  • We're less than a week removed from the 2024 NFL Draft, and yes, it's way too early to know who might make the cut for the final 53-man roster in September. That still won’t stop us from trying in the latest edition of the Audacy original Inside Black & Gold podcast. Saints sideline reporter Jeff Nowak and WWL sports director Steve Geller break down each position on offense and defense and how things might shake out. We also dive in on a trio of veteran players signed, and why we might want to pump the brakes a bit on the Spencer Rattler hype train.
    0:00 - Segment 1: Spencer Rattler an Exciting Pick for Saints, but Let’s Pump the Brakes
    ... The New Orleans Saints added a trio of veteran players this week after a 7-man draft class. Jeff Nowak and Steve Geller break that down to kick off today’s episode, then we hear from Spencer Rattler and dive into why it’s probably a good idea to pump the brakes on the hype train, because you’re not doing him any favors.
    21:40 - Segment 2: Saints 2024 Roster Projection: Offense … How Many QBs to Keep?
    ... The New Orleans Saints have some interesting questions to answer on the offensive side of the ball, and we go through a lot of them in the first half of this roster projection. How many QBs should you keep? Will Jamaal Williams make the cut? How does OL shake out with Ryan Ramczyk’s injury? We get into all that and more.
    45:01 - Segment 3: Saints 2024 Roster Projection: Defense … Gotta Stay Healthy
    ... One thing is clear about this New Orleans Saints defense: If it can stay healthy there’s a boatload of talent. Unfortunately that’s a very big if, particularly when it comes to the defensive line. We dive into that, how the kickoff could impact the makeup of special teams, the possible vision for a talented, 4-man CB room and a lot more.

    There’s one MAJOR problem with your 53 man Roster projection, it’s unrealistic.
    You can’t say it’s “easy” & you “didn’t have to cut anyone you didn’t want to”, when you are conveniently ignoring numbers needed for depth at certain positions.
    Look back through Kyle Shanahan’s or his protégé’s initial 53 man Rosters.
    You MUST have 1 dedicated FB.
    You MUST have 4-5 RB’s.
    You MUST have at least 3 REAL TE’s. Taysom Hill will be extra, because Kyle assigns ridiculous pass protection assignments to his TE’s, like blocking the Best Edge player on specific plays, Kubiak probably does also.
    You need 8-9 players for RB/FB/TE, plus Taysom Hill.
    You currently have 6 players including Taysom Hill.
    Fill those positions to the numbers Kubiak is going to require and see who you will have to cut, & if there’s still no difficult choices?
    Look at the Niners initial 53 from last season, as deep as their roster was, Shanahan still carried 4 RB’s & a FB. 2 RB’s that no one’s never heard of, Kubiak will NEED more than Kamara & Miller on his roster, the run game is that important to them.
    Plus Horvath, because they have to have a dedicated FB, not Taysom Hill either.

      It's the initial roster projection. It's going to be what it's going to be. That said, I'm fairly positive there'll only be 4 to 5 names maximum that change by the end of this process, and all those were explained explained as caveats in the breakdown. Feel free to come back and check that. Stuff like a Marshon trade or a retirement would drive that number up, but this is going off the information we have *right now*, not guessing about what might happen.
      Also, the running back situation is a product of the 49ers overdrafting running backs every year, so you keep those guys on the roster. Saints aren't keeping four RBs on the 53.

    With the Shanahan - Kubiak System they usually keep 3 RB’s and 1 FB active on Game Day . We will keep Willams and with this scheme he’ll have a bounce back Season ! The key is getting the O Line to step up . Last Season we couldn’t Run the Ball on Offense ! Defensively we couldn’t stop the run or running QB’s ! This must change or it’s another disappointing Year !

    Rattler vs Carr - Wilson vs Flynn in Seattle ! It’s possible especially with this new Offensive Staff . This Staff picked Purdy over Lance even though they gave up numerous High Draft Picks for Lance ! Rattler has a great Arm ! I hope he can put it together for Us !

    • @WWLsports
      @WWLsports  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Well, let’s be clear … THIS staff didn’t do that and no staff actually did that. Purdy took over midway through the 2022 season. Trey Lance was the starter, meaning that was their pick. Lance got hurt and they went to Jimmy G. Jimmy G got hurt and they went to Purdy. Klint was in Denver at that point. He joined Kyle Shanahan’s staff in 2023, at which point they kept Purdy and traded Lance. Playing this as if that somehow all links back to him is a bit of a stretch. On top of that, even if you go by the Purdy example he was third string his rookie year.

    Jeff, we paid Dallin Holker quite a bit for a UDFA, which means DA and Klint are quite confident he'll make the squad and contribute this season. The guy has flaws in his game, but he's a pass-catching stud. Dunno how he went undrafted

    • @WWLsports
      @WWLsports  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Folks say the same thing every year, but there’s really no correlation between signing bonuses and actually making the roster. It’s moreso just an indicator that the guy has a good agent and/or there was some competition in getting the deal done. They gave Abram Smith $222K guaranteed. Didn’t even make the practice squad. Of course he’s got a chance to make the roster, but the contract really doesn’t mean that much.

    I have spent a lot of time watching Carr, Haener, and Rattler these last 5 years and Carr is a helluva lot better than Haener and Rattler, so neither of the backups are going to see the field for quite some time as long as Carr is healthy, and NEITHER of them are starter quality.

He went to a new franchise after nearly a decade with the same team, took the field with one of the absolute worst offensive coordinators in football (objectively, statistically proven not my opinion) and suffered through an AC sprain in his throwing shoulder which is the same injury that ended Anthony Richardson's season. He missed zero games despite being behind a bottom five offensive line that let him get crushed repeatedly. He took the number 20 scoring offense to the number 9 scoring offense despite all those problems. There's no argument that he isn't a great QB.

      @WWLsports  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It’s possible. I agree you probably need more than five, and I’d say Jamaal probably makes it. You might be able to sell me on a 4th TE, but remember … we’re talking about the active roster. This team likes to use practice squad elevations, and I think that extra guy will end up there.
      For Jackson, I wouldn’t say I’m counting anybody out right now. I think he’s most likely a practice squad guy, tho. This projection isn’t about taking any major leaps … it’s more just to set a baseline of where things stand prior to camp so I can make adjustments as we go. Veterans and draft picks are always going to get higher priority at this stage.

    I agree and I feel like the Saints were fortunate and got great value with the first three picks.
    Fuaga was a no-brainer selection. Pretty much the consensus best prospect available when they picked at a position of need. I think the Saints made the right call not trading up.
    McKinstry fell and I think he already joins an extremely talented defensive backfield. Good mix of young talent and experienced veterans, and I think it’s a good fit for the scheme and roster.
    I like the Rattler pick and what it could mean for the future, and I’m interested to see how Rattler develops behind Carr with Kubiak.
    The rest of the picks I think are solid and at good positions to compete for roster spots.
