- The spine is made flexible by discs located between each vertebra and ligaments made of tough elastic fibers which hold the vertebrae together. The spine gives the body stability and protects the spinal cord which is located in a narrow canal that runs through the center of each vertebra.
Together the brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The function of the spinal cord is to relay messages from the brain to the body and from the body back to the brain. All movements of the body and limbs and all sensation are relayed through the spinal cord and the spinal cord also plays a part in the transmission of messages from the autonomic nervous system which regulates many body functions such as heartbeat, blood pressure and temperature regualation.
Damage to the spinal cord can disturb any or all of these functions.
The 33 vertebrate that make up the spine are separated into 5 groups:
-Coccyx (Tailbone)
-Sacrum (S1-S5)
-Lumbar (L1-L5)
-Thoracic (T1-T12)
-Cervical (C1-C7)
Injuries to the spinal cord are divided into 2 groups:
1. Paraplegia
2. Quadriplegia

On July 26 I was in a very serious car wreck. I broke my neck and upper back. I had to get rods to get my spine back in place. I'm so lucky my spinal cord wasn't torn. I was so close to dying or being paralyzed from the neck down. I suffered some nerve damage in my arms but apart from that, my spinal cord is fine and I'm healing up well.

In 2014 I was a victim of gun violence. I literally got shot in the head, the ear to be exact, the bullet severed my spinal cord and left me paralyzed from the neck down. I have to breathe through a ventilator, I'm praying and crying everyday that God blesses me with the power to walk again

vertebral level injuries should not be confused with spinal cord level injuries- which is not mentioned in this video and can cause confusion in a lot more ways especially at lower level injuries

Most dangerous injury... Still I am in hospital after surgery. 7months I am feeling the pain . Still battling for life.. be positive guys..
SCIs can also be caused through a disc herniating. I have SCIs at C3/4, 6/7, C4/5 and C5/6 touching the cord, L1-S1 damage all caused through discs herniating and also injury through spinal arthritis. I had a C4 vertebra pushed out of alignment following a motorbike accident in 1987 which wasn't picked up until 2015!

@@brutallyhonestguy5985 constantly, but I'm on a decent range of meds which keep me going, working and paying the mortgage. They have side effects though which aren't great and I try to limit my use of my Dihydrocodeine, (Vicodin). Officially I'm a high functioning tetraplegic. I fall, have good days and bad, am tied all the time, but have a wonderful wife. Not everyone is as lucky. I'm now that annoying bastard who looks out for wheelchair access issues all the time though now lol. ;o) Keep smiling out there.
When I was one years old, I fell out of our truck, and was pinned under the right front tire. My mom backed out of our driveway with her head out watching not to go toward the ditch. when the truck stopped on its own, my mom put it in park and noticed i was not in the truck, she ran around to find me pinned under the right front tire. My aunt drove up at the exact time when my mom was backing the truck to release me. My mom was not in very good shape at this point. My Aunt helped carry me to her car, and drove me to the hospital. I was out to lunch as we call it, for a short time. I walked most my life, but now I am wheelchair bound. It was hard to change, but i learned to make it. I have a strong upper body. My lower legs are effected.

A chair is better than death. my neck was broken a few years ago. I hope the worst I get is a chair. Last few weeks have had my mind and emotions all over the place. I'm glad that you are okay. Always try to find something positive from a negative .

Incomplete spinal injury is much more common. Incomplete Injury may occur also possibly with a complete injury lower down the spine. Hence the description "incomplete and complete c5, c6 & c7".
The chances of recovery to spinal injury depends on many complex factors. Often occurring simultaneously after other injuries: medical, psychological, social and economic.
Very common are many types of brain Injury. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is caused by hard impacts, damaging many parts of the brain. TBI may also include the very deepest insides, the brain stem, which then creates varying degrees and types of impairment to the body's autonomic systems.
Drugs and lack of oxygen can create other injuries that affect many parts of the brain. This chemical damage depends on the chemical health of the brain, before, during and soon after the injury. Many quadriplegics and paraplegics then experience the same disorders as HEMIPLEGIC like myself.
Of the brain is damaged, it will not only affect muscular and sensation signals linked to the brain. Partial or complete brain Injury is much more serious than simple spinal injury. The brain affects the whole human body instead. Not just the party's of the body street the dinner cord damage.
Brain Injury damages the muscles, sensations (physical, sight, hearing, skin, temperature, etc), mood, emotions, autonomic life, and all types of deliberate thinking (decisions, memory, timing, priorities, and dementia).
At the time of my own car accident, aged as a 34 years old senior social worker (Sydney, Australia), my employment with the adult disability industries enabled a "miraculous" recovery, by 1984 standards. These miracle recoveries are now much higher, with today's technologies.

I have a problem with lumber and cervycle injuries but I can't find a specialist who knows what they refer to.
My spinal cord is injured since i was a child...and now im 29😇..still a miracle i have opportunity to live and not paralized..but the damage cause to have a lump at my back and chest part..maybe because my bone is dislocated.

Although I can manage to walk while holding to something and I can also climb the stairs, but hoping that one day I can walk on my own without the support of walls

my son has spinal cord injury t11 t12 ... his paralyses tell now since 2014 .. my son 13 yrs old now .. his spibal cord has inplant titanium ... sir maam what do you think its possible to walk again ? im still thinking about my son future sir maam can you help my son ? the inplant titanium if take it out again if the bones are all healed it possible? or if the titanium still inplant it possible my son recover and walking someday ? his attending therapy also....

jopz sh With the technology that we have NOW, it is very rare, not 100% impossible though. We can never know how medical technology will be 10 years from now but unfortunately we are not even close to finding a way to regenerate nerves. Walking or not, your son's future can be amazing if he wants. *this is all based in general knowledge that I have being in the second year of medical school. Any condition is deferent and no one but specialists can give you diagnosis for your son. Always see your doctors as friends that you can ask any question.

Depends lesions on your posterior section of the cord you have a decent chance at regaining a decent amount movement & sensation. Lesions on the anterior portion of your cord you will most likely not be getting much back.

My mom broke her neck, but her spinal cord was spared, so i really need to know is how long will the bone in the spine will heal?
You've probably found this info elsewhere by now but it'll take years for the bone to be as strong as prior to the injury but usually it takes about 9 mo - 1 year to heal. I am guessing she's already semi-mobile though now?

On 19/11/14 I was physically executed under instruction of then CEO witnessed by lawyers and team of Dr's my ordeal was recorded on video cameras. My neck shoulders and lower back was twisted in a heap by attending Dr.i untwisted from death infront of them. I'm left broken at c2,c3,c4, c5-c5, c6, c7, c8, t1-t11,l1,l2,l3,l4,l5,S1.. after my rights was taken away I got up and took the bus home.❤️🙏🇿🇦

jopz sh he can still recover full function over his legs after complete paralysis. If the spinal cord has been completely severed.. there is nothing medicine can do. I shattered T12.. I’m lucky to still walk
