This is an excellent video! And what a clean bike! I ended up taking the hole tensioner out my locking mechanism was faulty even when I took it out from the cam chain housing. I’ll just use it that way it won’t affect the functionality of the part itself . Though now I’m working with the shims, my two intake valves were way off (.007) would not even go through the valve clearance easily but all my exhaust valves were in spec (.004 and .005) I’m just going to go up two sizes on intake valves (if I’m allowed to) and get those .004’s to .005 and call it a day. Does this sound familiar to you or am I just making all this stuff up? Haha first time taking my bike apart and having looked like 3 videos I think I’m in the right path what do you think?

As the valve wears, the clearances will get tighter, so from say 25 to 20. You don’t want to shim it with a smaller tolerance, example 25 to 20, that’s counter productive. If your valve clearance is middle spec, leave it. If it’s tight shim in to a looser tolerance allowing the valve to be in spec. The valves cannot possibly shorten, which would increase the tolerance, example 25 to 28. I’ve had a few people say that they found that, but I’m unaware of how that can be possible. I always tell them it’s due to a bad initial measurement as the valve can on recede in the head, therefore decreasing the shim tolerance. Hope this helps.
@@DanMX2112i am getting more and more nervous when riding my bike beacuse there is a ticking sound like the normal 4t ticking but it gets worse and worse but i still have the same good power and comp, i checked valve clearance and it was in spec so ill change timing chain and check the piston, im not sure what it could be if i do not find anything Any idea what creates the ticking sound?
Great video but where do the shims go? You pull the valve caps off with a magnet and they will be underneath? Then you place the shims ?? Sorry I'm confused as to where to place the shims. Thanks man. Oh n I'll take that diagram for the math.
@@DanMX2112 Ok so pull up the buckets with a magnet the shims will be underneath. Then do the math n pick the shim that gets you into spec. Appreciate it man!
@@DanMX2112 I got one other question about the math so I can see this in my head... The top left intake valve you measured . 17 and subtracted that from the . 25 where you wanna be. You get .08 then you subtract that from the actually measured shim size of 1.79 and = 1.71. Why do you subtract it? Wouldn't you need to add it to get a bigger shim?
@@TheChaz81 As your valves wear out, the spacing between the valve bucket, and the cam shrinks. The new shims must also shrink, or be smaller, to increase that gap after adjustment. Not sure what your measurements will be as the question is confusing, but understand that you will not install a larger shim, only smaller.
Hi so I have a yfz 450 very similar engine to yours and I was wondering if you heard a ticking noise as you accelerated because I feel like my timing chain is stretched and was wondering you heard the same noise
Hey, Awesome video man, super helpful but I do have a question. So I have a 2007 yz450f and I have to put in a new exhaust cam and timing chain. But I’m confused on one part of the video where you said make sure your pistons dead center. We’ll I have it dead center but the only thing is that my cams aren’t aligned exactly so im not sure if I should just try and align both of them or if I should just try and align the intake cam since im putting in a new exaust cam anyways also should I align them or the one before I can put in my timing chain?
Make sure piston is at top dead center. That can only be done with the flywheel cover on. Timing chain must be installed before hand, then time the cams by turning them till you show correct timing on all three timing marks, exhaust, intake, and flywheel. Don’t do anything until you have both cams. Hope this helps. Don’t forget, timing is only correct when tensioner is released also. Double and triple check everything! You got this! Download a manual online also to help.
Hey daniel .thanks for whats probably the most in depth video on this topic. ive a couple questions 1st is how did u get so clean honestly it looks brand new and i was reading the comments and found a couple a gentleman questioning your valve measurment technique. Im sure once i do mine it will become more clear to me also are you familar withe the life expectancy of the cam chain. I have a 05 450f i see the quad guys talking about a oiling issue do you know if this aplies to the f model i wont do my valve adjust without your sheet thats badass i have a power bomb and a factory 4.1 muff ive ridden it twice and had a terrible time starting it and it would constantly stall. I typically ride to 5k ft down to 3500ft.my pilot is a 45.the intermediate is a 72 and the main is a 165 i dont know if it's been jetted . as i dont have info on the stock jetting.fmf offers a jet kit they call it stage 1. But i couldn't locate specs. Im old and broken so this thing need to start easily for me (hopefully) can you shoot me a link to the feeler gauges. And also a copy of your valve adjust sheet Thanks for all your great help i will be watching more my email Wrenchesonall63@gmail.com
Thanks for the kind words my friend, i really appreciate it! I sent you the valve sheet so hopefully you received it. The 05 is a sweet bike, and i'm not sure about oiling issues. Now if i'm certain, it has oil in the frame right? Also, jetting is dependent on each bike and each circumstance, as if seen people with different jet setting on the same carb and bike and how similar results. Given your info i think your bike is stock, although it may have change from 05 to 06. The link to the feeler gauges is in the description of the video, so go pick some up. Thanks again Steve, your awesome!!!
dude. @ 4:00 is that the way you got it or did you straight up disassemble everything and super clean the engine and frame and every little single component and everything else?! t looks fresh off the factory line, into your room! If you are the one who made it look so fresh and so clean- please do a video on how to renew a dirtbike..
Yea I know Newby question but ... when putting back on the fly wheel after you got it all timed right, how do you tighten the nut that holds on the fly wheel ? I went ahead and put the case cover back on , can you just use a impact or do you need a wrench on it like you took it off ?
The flywheel cover needs to come off, and the flywheel has a flat on it for a wrench, then torque it using a torque wrench on the nut. Kinda tight but easily done.
@Daniel Tucker OK can do, well if I already have the timing set with the fly wheel on and the nut , since it has that little c shaped clip In it , will the timing still be on point when I take the cover back off and tighten it to the 47 ft pounds? Wondering if the "I" moves if it will mess up the timing with the cams?
@Daniel Tucker awesome 👌 just wanted to make sure I wouldn't have to take the top end back off , shouldn't of put the cover on sealed the gasket but got excited snd ahead of myself , new bike 😀 ready to ride yesterday lol 👍thanks

