Hi, I'm in the first phase as an artist, experimenting and educating myself, living in a small town in India. And I'm 60 years old, dreaming of being an artist now, thinking it's never too late. Thank you for this wonderful, insightful video that gives me hope and encouragement to continue on this journey.
Dear .... I always watch your videos. It has been useful for me as a self-taught artist. I am now 60 years old. I have been working since 1983. I used to write poems since childhood. I entered the field of painting completely by chance. I was working as a photographer in Sharjah. Dali's paintings I saw when I went to a friend's house on a day off changed me a lot. But since I was a child I used to find shapes on mossy walls. It was just that. My painting experience. I don't write poems anymore. Words became full strokes. So far, the creativity has been sustained even in the face of financial hardship. My ambition is to paint till my last breath while listening to music. I was juggling many jobs to advance my painting career. Many people ask, do not all the paintings sell? I will lie that I am. Now my children say firmly. Keep drawing as you wish. So I am satisfied.
I think Warhol said that he felt a responsibility to everyone that bought his art, because now his job is to keep consistently producing art and to appear on interviews and have this image to make his art be more valuable, because the image of the artist - his story, history and personality is a major point of success in the art world. So that said, I think that today, artists, by using social media, need to create their own world, where its 50/50 - 50% about their art, and 50% about themselves and the process. Btw documenting the process will eliminate doubt if the artist has used AI, which would make the work have this aura of authenticity and originality
Absolutely. Artists with charisma and personality are also much more likely to become successful. Social media is indeed a must today-it's a proof of life and a glimpse into the artist's personality. When it comes to documenting the process, I am not sure if we need to take pictures of every piece at every step-but the proof of actual studio activity is for the artist's archive for sure. Thank you for tuning in and for this excellent contribution to the topic. Have a great day!
Very thought provoking opinion... so, an artist is selling themselves as much as their art. Well, that's me done... My life has been too unbelievable for anyone to believe that I didn't make it all up!!
So beautifully said…as a self taught artist and losing confidence … you have given me new hope and clear instructions to never give up and I thank you 😊x
Absolutely brilliant and clear summary of how to become a professional artist. It is really difficult and personally rewarding occupation all things considered, but one must persist, the goal is worth it. Thank you for the huge amount of work you have put into distilling all this information into a logical pathway of development.
I think your video is very encouraging to the self- taught artists. Even though the beginning might be so humble, nobody knows their future how big it is. I'll go on my way for it. Thank you.
WOW! Just WOW!!!! Ive been working on my art for many years and this is easily the best advice ive ever had. I've watched a few of these/your videos and i can honestly say this is the rabbit hole ive been looking for! Thank you so much for shairing this knowledge. it is trule priceless to many, many artists/people.
It's a great hobby. Belonging to a community of like minded artists is a great benefit. Finding such a community can be elusive. Thank you for your informative videos.
Don't just study art and the art world, learn about people, sociology, nature, psychology, pain, love, LIVE A LOT it doesnt matter how much you know about art and how many fancy words you can throw in a conversation, you need to know about the world, follow your interests, "FIND SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND LET IT KILL YOU". (bukowski) and then tell the world about that experience through art (: Share your trascendental subjective experiences.
Absolutely fantastic, clearly explained, most informative and relevant video for self taught artists. I am so very grateful for this. Thank you very much.
Thank you for this info. I'm 54... Just painted on my first canvas March 2023... After a life of constantly being discouraged by teachers, never really having support from 'friends' and told I was going to Hell by my family for wanting to be in the arts, I feel like it's now or never... I don't know if I can ascend the lofty heights of being in galleries, but once I feel more confident, I would just want others to like what they feel when they look at my pieces... Still exploring with student canvases and cost efficient paints atm... But learning so much organically. All of this information is very encouraging... 🙏
Go for it!! As Vincent Van Gogh said: "If you hear a voice within you (or from others) say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." Because you paint, you are a painter!!
