lottery on this one. It’s the absolute best maintained and most well taken care of used bike I have ever layed my hands on
I noticed you hitting the bearing in with a mallet. I learned from others to use old bearings to tap in. Perfect size without the risk of damaging new bearings.
Good job. Only suggestion is if you are going to drive the new case bearings in by hammer, then atleast use a bearing/seal driver to do so. Preferably one that is brass or aluminum. Do nice centered flat blows. And oil them ever so sligtly around the race edge and case mating surface. Also if installing some other way than i described you should do the best you can to focus the driving downward of the bearing by tapping around only the other race. Our evenly across the whole surface. If u drive it in by the inner race you can chance completely destroying or badly damaging the integrity of the bearing and may not even see it realize it until its to late..
Thanks for the advice, I’ve learned a lot over the past few years and since then I’ve bought lot more tools for the job. This was my first rebuild and I made a lot of mistakes.
Little late to the party, I have an 08 250f and bought it with those exact same graphics on it. After some time they started to peel. I’ve been looking for them for months across different websites. Did you get them off of eBay?
Maybe look up the correct way and order to tear down and rebuild. You apparently have the tech manual. Top end should be the last thing to come off. And use a bearing press for removal and install- never a hammer.
Have you rebuilt a dirtbike motor like this? You HAVE to remove head first and install last and you’re right I should’ve used a press but I didn’t have one.
I wonder why there are so many different bearing installation tools out there? When you can obviously just use a hammer or mallet, I mean, everyone has a dirty old persuader lying around somewhere.
The quick answer is Japanese (Honda, Yamaha,Suzuki) they make great bikes, But ktm is nice too. Biggest thing is just doing maintenance on it regularly to make sure it runs good for a long time.
Nice job. Where did you get your headlight from? Was it plug and play, or did you have to splice wires to get it connected? Im looking for a headlight for my yz450fx and that looks like a great solution. Thanks!
Thanks! The led bar is from eBay and had to get an external battery pack and wire everything thing. This specific yz450f apparently couldn’t fit a stator with a auxiliary power for light on it so had to go with external source, which I bought a “dewalt battery power dock” on eBay for like $16
czerwiec04 I got you, I was just going for as much red as I could I wanted to do all the engine plugs red as well but the kit was like $300 for a couple anodized red pieces 😂
@@Benjamminoutdoors lol.... Anyone can do what you do... Buy the parts and put them together... A true restorationist uses what is on the bike and repairs and restores them...... Call it what it really is a factory rebuild....

I have mixed emotions... I appreciate they rebuild video, but maybe I’m missing something. Did you check the shims after you tried kicking several times and turning the engine over with an impact gun or was the video editing wrong? And the carb should definitely have been looked through before kicking the bike over, I mean you were starting with a bike that had debris inside the head... Thanks for your efforts, I know doing this is not easy, but a disclaimer to viewers may keep some from making a mistake if they are trying to learn. Good luck in the future!
Nícolas Piano I’m well aware of what can happen. And while it looked like I started it up and immediately ripped the throttle, me driving it was not the same day as me cranking up the first time.
From the factory they do not come with the gasket between the main cases, so I do not put one between the cases because that can ever so slightly put my connecting rod off center and can potentially not let my cylinder jug fit on properly. if you don’t believe me you can go to the Yamaha parts and look at the images, all the covers have gaskets but the main cases do not.
Why not? It doesnt cost anything and doesn’t hurt anything. I’ve seen fresh rebuild forks leak after ridding some so I’m not ganna spend the extra effect if this works just as well.
Britmaster 1 Every time I’ve done it it worked well, and if it doesn’t work then I’ll do the forks seals but it doesn’t take much time and doesn’t cost any money so why not try it first.
I'm not a bro.... And I've rebuilt motorcycles since I was 10..... I don't need Google to know a YZ motorcycle doesn't have a camshaft or standard valves they have Reed valves..

Good job. Just a little tip for Installing bearings is to freeze the bearing and heat the case and you will never have to beat them in with a hammer
I did freeze bearings and heat the case and still had to use the hammer.

Yamaha YZ 4-STROKES are excellent bikes & well worth the time & $ to fix w/finest parts!
You are a great mechanic!
😮😮that was pretty cool when you was testing the motor never knew you could do that
I’m doing the same thing to my yz450f guy before me blew the crank on it
A little bit late but damn what an awesome rebuild! Seems like the previous owner liked to beat the s**** out of that engine, incredible...
Big shout from Scotland awesome as always bud
Whatttt up, Thanks bro!
Oh wow! Such rebuild, much fix, very bike
i didnt think that light bar would look good, but SHEESH!
Yeah It looks really good coming through the number plate!
I have the yz250f 09 in the white and it’s an awesome bike
Spoke covers ain’t it and grips are cheap that’s my only quarrel other than that love watching you bring an old beast back to life
Really nice job like ever bro, it was insane, cheers and blesses
Thanks!
Not a big fan of spoke covers, and a restyle front fender would really set it off... Ask me how I know. lol. What was the total spent in fixing it up?
This one came out sick!!!
Built From The Bottom thanks bro! Definitely one of my most favorite builds!
Dude you just need a white seat cover and then you’re golden
Awesome job!!!!
Another awesome rebuild, heck yea bro
Jonathan Bizilia thanks bro!
My bike is next what time and location lol...good job bro nice video I enjoy watching this
installs sylinder and piston whitouth oil, thats good for sure..
Yeah that wasn’t good. I lubed everything in the bottom end but failed to lube the piston definitely a dumb mistake.
Awesome as always bud great job. Would love one of your bikes. Usual big shout from Scotland 👍
Nice work 🤘
Sick Rebuild!!
Awesome rebuild! You gotta get the TDC before kicking hard and wasting your energy
Just past and you can do it in slippers

Did you say T6, as in Rotella T6 oil?? when you were lubing the cam and timing chain?
I hope you didn’t forget your cylinder coolant dowel and oring. Looks like u didn’t put it in
I didn’t, don’t worry lol
hey man how much did you pay for a new set of cases?
Wait what? You just pull the seal down farther or something in the forks? If they are deteriorated tho, it will start leaking again
The biggest reason for forks to leak in my experience is been stuff between the seal and the fork tube itself, like dirt which causes the leak.
Where did you get these graphics they give the bike a clean alternative oem look
Thanks! eBay
Did you use 3000 paper when you got into your swingarm
How did you get the cam chain to go on so easy. With an oem chain and the tensioner removed its still tight
You kind of have to put one cam in at an angle, it’s a little tricky
Perfect🐐

I got a battery pack.
Hey I just bought a 450 and I was just wondering what years is the front fender and plate
This is a 06-09 body style, I’m not sure what other years it’ll fit.
Just amazing
Did ya lube the cylinder and check ring gaps?
Great vid btw.
I did not, those were some mistakes I made.
hi, can you just tell me what was the link or name of the light that you mounted on
Not sure but it was just some eBay 7” single row led bar.

Can u help me rebuild my Yz450f 09
Nice
Nice job, but you shouldnt be reving the bike so much till the engine is broke in
depends on who you talk too about break in technique, But it doesn’t help I’ve owned this for over a year and was dying to ride it finally.
@@Benjamminoutdoors reving too much can twist the rings and destroy it, may cause scoring on the cylinder wall too