hey man im just about to pick up a 2007 yz450f it has problems stalling when it gets hot and then its a pain to get it going again once its hot do you have any ideas on what it could be? thanks. appreciate all the videos.
Man that’s exciting for sure! Sounds like a jetting issue, but I would immediately tear down, clean carb, and adjust the valves. Process of elimination with any ongoing issue!
I use an aluminum cleaner with a brush when the buildup gets rough. Something similar to an aluminum wheel cleaner or alumibrite. The key to keeping it clean is not letting dirt stay on the motor very long, get it before it gets the motor! Thanks Alex!
got bike running but only runs with choke on i put a lexi silencer on it! timing chain tensioner leaking oil! seems to be overheating too. didn’t ride it just ran it in my little building for a while. coolant coming outta overflow. you have any answers for these problems? like fixing oil leak is that a hard task
I know sorry, it’s been brought up in the comments below also. Basically just install it opposite of how I took it off. Leave it tight and install, then release the tension afterward and your golden. Thanks for watching hope this helps.
So I just finished doing valves and put everything back together and I unfortunately found a very small o ring probably around 1/2 an inch anyone know where this might go?
Stator cover, there is an oil pass on the upper left side of the motor behind the stator cover. Only o ring that should be involved. Don’t run the bike, without installing it. Let me know that is it.
@@DanMX2112 I just looked at the manual and saw that, just finished installing it, thanks for the reassurance though because I still wasn't 100 percent for sure if that was it. Also thanks for the quick response. This was the best video I found for valves, made the job super easy!!!!!
@@DanMX2112 so I’m doing my shims and I take both cams out and I tie them up to my handlebars so they won’t drop and I’m done with everything and I go to put the cams back on and the chain has no slack to put the cams back on