Beautiful! Every sunday CAi programs fixed me to meet apointments for my future self-developement, and I like to wait for it every time. CAI loves you! hahaha
The pleasure is all mine; there is tremendous lack of industry-approved information on the World Wide Web-in fact, there is a lot of harmful information out there. So it has become our mission to share this "inside-information" and prove industry-approved career advice for all artists, free of charge. So feel free to stay tuned!
Hi Chris, thank you! Yes, absolutely. This roadmap can indeed be used for trained artists, in which steps 1 to 4 would already start at art school. Thank you for tuning in and for the kind comment!
As a working class man, I am self taught, because my parents would never have been able to send me to art school, even now as a working man I couldn’t afford to go to art school. Also, only 8% of artists in the uk are from working class backgrounds, so it isn’t just being self taught that is the problem, it is a host of problems.
Just having time to create art is a problem. I always wonder how some of those New York genuises managed. Where did the funds come from? A lot of post-modern stuff is not that interesting, yet it gets into galleries. On the other hand, how much of it actually sells? The market is not that broad.
Thank you for sharing your success story. Congratulations.🎉 Cheers to us all self-taught artists who are passionately working towards making your mark in the world. Here are the following steps for success: 1. Experiment 2. Educate 3. Experience 4. Art Portfolio 5. Artist Profile 6. Make a Career
That's brilliant. 95% of the advice in this video is indeed helpful for any artist, trained or self-taught. Thank you for taking the time to leave a kind comment. Appreciate it!
A huge thank you for this video. You have answered several questions that I have had for many years. I look forward to more good information as I experience your offerings.
Thank you for this webinar. As an artist, 68 years, I am just beginning to seriously build a body of work to present to galleries and sell online. I studied graphic design at The Art Institute of Seattle 20+ years ago. Yet, never formal fine art school. I’m confident that in this day and age of online learning it is not a necessity. I study with the artists that inspire me.
Thank you for sharing so much knowledge on You Tube. Having set aside taking art A level and potentially going to art school for the sensible option of science A levels and a career in bookkeeping, I am now rediscovering my love of art and committing to teaching myself and developing my art as far as I can.
Hi there, thank you so much for tuning in. I will be writing an article (and video) on oeuvre development and style in the foreseeable future as well, so feel free to stay tuned :) Have a great day!
For me I am just trying and practicing having fun with it. But just seeing your video gave me more info for near future. Which I have been taking notes. In finding my style. Merci
I believe all artist are asking for help. In making art asking for help is part of the creative process. The help offered by CAI in my opinion is the most concrete and beneficial. Artist can not establish themselves with out the support of the art community. At all levels there is collaboration. The challenge is finding help in putting the puzzle together.
That is wonderfully put to words. We all need some guidance or direction at some point. Reaching out to more experienced or successful artists can often be life-changing for the young emerging artist. So I can only encourage sharing knowledge, experience, and information in the art community and try do contribute as best as I can myself. Thank you Daniel, have a great day!
All artists are self taught even those who attend formal classes. I had only one proffessor who demonstrated how to paint portraits in pastel. The rest art proffessors I never saw their wotk and they gave assignments to students *without teaching anything*. I learned from other students and my own research and experimentation. So, classroom experience has it's benefits.
Thank you so much for all your amazing work. I am so happy that i discovered this channel. I have a BA in Design and after 20 years I am now taking my passion for abstract painting serious and going for it. There are also great free online courses especially the ones by The Museum of Modern Art ,MoMA . I just signed up for In the Studio: Postwar Abstract Painting. Do you think it is a good move to get the certificate and list it in ones resume?
Thanks this is super helpful. I’m still not sure I want to go all the way with it. In any field, there are always many traps that, if even conspicuous as such, seem innocuous. They can follow you around like a dark cloud, but it’s hard to avoid them. Success is more about what someone doesn’t do than what someone does. The art world is no exception.
*If you want to be a high end fine art gallery artist and probably rarely sell any of your work. I agree with the education side of things, but never throw out your old work and only keep your best. That old work is a big part of your story and development. Don’t be pretentious. Learn as much as you can, experiment as much as you can, and find ways to get your work in front of regular people who love art and who might be able to buy it. Giant expensive canvas= very few potential buyers. Smaller limited edition high-end prints - more likely to generate immediate sales and a loyal following. Good art is everywhere, and most of it is not in galleries.
Hi there, thank you for tuning in. If you are in a high end gallery you will sell with (almost) every show. Throwing away old works is not about being pretentious in my opinion, it is about maintaining high standards. "Kill your darlings." I agree on learning and experimenting as much as you can. However, regular people visit galleries as well. And yes, there is good art in galleries. When it comes to the limited edition prints. It is a lot easier to sell one painting priced at €2.000 than 20 prints at €100. The art market is so overly saturated, adding more volume won't do the trick. More quality is the way to go, and selling originals is of course a first step. I'll believe we will expand on these topics in the foreseeable future so feel free to stay tuned.
To b honest, I am not an art guy at all. However. I watched and listend to your video and I have strange feeling that you launched a sensation of curiosity in me. To my surprise I started to watch other videos about art. It is imprrssiv how some artist succeed to influence/touch people. By the way, do you also have videis on sculpture? Many thanks for the great video 👍🏿
Thank you for your video and advices! I would like to ask you one question: why does art world not approve blogs? Maybe are there ways of doing blog and not harm own art career ?
Great question. Blogging is seen as low-culture and does not achieve the level of an art platform in terms of design, authors, and even the academic quality of text-especially when you blog about your own studio practice, which makes it seem as if you are "trying too hard" or trying to impose yourself. In the end, it is all about the format. If you would like to create an art blog, you would have to keep things very separate from your own practice. If you want to create content about your own practice, Instagram and possibly TH-cam (if you do not go too "vloggy") are better options. Hope this might help!
Thank you, I found this very helpful. I’m a self taught artist. I’ve been painting studying and working very hard for many years. I am an abstract artist now after studying all forms of art. I am looking for a Mentor, someone I can work with and learn frim. Do you have any ideas? Thank you
Thank you for very informative video. I have one question about galleries displaying art: what exactly is the thing with art hanged on cords on gallery wall? Why is that unprofessional? Thank you for your answer in advance.
I am my own type of artist with my own brand and style, but my biggest issue is that I live in a small town in norway with little opportunity to meet with professional artists and galleries. How can I get attention if I am stuck somewhere with no money and no opportunities to mingle with the art scene?
If you have access to decent camera equipment, etc you should try the internet. I've seen several self taught artists have a successful TH-cam channel. Also there are other formats online that you can sell your art through their online stores.
Hi fiddlewheelx, thank you for tuning in and for the excellent question. I believe this problem is a very common one and we plan to make a video in the foreseeable future to discuss this issue in depth. For now, I would advise you to focus on international art opportunities via Artenda.net. Further, really focus on your Instagram because Instagram knows no geographical limitations. But the in the end, when the time comes when you are invited or selected/approved for an exhibition/residency/contest, you will have to make the trip to make things happen.
@@dericksingleton4034 Hi Derick, yes it is possible to be successful with a TH-cam channel. But the question here is do I want to become a successful TH-cam (about art) or a successful artist. I believe these are two different things. It is possible to combine both of course but as we mentioned in this video, vlogging as an artist is still a bit frowned upon in the high end art world, as is selling on online market places. It is great way to generate some sales in the short term, but you will reach your peak (career/income-wise) a lot sooner. But this is also a great topic for another video.
Any notes/recommendations on using an alternative name or "pen name" for artist resumes that want to separate work from themselves personally for stylistic or privacy reasons?
Hi there; thank you for tuning in. Good question; a general rule of thumb is to avoid using multiple names at all times. Further, you need to have a very good reason not to use your personal name, and if you do, you must do it very consistently for perpetuity. Therefore, we advise to use your own name in the first place. If you struggle with stylistic issues, make sure to watch our video on developing a consistent art style next. For privacy reasons, you can consider using an alias, but you will have to use it forever. Hope this might help!