What's the most people would pay for a bike as clean as this but doesn't one when you get it and he says something like it needs vavle clearence or something haha just paid 2k for a kawasaki 450f 2007 cleanest bike I've seen but it stop starting well bump starting couple weeks haha so how much is the most you'd pay someone for a bike as clean as this but doesn't run but could be a simple thing like the cam chain or valve clearence have it in the shop and we'll the guy said it was valves and the machine says valves looked pretty good but it's the cam chain that needs replacing and so I was up to 250 now I'm at another 220 and 75 for the breaks 😬 but then the bike should be running and riding but I'm assuming the bikes only gonna have anoyher decent 10/15 hours before a full rebuild?
Not running changes the scenario. Finding a bike this clean that doesn’t run is hard. I wouldn’t pay over 1500 for a bike that don’t run, as long as everything else is mint! Then, if your $1000 into and entire engine, your at the cost of the bike running. That’s me.
Yeah kinda regreting it haha but yeah me own dad sold me yz250f 2001 for 1000 but this 450 is clean and very well maintained but yeah when I brought the bike the guy was like yeah you can bump start it will run and so on but when I got there it started raining and plus I'm very light these days and didn't have a enough power to really even try but i have it in the shop apparently the shims and valves weren't to bad he replaced them but it was the cam chain they said so already paid 250 now up to another 220 for the cam chain hopefully bike shouldn't have any problems after that but even anerkennung at a good laugh to his coworker haha he brought a non runner so yeah kinda regret it but if it goes with no problems then I got a super clean running bike for basically 2470 haha what does anyone else have the same problem with when they go and buy a bike and have been looking for ages and can't find anything and then boom something to good to be true comes along and then when ya buy that bike you see a bunch of bikes listed for around the same price in better conditions and newer models ect. Bloody hate that already think the 450 be to big for me 😅 might swap it for a 250 or a 125 two stroke anyways again great vidoe love seeing ya young fella out and about as well that's cool 😎 never had this type off stuff growing up so it always good to see 💪😎.
@@DanMX2112 yeah well you being in America you probably use Craigslist? Or even gumtree?? But I really only use fb market place and use have that noe to but do you use?you come across alot off good stuff and people wanting to trade you'll be browsing at shit all night it's addictive haha I can't believe even today you've kept this bike in such food condition well done.
Shouldn't you be added for example in the left exhaust the maths is 1.79 + 0.8 instead of 1.79 - 0.8? In order to make this valve shim and gap bigger because you had 0.8 loss Plz explain!
Βασιλης Μουτος The purpose of the shim is to increase or decrease the height of the cam bucket, so you can adjust the space between the cam and the bucket. In the left exhaust valve he got a measurement of 0.17 clearance and the tolerances are from 0.20 to 0.25 gap, so we need more space. This means the existing shim (1.79) is too fat so he needs a thinner shim to decrease the bucket height, thus increasing the gap between the cam and the bucket. In this case a 1.71 shim. So 1.79-1.71=0.08 difference 0.08 +0.17= 0.25 space, which means we’re in tolerance.
Because then the valves can wear in and not be out of tolerance. Example: Spec Exhaust: .20 - .25 If I shim to .20, once my valve wears I’ll be .19 - .18, which is out of spec. If I shim to .25, valve will wear and be .24 - .23, still in spec. That help?
Jet Thomas I totally skipped that lol install it with the two 8mm bolts then, do just the opposite, turn it counter clockwise with your screw driver and it will snap tight. Pretty much exact opposite as uninstalling it. Don’t loosen it before you install it, bad bad!
@@DanMX2112 dont loosen it? This is the confusion, if it's the exact opposite then you would stick it in lose, bolt it in then tighten the chain right? Very confused, do I put it back in lose so chain is lose, or do I put it in tight so the chain is tight? Then install the 2 bolts
Samuel Romans install it loose and tighten bolts to torque, then let the tension off and it will tighten the chain, of that make sense. You don’t want to install it sprung, risking cross threading bolts and also, it will be spring to full travel if done before installed. So, install and let tension out on chain. Hope this helps
You are correct my friend, just noticed that in the video. I’ll edit that out as to not sway anyone wrong. Great catch! Only took 21k views before someone said anything lol thanks for watching!!!
The tensioner removed, and the cam caps off. It should be timed before you put the cam caps back on. With the cams tilted slightly toward you, lift the chain and move it one tooth at a time while rotating the cam. It’s not bad once you get the cam in the correct position.
@@DanMX2112 well I keep having problems with my crank moving when I’m messing with the timing chain and trying to set the cams. the bike was starting first 3 kicks when I bought it a couple months ago just leaking oil out of the exhaust and blowing smoke, was told it needed rings bc the oil ring was bad or busted idk, anyway put a new set of rings not me my buddy haha and put it back together thought everything would have been good kicked it over it started for .5 seconds then died, bc after that I had to open the throttle completely for it to kick over with compression, if the throttle wasn’t completely open you could sit there and kick and have no compression or fire. Well me being the uneducated man I am had it running one day revved it out for maybe 4 seconds powwwww black cloud of smoke and it died wasn’t even starting when I opened the throttle so I tore it down and it’s jumped time none of the marks was lining up so now I got my cams out and my chain tied up on my frame and honestly idek what to do about it haha

I always tell them it’s due to a bad initial measurement as the valve can on recede in the head, therefore decreasing the shim tolerance. Hope this helps.

@@DanMX2112i am getting more and more nervous when riding my bike beacuse there is a ticking sound like the normal 4t ticking
but it gets worse and worse but i still have the same good power and comp,
i checked valve clearance and it was in spec so ill change timing chain and check the piston, im not sure what it could be if i do not find anything
Any idea what creates the ticking sound?
Timing chain tensioner is a common for ticking. How many hours on the bike?
Great video but where do the shims go? You pull the valve caps off with a magnet and they will be underneath? Then you place the shims ?? Sorry I'm confused as to where to place the shims. Thanks man. Oh n I'll take that diagram for the math.
They go under the buckets. If you look close you can see the indent for the shims.
@@DanMX2112 Ok so pull up the buckets with a magnet the shims will be underneath. Then do the math n pick the shim that gets you into spec. Appreciate it man!
You got it, good luck my guy. Thanks for watching also, I appreciate it!
No sir, and I would dare say you’re right on that issue. I would swap it out and make sure the tensioner is good to go!
@@DanMX2112 thankyou so much!!!!This helps tons Ill let you know if I have anymore confusion thanks a lot!!
Do I have to take radiator out to adjust the valves? Thankyou!

STIZEN9 dude it seriously is that clean, no work from me. Just washed with simple green concentrated!
@@a.camden4631 the “c” clip is a woodruff key, and it will keep it aligned. No problems there!

So I just finished doing valves and put everything back together and I unfortunately found a very small o ring probably around 1/2 an inch anyone know where this might go?

Thanks man, little man loves it! And you could probably trade for a 250cc, being that you have the bigger bike, who knows?

I’ve done everything here and my bike still won’t start! Buggggeeerrrr!! So over 4 strokes
Sounds like another issue, go back and check for spark, and fuel.
Shouldn't you be added for example in the left exhaust the maths is 1.79 + 0.8 instead of 1.79 - 0.8? In order to make this valve shim and gap bigger because you had 0.8 loss
Plz explain!
@@josuedavid3786 Hi mate, tell me standard clearance of YZ 250 & KX 250 pliz 🙏
@@khadee2789 I suggest you download the service manual from google, or just type model and year on google and ask in a forum.
@@josuedavid3786 thanks mate
@@khadee2789 btw the YZ 250 and the KX 250 are 2 strokes, no valves. So you don't need the clearances.
I'm so confused why are you going off the high end of the specs ??
Because then the valves can wear in and not be out of tolerance. Example:
Spec Exhaust: .20 - .25
If I shim to .20, once my valve wears I’ll be .19 - .18, which is out of spec.
If I shim to .25, valve will wear and be .24 - .23, still in spec.
That help?
You're a goddamn genius Gump 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 thanks !!!
Lt. Dan, I got you some ice cream!
You havnt addressed some key issues for timing... among other things.
the only reason I watched this videos was to see how you tighten the cam chain tensioner properly when reinstalled and you didn't even show it
Jet Thomas I totally skipped that lol install it with the two 8mm bolts then, do just the opposite, turn it counter clockwise with your screw driver and it will snap tight.

Just chopped it out! Your a lifesaver!!!
Is it illegal to show us how you got that chain back on the cams god dangit I’m struggling here
The tensioner removed, and the cam caps off.