Important thing after two years of doing something ask yourself if it's your real point to go, are you talented and could be wanted by customers enough? The only thing I could be thankful for the war is that i realized that I went wrong. Of course the first thing was as omg, i lost everything but at the end I found another goals to do. Lucky me I was good in maths always, let art be as a hobby and side passion, life is short
I believe art should always start as a hobby/passion on the side. We always advise to search for a work-life-art balance, until the art eventually is able to replace the 'work' bit.
Hi there. Thank you for tuning in. It is possible-depending on your talent and commitment-to arrive at step 6 in just two years; meaning we have a young but decent portfolio and are prepared and professionalized to participate in the art world and being taken seriously. At this point, we are not established yet, but we can start to get traction in the form of success with open calls and exhibition invitations. Ambitious, but possible! Have a great day
@@contemporaryartissue Wow I'm blown away. I started my art journey 2020 and thought I was developing at an ok pace. Now I see I'm not. There is no way the work I'm producing currently is ready for the art world.: ( Time to stop slacking. Thank you for responding to me.
Same for me started 2020 so three years of it now but just starting to take it seriously now and weirdly feel panicked for time even though I’m only in my 30s😅😅😅

Brilliant overview. Priceless to me. Thank you for doing this. Best Guide I have seen that is tailored skillfully for the artist's success. Wow!
Thank you for sharing so much knowledge on You Tube. Having set aside taking art A level and potentially going to art school for the sensible option of science A levels and a career in bookkeeping, I am now rediscovering my love of art and committing to teaching myself and developing my art as far as I can.

@@contemporaryartissue oh great look forward to it.
Thank you sir for this video, I want to be more educates...
The pleasure is all mine!
these are important lessons and insider information that you share in your videos. thank you so much.
Thank you for the truth... in this social media world. I really appreciate the niche and hopefully I will be found.
Very helpful and well made. Thank you!

Thank you so much. This channel is such a gift.
Thank you for such good insights and feeling motivated and inspired. We need more democracy and less gate keeping in art field.
I couldn't agree more! 🙌
You Siralso present ALL OF THIS INFORMATION SO CLEARLY AND SUCCINCTLY THANK YOU AGAIN!!
Great advice, Thank-you. Intimidating and exciting, but so helpful.
Brilliant information I really really appreciate all of this amazing information….THANK YOU!!!

Excellent advice
Thank you!
I've been 'getting out' there,, updating and maturing my artwork since I was little, been an artist
That's wonderful, thank you tuning in!
Fantastic talk.
Thank you 🙏
Thanks this is super helpful.
Very good overview. Excellently presented.👍😀

Thanks for your very useful webinar
thank you

Geweldig nuttige video! Bedankt!
Heel graag gedaan!
Many thanks for the great video 👍🏿
thank u, very helpful
The pleasure is all mine, thank you for tuning in!
And thank you for this video it has been a tremendous help x
I’m a self
taught artist. I’ve been painting studying and working very hard for many years. I am an abstract artist now after studying all forms of art. I am looking for a Mentor, someone I can work with and learn frim. Do you have any ideas? Thank you
Thankyou.
The pleasure is all mine, thank you for tuning in!
Such an informative video thank you!
Hope this might help!
this is very useful as I ama self taught artist
That's great! Thank you for tuning in and wishing you all the best!
@@contemporaryartissue ❤✌👍
There you have it: Social media DO EXIST! They are alive and kicking in this channel! 💐💐💐
Absolutely 🙌Thank you for tuning in!
I’m so glad I’m an amateur producing for fun not income.
Hardly any art schools show you how to make or sell art 🤷🏾♂️ you learn your craft yourself with the help of others building on what came before.
We always advise to search for a work-life-art balance, until the art eventually is able to replace the 'work' bit.
thanks for sharing
The pleasure is all mine!
Thank you. This was very useful but did you really mean 2 years from beginner?
